Fadlallah accuses U.S. of continuing crusade against Islam
Cleric describes pre-emptive wars as weapon to subdue opponents, dismantle UN

By Elie Hourani
Daily Star staff
Thursday, November 11, 2004

BEIRUT: Shiite cleric Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah said Wednesday that U.S. President George W. Bush's crusade against Islam had only stopped in theory but not in practice.

Speaking during his weekly forum, the Shiite cleric said Bush had used the term crusade several times in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks against the United States.

"But although he stopped using (the term) in the media, he has not really abandoned the idea," Fadlallah added.

He further said that Washington had "completely bypassed the United Nations in 2003, before launching a war against Iraq," adding that the way in which the U.S. launched a war against Iraq, against the advice of the international community, showed the ruling neoconservatives' disregard for this region.

[snip]

However, he said that the aggressiveness of the neoconservatives was not the result of the Sept. 11 attacks.

He stressed that American plans for gaining control of the oil of Arab states were made in the 1980's and that "the first Gulf war" was only a prelude to this plan. Fadlallah claimed that Washington had given Saddam Hussein's regime the nod to attack Kuwait in order to create the right atmosphere for the U.S. armed intervention in the Gulf.

"But the Sept. 11 attacks gave Washington an excuse to act like a wounded lion and to pretend to launch its anti-terrorism war in an attempt to get back at groups or countries that were behind the attacks," Fadlallah said.

He said that the U.S.-led "war on terror" was, in reality, a war against Islam and Muslims around the world.

I don't think the 'conspiracy' points, mentioned last night, should be dropped. They should be investigated coherently, piece by piece, and (maybe) covered either repeatedly or in regular installments, to either reveal/refute the actual truth.

The unrefutable fact though, which the public needs to digest, is that the current leaders of world societies ARE NOT GOOD MEN. What do you think they're really doing, behind closed doors? They are plotting and scheming against each other, and (in many societies) also plotting against their own people to maintain their positions.

Part of the problem now, in the U.S., is the overt-covert "plotting against their own people" part, which has never been quite so explicit or obvious. Just grow up and think more, they aren't out there scheming fuckin' altruism or anything; otherwise, there would be no world hunger, everyone would have healthcare, and so on. There are enough resources to realize all these things, and much more.

Once humanity gets out of this 'animal stage' behavior, major changes will become evident.

Scripps explains decision not to air "Saving Private Ryan" with official memo from Scripps.

Posted by: frngy at November 11, 2004 08:07 PM
********

The fall of an empire is inevitable and always seems to be beneficial... they say the Roman Empire collapsed when the Empire overextended itself militarily and the rich did not want to pay taxes to support the military--those who could moved far far away beyond the edges of the empire so they couldn't be taxed or recruited into the military...and the whole thing fell apart. Wonder how long it will take this time?

i might not have the best batting average (AVG), but my slugging percentage (SLG) is off the charts!
(In baseball statistics, slugging percentage (SLG) is a measure of the power of a hitter. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats. Total bases can be calculated from commonly used baseball statistics by using the formula TB = 1B + (2*2B) + (3*3B) + (4*HR).)

DNC

Matt Stoller raises the question which, while obviously not unrelated to the question of who should be in charge of the DNC, is probably the more important question -- just what should the DNC do with its time, money, influence, and resources?

People have the tendency to lump the politicians, the party institutions, and other assorted but unaffiliated groups together. But, the DNC doesn't really play the role that most people imagine. In fact, 3 years out of 4 it really doesn't have a clearly defined role. Aside from running the convention and the presidential nomination process, and trying to help elect the president, it doesn't really have much of a specific mandate. Obviously the DNC chief can have a public role, or not. But, given its nominal place on top of the power pyramid and its obvious ability to raise funds, it could do a lot more. Ideas?

