Grassroots media activists won a major victory Thursday when the Bush administration announced it would not seek to overturn a court ruling that has blocked the Federal Communications Commission from implementing sweepings regulations that would allow for greater media consolidation.

The FCC, led by outgoing chairman Michael Powell, had approved new regulations in 2003 that would have allowed giant media corporations to own as many as three television stations, eight radio stations and a cable operator, as well as a newspaper in a single city.

The FCC's attempt to allow for greater media consolidation resulted in a massive grassroots organizing effort. The FCC received more than 750,000 comments on the issue, 99 percent of the comments opposed allowing for greater media consolidation.

Most of the country's major media corporations had lobbied the FCC to approve the changes. The companies included Viacom (which owns CBS), NBC, News Corporation which owns Fox, the Tribune Company, Gannett and The New York Times Company.

In 2003, the Prometheus Radio Project of Philadelphia filed a lawsuit to block the implementation of the FCC rule changes. In June 2004 a federal appeals court ruled in favor of Prometheus.

I've been writing about the SpongeBob flap as well as the PBS program that was censored because it involved a family with two moms who make maple syrup.

When I first read the PBS story, I must have just skimmed it, or maybe the first article I read about the program was not that clear on the matter. Because I somehow had the idea that the episode of "Postcards From Buster" featured a pair of lesbian cartoon rabbits. It doesn't. Apparently, like the cartoon Arthur that this program spun off from, this program includes live-action segments. A real human family that had taped a segment of the show was told that they were somehow too "offensive" to be seen on a show on PBS. Knowing this increases my anger and sadness exponentially.

I shared some thoughts here on the the moral value of teaching the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

One of the seven principles Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote is, "the inherent worth and dignity of every person". I truly believe that is what we should be teaching all children-- even if that does not fit with the "values" of their parents. I truly believe this is a value that needs to be promoted, because it contritbutes to the well-being of society as a whole, and is vital if we have any hope of peaceful existence in a diverse world. ---

I hope people who are Kos member will recommend this diary if they think it is worthwhile. Had to overcome some major inertia to finally put these thoughts into writing. ;-)

Also, re fact-checking:

Doyle absent as woes mount

More campaign-finance report discrepancies are uncovered

PETER WONG Statesman Journal

January 28, 2005

Where's Dan Doyle?

The question might not replace "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" as an educational TV program for children.

But it's on the minds of many at the state Capitol, since the Salem Republican resigned Wednesday as the House's chief budget writer and from the Legislature's joint budget committee. He did so under pressure as he faces a widening investigation into problems with his campaign-spending reports.

He remains the state representative from District 19, which covers part of South Salem, Aumsville and Turner.

Yet he has not been in his office on the fourth floor of the House wing.

He was absent from the House chamber.

No one answered the door at his home on the Creekside Golf Course in South Salem. The windows were shuttered Thursday.

He did not respond to telephone calls to his office and home, or e-mail messages.

Associates of a new wireless Internet business he is involved in starting up in Salem have removed his name from their Web site and voice mail system, according to a news report on Portland television station KATU.

A spokesman said Thursday that House Speaker Karen Minnis, R-Wood Village, has not spoken with Doyle since he called to resign as House co-chairman of the budget committee Wednesday.

Seems to me that the Neo-Cons are losing steam and the traditional left is waking up. Kofi Annan is getting some pretty heavy moral support.

From the BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/4214401.stm

Nobel winners rally behind Annan Annan says an inquiry into the oil-for-food scandal will "clear the air"

A group of 70 Nobel laureates have issued a statement endorsing the leadership of the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The document praises him for always taking a "critical look" at the UN and recommending improvements. Signatories include former US president Jimmy Carter and South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The statement responds to US criticism of Mr Annan over alleged corruption in the UN oil-for-food programme in Iraq. Some of the fiercest condemnations have come from Republicans - although the Bush administration has rejected their calls for Mr Annan's resignation.

