Why doesn't Maureen Dowd write more often about Rudy Giuliani? She's writing
about
Al Gore, but he's not a candidate for president. (Yet.) A Nexis search of
"Maureen Dowd" and "Giuliani" in the New York Times yields few results. Here are
Dowd's references to Giuliani over the past five years:
May 20, 2006: "The Arizona senator did not depart from his text and
engage the students, as Bill Clinton might have done, with a passionate
exegesis of his stance. And, still trying to show that his temper is under
control, he did not push back, as Rudy Giuliani might have."
Dec. 17, 2005: "In 2004, the G.O.P. convention was staged like ''The
Magnificent Seven,'' with a gunslinging posse -- including Rudy
Giuliani, Arnold Schwarzenegger and John McCain -- riding in with W. and Vice to
save the town from the black hats. Poor John Kerry had to fall back on sailor
imagery, skippering a boat into Boston and saluting the crowd with ''I'm John
Kerry and I'm reporting for duty.'' At least he managed not to use the Village
People's ''In the Navy'' as his theme song."
Sept. 21, 2005: "[Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency head] Julie
Myers makes Brownie look like Giuliani. I'll sleep better
tonight, knowing that when she gets back from her honeymoon, Julie will be
patrolling the frontier."
Sept. 12, 2004: "Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney jumped in the polls because they
cast their convention as a Western. They were the ''Magnificent Seven,''
steely-eyed, gun-slinging samurai riding in to save the frightened town:
Rudolph Giuliani, John McCain, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Zell Miller, Dick
Cheney, George W. Bush and Poppy Bush, who was on ''Imus'' comparing Mr. Kerry
with Jane Fonda."
July 18, 2004: "...the Bushes always stick to their bad but deferential
vice-presidential choices. John McCain, Colin Powell or Rudy Giuliani
would be way too threatening for W."
March 11, 2004: "[Talking to Sen. John Kerry] I tell him that after
Rudy Giuliani joked at the Gridiron that the one thing he and Hillary had in
common was that they were both voting for George W. Bush, Hillary grinned and
playfully high-fived him."
Nov. 3, 2003: "There are those who say Mr. Bush should have emulated
Rudy Giuliani's empathetic leadership after 9/11, or Dad's in the first
gulf war, and attended some of the funerals of the 379 Americans killed in
Iraq."
Jan. 8, 2003: "Even centrist Democrats were leery of a Batman-less and, even
scarier, Giuliani-less Gotham. ... The TV cameras will catch only the
trompe l'oeil tableau of Republican regular folk: Rudy Giuliani and a
stage full of Rockettes and firemen"
Dec. 22, 2002: "This White House does not like to have any other stars
besides Mr. Bush, or independent spirits, or anyone who ever supported a rival.
That is why they never recruited Rudy Giuliani to run homeland security,
or Warren Rudman for the 9/11 commission, or John McCain for the cabinet."
Oct. 23, 2002: "As police commissioner of New York City in the mid-90's, Mr.
Bratton made the cover of Time for helping Mayor Rudy Giuliani tame the
untamable New York, from squeegee guys to wilding thugs. But Rudy, loath to
share top billing, forced his brassy chief out."
Oct. 16, 2002: "We know that Virginia's governor, Mark Warner, is bucking to
be the Rudy Giuliani of the crisis"
June 9, 2002: "Maybe if Mr. Bush brings Rudy Giuliani in as the new
cabinet officer, he can work magic."
Dec. 12, 2001: Post-attacks interview with Giuliani. Long interview.