The Democratic Circus Lyrics by David Byrne
-----------------------------

Found out this morning
There's a circus coming to town
They drive in Cadillacs
Using walkie-talkies, and the Secret Service

Their big top
Imitation of life
And all the flags and microphones
We have to cover our eyes

We play the sideshows
And we like the tunnel of love
And when we ride the ferris wheel
We're little children again

And when they're asking for volunteers
We'll be the first ones aboard
And when the ringmaster calls our names
We'll be the first ones to go ... to sleep

Stealing all our dreams
Dreams for sale
They sell 'em back to you

On with the show
Start the parade
We sand along
Sweep us away

It's political party time
Going down, going down
And the celebrities all come out
Coming down, coming down, coming...

The sun is going down
And the dogs are starting to howl
We stay out after dark
Eating cotton candy
And the music's playing...

How we all laughed!
We split our sides
The cameras flashed
We almost died!

The rain's gonna pour on down, falling out of the sky
Coming down, coming down
And the celebrities all run out, and the rain's
Coming down, coming down

Gonna rain,
Gonna rain, gonna rain
Gonna rain, gonna rain,
Rain, rain
Rain, rain

And now I wonder who's boss
And who he's leavin' behind?

them from gays

while hiding in your church with
your handpicked biblical passages
to suit you in your quest – you’d
force a woman’s body to be your
property at best, while with
the other pull the lever of some
black punk’s fateful electric
death, he never had a chance –

believe any, all lies told you, so long
as you can say “I won”

I’m barely here – I’ll float away – I don’t want to come out to play –
my stomachs sick and knees are weak forced to see these days so bleak

Got ta hand it to ya though – you
really know your stuff – brought
out every fag hater – out of the
fucking woodwork

My knees are weak – I can barely stand

Got to hand it to ya though – you
told lies they would believe

My heart is gone I cannot speak

Got ta hand it to ya though, you said
fuck the world - got enough to
say it too - just
hope your dick is big enough

I don’t want to die for you

But I’ll smile to these young faces
the ones that are before me on this
day, scared and heartsick too - I’ll
save my strength to find another way

– release me of the hate
and the haters in my way – you make
our job so difficult, connected as we
are – to carry you for ever so long
has really weighed us down

It is the dead, cold weight of a time
that never was – of a world that never
will be, I am infected with your illusions
that won’t let anyone live free

I want to lay out a photo of this U.S.
I’ll make it super giant sized then cut
it to pieces and glue it back together
with kind eyes and gentle hands

I want to find a salve to soothe my aching
heart and plaster your hate to a
wall washed over with my words -
strong and healing they will be
to keep your hate cemented, like
cedar’s roots grown deep enough to
keep evil there and we are mended

I want to squeeze your tiny minds
and lives between my hands
press them into strength gained

Flanders tried to wreck my song,

I hate his guts and Flanders is his name.
F-L-A-N-D-E-R-S, he's the man that I hate best.
I'd like to see his house go up in flames!
F-L-A
His name is Ned!
E-R-S
That's a stupid name!
He's worse than Frankenstein or Dr. No!
You can't upset him even slightly,
he just smiles and nods politely,
then goes home and worships nightly.
His leftorium is an emporium of Woo!
F-L-A
Don't yell at Ned!
D-E-R
His wife is dead.
Everybody hates that stupid jerk.
Springfield's caught with Homer's joyous loathing!
Filling clubs, with angry valentinos.
You don't have to move your feet,
just hate Flanders to the disco beat.
He's your perky, peppy, nightmare neighbourino!
If you like polite left-handers then I doubt you'll like Ned Flanders
or his creepy little offspring Rod and Tod.
That's us. Hooray!
F-L-A
His name is Ned!
E-R-S
He is so white bread.

weird, hijacked? tried to post a couple of times?

