Thursday, Hour 1

Comment thread.

Good morning! Start your morning right -- by laughing at Glenn Beck.

Anthony Weiner wants the federal government to reimburse New York City for its war costs. Here's the deal: If city employees are called up for active duty but earn less from the military than from the city, the city "tops off" the military salary. Weiner thinks New York should be reimbursed.

Atrios of the blog Eschaton coming up at 9:45.

Paul Cruickshank, coming up at 10:45!

President Bush is not a baller.

Oh, that whole North Korea thing? Never mind. Bad intel.

Yes, Sam, "puerility" is a word.

Thursday, Hour 3

Ron Pollack of Families USA, comin up at 11:30. We'll talk to him about children and health care, in light of the death of Deamonte Driver.

Why doesn't Maureen Dowd write more often about Rudy Giuliani? She's writing about Al Gore, but he's not a candidate for president. (Yet.) A Nexis search of "Maureen Dowd" and "Giuliani" in the New York Times yields few results. Here are Dowd's references to Giuliani over the past five years:

May 20, 2006: "The Arizona senator did not depart from his text and engage the students, as Bill Clinton might have done, with a passionate exegesis of his stance. And, still trying to show that his temper is under control, he did not push back, as Rudy Giuliani might have."

Dec. 17, 2005: "In 2004, the G.O.P. convention was staged like ''The Magnificent Seven,'' with a gunslinging posse -- including Rudy Giuliani, Arnold Schwarzenegger and John McCain -- riding in with W. and Vice to save the town from the black hats. Poor John Kerry had to fall back on sailor imagery, skippering a boat into Boston and saluting the crowd with ''I'm John Kerry and I'm reporting for duty.'' At least he managed not to use the Village People's ''In the Navy'' as his theme song."

Sept. 21, 2005: "[Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency head] Julie Myers makes Brownie look like Giuliani. I'll sleep better tonight, knowing that when she gets back from her honeymoon, Julie will be patrolling the frontier."

Sept. 12, 2004: "Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney jumped in the polls because they cast their convention as a Western. They were the ''Magnificent Seven,'' steely-eyed, gun-slinging samurai riding in to save the frightened town: Rudolph Giuliani, John McCain, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Zell Miller, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush and Poppy Bush, who was on ''Imus'' comparing Mr. Kerry with Jane Fonda."

July 18, 2004: "...the Bushes always stick to their bad but deferential vice-presidential choices. John McCain, Colin Powell or Rudy Giuliani would be way too threatening for W."

March 11, 2004: "[Talking to Sen. John Kerry] I tell him that after Rudy Giuliani joked at the Gridiron that the one thing he and Hillary had in common was that they were both voting for George W. Bush, Hillary grinned and playfully high-fived him."

Nov. 3, 2003: "There are those who say Mr. Bush should have emulated Rudy Giuliani's empathetic leadership after 9/11, or Dad's in the first gulf war, and attended some of the funerals of the 379 Americans killed in Iraq."

Jan. 8, 2003: "Even centrist Democrats were leery of a Batman-less and, even scarier, Giuliani-less Gotham. ... The TV cameras will catch only the trompe l'oeil tableau of Republican regular folk: Rudy Giuliani and a stage full of Rockettes and firemen"

Dec. 22, 2002: "This White House does not like to have any other stars besides Mr. Bush, or independent spirits, or anyone who ever supported a rival. That is why they never recruited Rudy Giuliani to run homeland security, or Warren Rudman for the 9/11 commission, or John McCain for the cabinet."

Oct. 23, 2002: "As police commissioner of New York City in the mid-90's, Mr. Bratton made the cover of Time for helping Mayor Rudy Giuliani tame the untamable New York, from squeegee guys to wilding thugs. But Rudy, loath to share top billing, forced his brassy chief out."

Oct. 16, 2002: "We know that Virginia's governor, Mark Warner, is bucking to be the Rudy Giuliani of the crisis"

June 9, 2002: "Maybe if Mr. Bush brings Rudy Giuliani in as the new cabinet officer, he can work magic."

Dec. 12, 2001: Post-attacks interview with Giuliani. Long interview.

Casual Friday ... Extreme!