Grateful

In their statement issued on Thursday, the Nobel Prize winners said: "We commend Secretary General Kofi Annan for effectively leveraging his moral authority, independence, and wisdom to elevate the United Nations to meet its highest principles." Signatories also include authors Nadine Gordimer, Guenther Grass, Toni Morrison, Seamus Heaney and Elie Wiesel, as well as former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. A spokesman for Mr Annan said he was grateful for the support. The oil-for-food programme allowed Iraq to sell oil in exchange for food and medicine between 1996 and 2003, to ease the effects of international sanctions. But it recently emerged that Saddam Hussein might have diverted part of the money for his own uses. Mr Annan has launched an independent investigation into the scandal, led by former US Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker.

Jesus, could you imagine how that would sound from the stage?

I mean. It would have a solid thump.

That's what's missing from Hendrix.

His rhythm.

Vaughan's lower end was more up to snuff, because of the stacked coil. Plus the Texas reverse polarity.

I mean the technology wasn't there in the 60's.

I remembering it being like so damn loud, the concert didn't have any sound problems whatsoever. And this was a State Fair, right?

We're not talking a gorge, like Red Rocks.

4 half stacks.

That's all he needed.

They would laugh at that at Ozzfest.

Their humbuckers don't bite like a Strat. The crowd would revolte at a Strat.

I think that's why most people stick to the Tele, like Slip Knot or Marilyn Manson.

Oh well, let's see what these folks are saying on MRR.

I think Ted is still under the illustion that the Neo cons have any decency. The first idea is that they really Don't know the truth. That they really WERE taken in by the people at the UK that said they had yellow cake. Then after that time had passed then he bought into the latest reason we are there. He saw the troops and he idenitified with them. "We are rolling into Bagdad." No Ted. Armed troops are rolling into Bagdad. You are an observer. His objectivity was comprised by the imbedding process.

Insult to injury Some wounded soldiers back from Iraq are having to pay for meals at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Veterans' groups say it's another symptom of fighting a costly war on the cheap.

- - - - - - - - - - - - By Mark Benjamin

Jan. 27, 2005 | WASHINGTON -- Most patients at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington have a lot on their minds: the war they just fought, the injuries they came home with, the future that lies ahead. The last thing a wounded soldier needs to worry about is where the next meal is coming from. But for hundreds of Walter Reed patients, that's a real concern. Starting this month, the Army has started making some wounded soldiers pay for the food they eat at the hospital.

What you will NOT see on tonight's ABC Nightline!!!

by NewWay4NewDay

Thu Jan 27th, 2005 at 19:19:41 PST

I just came from the townhall meeting hosted by Ted Koppel at St. John's Episcopal Church across from the White House in Washington D.C.

The topic is IRAQ: Why Stay?

The panel consisted of Joseph Wilson, Sen. George Allen (R), and Rep Marty Meehan (D)

There was some good dialogue, but mostly ended up that time was given primarily to the pro-war agenda. There were a few outbursts that will probably be edited out, and one major outburst from a Rabbi Waskau that you will not see because it was during a commercial break.

I am posting this now, so you are aware, and will watch Nightline, but am going to keep adding to this diary continuously until I can accurately describe the event as I witnessed it. Diaries :: NewWay4NewDay's diary ::

It started out seemingly okay. People were asked to submit questions to producers.

I submitted a question... it was about the effects of Depleted Uranium on our military personnel and Iraqui Civillians, and I wanted to ask what has been done to protect our troops from exposure to radioactive dust particles, and wanted to know if the Veterans Administration is prepared for the long term health effects to soldiers & their offspring caused by over exposure to DU.

The producer told me that since there were no helath experts on the panel, it was not a proper question for the theme of the show, and So, I restructured my comment, and she said it was better and would run it by the executive producer: "As a navy veteran who was deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1991, I am concerned that America is not prepared fo

Then to be even more offensive, he whipped a guilt trip on a troop (who's already paid his price for our freedom - Mr. Kopple having paid NONE) for questioning our leadership in this illegal and illconsidered military action.