Is it okay to hate the haters –

I want to hate them
I imagine twisting the evil
driving those tiny minds
and tiny lives, grinding it in
the palm of my hand, squeezing
it dry and scatter the remains
with the tiniest puff of breath –

There could not be pain like this
without the looming stench of death

Wouldn’t it be nice to float away
from surrounding hate, sick of hate,
from hate, sick of what its gained

I fear it will consume me though,
so I thought I’d return it instead –

Dear Republican Shits congrats,
congrats for plunging us deep into
despair – thanks for using people,
consumed with hate absent of care

congrats on stirring up deep-seated
fear and disgusting bigotry, now so alive
and well revived by you, in this sick
divided country, these your good
old days, thanks for reminding me

Thanks for bringing out the gay bashers,
from their closets (so I can see my enemy)
rather than have to look at yourself
I know you’d gladly self-destruct

Rather put a puppet on your hand
to spear us with more than seething
words, you’d sooner kill than have
to deal with your gay feeling stirred

(we already knew your fears,
bizarre as though they were)

you’d rather kill what is only a phantom
in a land that’s far away than give up
your S.U.V. even every other day
never thinking about lives you’ve
used to pay

you’d rather send our kids to die
than have a fucking summit –
you’d spread your filthy bigotry
happy when others plummet

you keep the poor in their place,
so easy there to control, before you’d
let slip from your hand one single
piece of gold –rape the forest don’t
think ahead, and willingly give up
your rights, so long as the small
promise of power rests you in your
bed at night

– you’d stand for the torture
of citizens, smile secretly when a
fag gets AIDS,

Life During Wartime (Fear of Music)

Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons,
packed up and ready to go
Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway,
a place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire, off in the distance,
I'm getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstore, lived in the ghetto,
I've lived all over this town

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco,
this ain't no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey dovey,
I ain't got time for that now

Transmit the message, to the receiver,
hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, a couple of visas,
you don't even know my real name
High on a hillside, the trucks are loading,
everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nightime,
I might not ever get home

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco,
this ain't no fooling around
This ain't no mudd club, or C. B. G. B.,
I ain't got time for that now

Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
somebody might see you up there
I got some groceries, some peant butter,
to last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no
heaphones, ain't got no records to play

Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time
Can't write a letter, can't send a postcard,
I can't write nothing at all
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco,
this ain't no fooling around
I'd like to kiss you, I'd love you hold you
I ain't got no time for that now

Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock,
we blended with the crowd
We got computer, we're tapping pohne lines,
I know that ain't allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives,
or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle, so many times now,
I don't know what I look like!
You make me shiver, I feel so tender,
we make a pretty good team
Don't get

It's not the media's job to perform the checks and balances of our government. Last I checked it said in really big words: WE THE PEOPLE, not some of the people. Hell, Thomas Jefferson stated that this government was not created on the basis of trust, it was based on suspicion. Hence the checks and balances. It's our job as americans, true patriots to ensure that our hired officials are doing their job for us.

Part II
, love having your
rights while happily withholding
them from gays

while hiding in your church with
your handpicked biblical passages
to suit you in your quest – you’d
force a woman’s body to be your
property at best, while with
the other pull the lever of some
black punk’s fateful electric
death, he never had a chance –

believe any, all lies told you, so long
as you can say “I won”

I’m barely here – I’ll float away – I don’t want to come out to play –
my stomachs sick and knees are weak forced to see these days so bleak

Got ta hand it to ya though – you
really know your stuff – brought
out every fag hater – out of the
fucking woodwork

My knees are weak – I can barely stand

Got to hand it to ya though – you
told lies they would believe

My heart is gone I cannot speak

Got ta hand it to ya though, you said
fuck the world - got enough to
say it too - just
hope your dick is big enough

I don’t want to die for you

But I’ll smile to these young faces
the ones that are before me on this
day, scared and heartsick too - I’ll
save my strength to find another way

– release me of the hate
and the haters in my way – you make
our job so difficult, connected as we
are – to carry you for ever so long
has really weighed us down

It is the dead, cold weight of a time
that never was – of a world that never
will be, I am infected with your illusions
that won’t let anyone live free

I want to lay out a photo of this U.S.
I’ll make it super giant sized then cut
it to pieces and glue it back together
with kind eyes and gentle hands

I want to find a salve to soothe my aching
heart and plaster your hate to a
wall washed over with my words -
strong and healing they will be
to keep your hate cemented, like
cedar’s roots grown deep enough to
keep evil there and we are mended

I want to squeeze your tiny minds

FIGHT IGNORANCE: READ BUZZFLASH

The Unexplained Exit Poll Discrepancy

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

BuzzFlash was forwarded a copy of a new research paper (271k PDF) on the exit polls from the 2004 election.