Today's edition of Casual Friday has been dubbed "Casual Friday Extreme!" by the Sam Seder Juggernaut. Because, we'll, we're not in the studio today. It's that casual. But not this casual:

So, the Drudge Report is linking to an Evening Standard story about an ancient picture of Tony Blair making an "obscene gesture." Maybe he's pretending to grab his "Wee Prime Minister." But maybe, just maybe, he's playing that sadistic game that junior-high boys tend to play. You know, the one where I make a circle with my thumb and forefinger below my waist, and if you look at it I get to punch you twice in the shoulder. Anyone? Anyone?

Tuesday, Hour 1

Post your comments here.

On his show last Friday, Bill O'Reilly linked a tragic fire that killed 10 people, including nine children, to illegal immigration. That's right: lax enforcement of immigration laws killed members of the Magassa and Soumare family. Watch the clip on Media Matters -- and listen to the voice of reason: Geraldo Rivera. Seriously: Geraldo Rivera.

O'REILLY: I'm basically saying that we must get this situation of illegal immigration under control. The chaos is killing children. Go.

RIVERA: I think to draw -- to make the connection between illegal immigration and that horrific fire in the Bronx two days ago is an injustice to the victims of that fire. Why did they die?

There's no code violations that they found. There were no required, you know -- everything in the building so far --

O'REILLY: Twenty-two people in the house.

RIVERA: There were two batteries missing in the fire alarm.

O'REILLY: Twenty-two people in a house.

RIVERA: But, Bill, the status of the immigration is not relevant.

My legal nanny has children in school with three of those victims. It is the human cause. And if you --

O'REILLY: This is what you missed. I'm going to give you the last word. But this is what you missed. This is a sanctuary city. That means the authorities do not ask any questions about anybody's status or anybody's condition.

Author and oil analyst Antonia Juhasz is our guest today in the second hour. Make sure to read her op-ed in the New York Times today, "Whose Oil Is It Anyway?"

In March 2001, the National Energy Policy Development Group (better known as Vice President Dick Cheney’s energy task force), which included executives of America’s largest energy companies, recommended that the United States government support initiatives by Middle Eastern countries “to open up areas of their energy sectors to foreign investment.” One invasion and a great deal of political engineering by the Bush administration later, this is exactly what the proposed Iraq oil law would achieve. It does so to the benefit of the companies, but to the great detriment of Iraq’s economy, democracy and sovereignty.

Does the following blurb read like the White House might be circling its wagons around the president ... and only the president?

The president did not call for the removal of any specific United States attorneys, said Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman. She said she had “no indication” that the president had been personally aware that a process was already under way to identify prosecutors who would be fired.

But Ms Perino disclosed that White House officials had consulted with the Justice Department in preparing the list of United States attorneys who would be removed.

Within a few weeks of the president’s comments to the attorney general, the Justice Department forced out seven prosecutors.

Paintball: Not just for office team-building anymore

Tuesday, Hour 2

Comments here.

Comin' up at 10:30 -- Author Antonia Juhasz returns to the show to discuss her op-ed in today's New York Times, "Whose Oil Is It Anyway?"

Seder listeners have a lot to say about immigration this morning, thanks to this story and Bill O'Reilly's ignorant, hateful statements on his show on Friday.

Tim in Freeport, Maine:

Question for your audience: How did an Immigrant come to be seen as synonymous with an Illegal Alien? In the case of the Bronx fire (a building built primarily of wood in 1901 might have had something to do with the heat and speed of the fire) that is how many will see the portrayal of this tragedy. Good write-up in the Times this morning about the funeral. I defy anyone with a heart (guess that leaves out Big Bill) to read that without tearing up.

Bruce in New Jersey:

I hope this reaches you -- I never emailed you before. Another cost to workers of that illegal immigrant falling off the roof in Nevada... not only does the employer benefit from the worker not being insured and for labor costs being lowered, but when our tax money pays for the uninsured worker's medical care, we taxpayers are subsidizing the destruction of our own wage rate.

Justin writes:

There is too much anti immigrant sentiment for a country where no one is from here. This subject angers me, because I am in New York City and here we have sort of popular sign out front that says "bring us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses." This is the greatest country in the world!