Defending the policies of our administration is not the responsibility of our news media.

Some new Free Press pieces:

Ohio's Secretary of State Blackwell libels election protection attorney at junket sponsored by voting machine vendors

Ohio's Republican Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell has publicly labeled as "a complete idiot" an Election Protection attorney he is attempting to have sanctioned. Blackwell made the derogatory personal attack outside a banquet-laden conference in Columbus being sponsored by Diebold, ES&S, Triad and other voting machine vendors.

J. Kenneth Blackwell: The “J” is for Judas

Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell is perhaps the single most opportunistic politician in the history of Ohio. His career began in Cincinnati in the 1970s and progressed to statewide office until today. Along the way, he metamorphed from a charter reform Democrat, into a Carter Democrat, then a New Democrat, then an Independent, then a moderate Republican, then a conservative Republican, and is now the state’s leading reactionary right-wing Republican.

Blackwell has always represented opportunism in search of a political position. His flamboyant rhetorical style has never changed, as he has gone from arguing for civil rights to recently comparing himself to Gandhi and King as he offered himself up for arrest in defiance of a federal court ordering him to count provisional ballots cast within a voter’s county.

The mainstream media plays such an important role in the perceptions that people have in America. On social darwinism:

1) A lot of these people believe life is a zero-sum game, in the sense that if someone wins, someone else must lose. Some take it a narcissistic/sadistic step higher, in that _I cannot win, unless you lose_. I must win, you must be crushed.

2) It became clear during the Bell Curve debate, how deep the origins of social darwinism and scientific racism run in American society. How individual German nazis were sponsored to come to the USA and learn from the likes of Wycliffe Draper (Mankind Quarterly) and how many of these extremely rightwing foundations (Olin, Bradley, etc.) sponsored social darwinist research. Ernst Rudin (creator of the Nuremberg race laws, and mentor to Josef Mengele) studied in the US.

3) Back in the day, everyone (fascist, communist, socialist) believed that eugenics represented "progress". However, these foundations are like the organisational fossiles of that era.

What is the difference between when 'media-pundits' don't disclosing money paid to them to spew propaganda or when they spew propaganda/friendly to administration crap to get that 'exclusive' interview or access to the White-lying Houose that will boost their viewership/prestige?

In the original text, "People are living longer..." was followed by "...but not if I can help it." Rove decided it would be better to edit that out.

John the Boptist, I was talking about America's contribution to world cuisine. Of course jazz is the only original art form to come from America. Jazz is appreciated more in Europe and around the world than it is in it's own place of birth. Could be because it originated from the African American experience and it's well known that many white folks in America just don't "cotton" to that race music.

How many people were stuck by Lightning during the filming of F 9/11? ZERO!

How many people were struck by Lightning during the filming of The Passion of the Christ-life Actor? 2 including the lead Jim Caveziel. One guy was hit TWICE! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3209223.stm

So which movie do you think Zeus likes best?

Posted by: spocko [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 28, 2005 08:01 PM

Sure, people are living longer, but once we get the Baby Boomers out of the way, we won't have as many people on the Social Security teat.

Then again, if Bush's reproductive policies keep up the way they are, and birthrates go up from teens "abstaining", then we're still screwed.

SYNA, might I suggest that when posting you keep a dictionary handy to check your spelling. Your ignorance just adds fuel to the argument that America is slowly on the decline.

Freedom i on the march... Isn't that an oxymoron? Im thinking if you were free, you wouldn't have to march.

Actually I think it's a calculated way for them to make people accept the idea of "freedom" being brought by the barrel of a gun. Semantic warfare.

must be imagining that Germany has just cut unemployment benefits because it's going bancrupt from paying all the people that are on the dole.

I love Sam Kinison! I'm sure he would have a lot of fun things to say about the torture stuff.

"You think getting crushed to death is tough? Try being MARRIED! Oh. Oh. OHHHHHH! I could handle torture. I've been married TWICE!