In "The Unexplained Exit Poll Discrepancy," Dr. Steven F. Freeman says:

"As much as we can say in social science that something is impossible, it is impossible that the discrepancies between predicted and actual vote counts in the three critical battleground states [Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania] of the 2004 election could have been due to chance or random error."

The odds of those exit poll statistical anomalies occurring by chance are 250,000,000 to one. 250 MILLION to ONE.

He concludes the paper with this:

"Systematic fraud or mistabulation is a premature conclusion, but the election's unexplained exit poll discrepancies make it an unavoidable hypothesis, one that is the responsibility of the media, academia, polling agencies, and the public to investigate."

My boyfriend says don't post this but I'm going to. And maybe I'm the only one who feels this way. If so, call me crazy! (I'm Anne Heche!)
But I don't buy that this "highest service" to your country is serving in a war.
I'm a pacifist. And there may or may not be "good" wars.
I have no problem with respect for any who serves but I don't define service as being solely the military.
I realize that, as Noam Chomsky pointed out on the first Gulf War, we've all fallen into the right's "support our troops" argument. By that I mean, I don't hate our troops, I don't want them (or anyone) killed.
But I don't preface my remarks against the war with, "Now I support the troops." That's a non-issue. You're for the war or you're against it.
Follow me on this. You're on some crappy show that's not on Fox so the dopey anchor has to pretend to at least be slightly objective. Let's use the hideous Paula.
You support the war and you and I are on together.
I come on as the one against the war. (Fat chance, I know, people against the war don't get on the air that often.) Do I start saying, "Now first, Paula, I do support our troops ..."
If I do that, Paula grins to the camera at the end of the segment and says, "Well one thing we can agree on, we all support the troops."
So the take away is "we all support the troops" and it's just a minor detail as to how to best support the troops.
No one's really focusing on the issue of is the war right or wrong, should we be over there or not. Those are the side issues because as Paula points out for us, "we can all agree that we support our troops."
(I'm not Noam. If I were, I'd have stated the above better.)
I'll end this rant with, why is it the only people Al ever thanks are the miliatry. "Thank you for your service." He's had on diplomats, ambassadors, he's had on people who were in the Peace Corp. Go down the list, he's even had on a president he thinks was amazing. But the only one that gets "thank you for your service" is the military.
And though I love Unfiltered, how come every Tuesday we get "ask a vet" but we don't get a segment on "ask a peace advocate"?
Maybe I'm

But...alas!
Teach us Your real secret, Master! how to become
invisible, how to acquire love, and oh! beyond all, how to make gold.
But how much gold will you give me for the Secret

Then said the foremost and most foolish; Master, it is nothing; but here is an hundred thousand pounds. This did I deign to accept, and whispered in his earthis secret:
A SUCKER IS BORN EVERY MINUTE.

COMMENTARY
The term "gold bricks" is borrowed from American finance.
The chapter is a setting of an old story.
A man advertises that he could tell anyone how to
make four hundred a year certain, and would do so
on receipt of a shilling. To every sender he dispatched a post-card with these words: "Do as I do."
The word "sucker" is borrowed from American finance.
The moral of the chapter is, that it is no good trying to teach people who need to be taught.

SHAME ON YOU!!!

While I've been a politically active liberal Democrat all my life and generally applaud Air America's objective, with great chagrin, I listened to your show for only the second or third time this evening. I assure you it will be my last.

First, I heard Janeane Garofolo's flip comment insinuating an equivalence between neo-cons and Jews that quite frankly, recalls the time when right-wing John Birch types used to equate "Communist" with "Jew", the former functioning as a code word for the latter.

Look, I abhor neo-con pols as well but neither are most Neo-cons, Jews, nor most Jews, neo-cons. And I should haven't to tell you, Janeane. Their ascriptive identity is decidedly beside the point. You wouldn't stoop to calling Ohio Secretary of State, J. Lucien Blackwell an "Uncle Tom" because he's black and a Republican or would you?