In August of 2006, 9/11 family members released a statement questioning the "entire veracity" of the 9/11 Commission report. [1]

In September of 2006, a documentary entitled "9/11: Press For Truth" was released, and family members at the National Press Club called for a new investigation into the events of 9/11. [2]

In October of 2006 a New York Times poll found that only 16 percent of Americans believe the Bush administration is telling the truth about 9/11. [3]

NONE of these stories were covered by the so called 'progressive media'.

(It is time for the 'progressive media' to start covering these stories.)

It is time to stop pretending that the very basis of the so-called 'war on terror' is the ONLY subject that the Bush administration has NOT lied about.

Support for Gonzales appeared to be collapsing under the weight of questions about his truthfulness and his management ability. White House spokesman Tony Snow offered a tepid defense when asked if Gonzales would stay on the job until the end of President Bush's term.

Remember when Ethan in Portland called in and said that Gonzales would be fired shortly after Bush voiced his unequivocal support for his attorney general? From AP today:

WASHINGTON - President Bush sent a powerful message of support Tuesday for embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, calling his longtime friend to express unwavering support in the face of calls for his resignation.

The White House also denied reports that it was looking for possible successors for Gonzales. "Those rumors are untrue," White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.

Bush called Gonzales from the Oval Office at 7:15 a.m. EDT and they spoke for several minutes about the political uproar over the firings of eight U.S. attorneys, an issue that has thrust the attorney general into controversy and raised questions about whether he can survive. The White House disclosed Bush's call to bolster Gonzales and attempt to rally Republicans to support him.

"The president reaffirmed his strong backing of the attorney general and his support for him," Perino said. "The president called him to reaffirm his support."

A Walk Down Memory Lane...With Sam And The Secret Service

We've just learned that for months leading up to the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York, the NYPD was spying on anyone who might show up at the convention with something negative to say about the president. Sam experienced this iron fist of security firsthand, and all he was doing was making friends on the convention floor. Watch the video.

You know things are really coming down when the GOP's OWN talking point is that Alberto Gonzales is just incompetent, not a lying crook. When they're trotting out Robert Novak to write this, you know they're staring down the barrel of eternal damnation. Fortunately your own personal spirit guide, Sam Seder, is here to lead you unharmed through this morass. Today we'll have Air America's own David Bender, law professor Erwin Chemerinsky, and Markos from Daily Kos. Bon Appetit.

Wednesday - The Senate Takes A Stand

Well the Senate Dems took a stand yesterday, setting up a showdown with Bush over Iraq funding and withdrawal. That leads us to the question of the day: If a president vetoes a bill that provides funding for the troops, doesn't that president hate the troops? We thought so. But just to be sure, we'll ask Christy Harvey from the Center for American Progress, and David Sirota from SirotaBlog. And we'll talk to Daniel Levy from the Century Foundation's Prospects for Peace Initiative about Condi Rice's trip to the Middle East.

The Straight Talk Express, Driving in Reverse

As Sam made clear today, John McCain's statements about how safe Baghdad has suddenly become are ludicrous. Well now, just after making those statements, McCain is backtracking.

Thursday: Sampson Takes The Stand

Keep your ears pressed to the radio (or computer) today, folks, cause we'll be keeping our ears pressed to the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, where Kyle Sampson will either throw Alberto Gonzales under the proverbial bus, or instantaneously forget everything he's done in his life before today. Actually, early indications are that he'll admit they did it, but say that "it" wasn't anything wrong. We'll break it all down with Atrios. And we'll welcome Dean Baker, author of The Conservative Nanny State, who will explain how conservatives use government to keep getting richer, while screwing everyone else. (Go to his site, get his book for FREE!)

Oh, also, Karl Rove dances and raps. This video is not suitable for small children.

Friday: Take Off Your Pants

It's casual Friday, and Sam's relaxing so much, he's even letting his back hair down. Give us a call, we're taking all comers, at 866-303-2270. In the first hour we'll welcome Joe Conason in studio, and after that, we'll host our very own Sam Seder Show Purity Ball. Bring the kiddies close to the radio transmitter, and we'll cleanse their souls. Or at least give them a good bath.