Next, I heard Sam Seder say he'd like to see Ariel Sharon die or at the very least get hit by a bus. "Now, that Arafat's dead: one good deed deserves another" How pathetic! How juvenile!

Don't we all wish our political opponents to disappear from the face of the earth, Sharon, no less than Bush? Alas, the world isn't so simple. First of all, I shouldn't have to remind Mr. Seder of an important fact: Arafat begot Prime Minister Sharon. After rejecting Barak and Clinton; after Arafat, in fact, ensured Barak's electoral defeat by rejecting 95-98% of the Occupied territories and 50% of Jerusalem (read Dennis Ross) and opting for violence instead, 62% of Israel elected the Palestinians greatest enemy. Can you blame them?

Second of all, Mr. Seder, you should be careful what you wish for. If Sharon dies, we get Bibi. Or would you prefer a Moledet-Likud coalition that calls for expelling the Palestinians? Sharon, I'm afraid, is the last bulwark between sanity and Revisionist Zionism and the National Religious Parties. You would do well to study Israeli politics before wishing for calamity-- a calamity because it only would exacerbate the current stalemate, if not sign peace's death certificate.

All of which leads me to wonder whether the name of your radio show isn't, in fact, ironic. The MAJORITY Report,huh? I'm beginning to wonder whether you perfectly mirror that other organization that fancies itself a MAJORITY.

In a rambunctious, healthy, pluralist democracy, we should be skeptical, if not fearful, of any group that claims it possesses some kind of metaphysical, abstract, a priori MAJORITY. As James Madison understood, such is a prescription for arrogance, intolerance, and worse, tyrrany.

But after listening to your show, I think I'd prefer a MINORITY report or the Voice of Dissent; which incidentally, if you read Thomas Paine, is the true Voice of America.

Posted by: English Opium Eater at November 11, 2004 08:38 PM

I have no problem with respect for any who serves but I don't define service as being solely the military.

I realize that, as Noam Chomsky pointed out on the first Gulf War, we've all fallen into the right's "support our troops" argument. By that I mean, I don't hate our troops, I don't want them (or anyone) killed.

But I don't preface my remarks against the war with, "Now I support the troops." That's a non-issue. You're for the war or you're against it.

Posted by: Elaine at November 11, 2004 08:32 PM

Amen.

I'll go a step further. I don't support the troops. I think that each and everyone of them should have refused to go.

I don't support the bloated military budget that is taking away from seniors, veterans, children, and the least capable in our society.

I don't support any asshole who thinks that killing the ultimately defenseless is 'glorious', in any way shape or form.

Rove never meant to take most states by the margin they eventually did -- even considering there might have been as many as 16 states that were tweaked. Especially Florida. I think Florida got away from them big time.

Just wondering...

Posted by: Frankie at November 11, 2004 08:43 PM

Fundamentally there's no difference. In both cases the powers that be ordered the troops to engage in what amounts to war crimes. The citizens of Nazi Germany who's sons and husbands were thrown in the meat grinder had no choice but to support 'the troops', but unfortunately also in both cases that same group of people, out of fear and nationalist belligerance, also supported those that gave the orders.

Iraq is a war crime. It's criminal aggression, which is the crime which most of the Nazis were hung for at Nuremburg.

When is Janeane going to have a kid? I was just thinking about that the other day... Her biological clock is just sitting there and tickin', and I was wondering if she'll ever have a kid? She would be a good mom, I think. If she needs any sperm donors, I could open a clinic, haha! It's probably more fun to do it the old-fashioned way though, instead of the "Wacko-Jacko" test tube way, ya know what I mean? Haha! I mean, I know it ain't none of my business, But still, when is Janeane going to have a baby, if ever?!!!

Buzz linked to Fuck the south on Monday. If it's humor, I'm missing it.

"ck the South. Fuck 'em. We should have let them go when they wanted to leave."

"We"? How old is this person? (The author of fuck the south, not the person who copied this into a post.)

"But no, we had to kill half a million people so they'd stay part of our special Union. Fighting for the right to keep slaves - yeah, those are states we want to keep. And now what do we get? We're the fucking Arrogant Northeast Liberal Elite? How about this for arrogant: the South is the Real America? The AuthenticAmerica. Really?"

Who do you think is in the south? Are you stereotyping everyone as Archie Bunkers? That's a pretty big stretch. But since you brought up African-Americans in the form of slaves, you are aware that African-Americans live in the south currently, right?
If you want to fight a stereotype, I'm not sure you do it by responding with one ("Arrogant Northeast Liberal Elite" vs this broad generalization of the south).

"Cause we fucking founded this country, assholes. Those Founding Fathers you keep going on and on about? All that bullshit about what you think they meant by the Second Amendment giving you the right to keep your assault weapons in the glove compartment because you didn't bother to read the first half of the fucking sentence? Who do you think those wig-wearing lacy-shirt sporting revolutionarieswere? They were fucking blue-staters, dickhead. Boston? Philadelphia? New York? Hello? Think there might be a reason all the fucking monuments are up here in our backyard?"

Oh, so you (the fuck the south author, not the person who posted it) apparently came over on the Mayflower. And offers a big f-you to every one else who was an immigrant later on OR was already here. In fact, they're all "assholes" by your statements. Does no one else get how racist that is? Or the implied logic (if that word can be used) that lives were "wasted" fighting to end slavery because of some voting reality today? Is no one else offended by that talk?

The DNC should spend the election and the mid-terms supporting our candidates, and pushing our agenda. The rest of the time should be spent doing the same thing.

This is done by enlisting county coordinators in EVERY SINGLE COUNTY IN AMERICA. Make it interesting and fun for those people, have a special central website for them. Have them estyablish three levels of phone tree: one for election work, one for emergency issues, and one for special projects. Base operating budgets on population per county. Some county coordinators can operate out of their livingrooms, some need offices and staff. Be sure to provide adequate staff in heavy fund raising areas, regardless of population levels. Have county cooridinator create an event crew (theater and perfroming arts students are useful in this capacity, and you can write evaluations, so they get academic work study credit), and a list of venues willing to discount or donate use of facilities. Do the same with caterers, grocery stores, any business willing to contribute cash or in-kind. In-kind donations can be better in some cases for all concerened. Use the venues, hold events, and make sure you don't lie about the events. This approach is useful just because the republicans can't emulate it.

Open a string of nonprofit Democratic Party Bingo Parlors across the country, and have decent prizes. Open Democrat Reading Rooms that carry our propaganda, mostly the old stuff... y'know, Payne, Jefferson, Madison, Adams... not liberal or progrssive exclusively, but conservative and centrist democratic as well. Democracy wants to hear from everyone.

Start a CONGREGATION OF TRUTH movement, with a program of respected religious leaders who travel from church to church (and anywhere else that'll have them) and present a program based on truth and morality according to the great religious teachings.

Of course, if you give me time, I can do much better, but this is what flew off the top of my head.

These are the things I haven't already discussed. Look over the last couple of days, and you'll find a lot from me about steps to move from a conspicuous consumer capitalism to high-craft ethic capitalism.

I figger 4.2 million stolen (perhaps redirected) votes... which is astounding. Much more than they wanted. Once the routines were turned on... they kinda got out of hand. Rove never meant to take most states by the margin they eventually did -- even considering there might have been as many as 16 states that were tweaked. Especially Florida. I think Florida got away from them big time.

Rove: "You idiot... why didn't you turn it off?"

And though I love Unfiltered, how come every Tuesday we get "ask a vet" but we don't get a segment on "ask a peace advocate"?Posted by: Dr. Zimmerman Robert at November 11, 2004 08:54 PM

Oh, so you (the fuck the south author, not the person who posted it) apparently came over on the Mayflower. And offers a big f-you to every one else who was an immigrant later on OR was already here. The "Founding Fathers" didn't "found" this country. They founded thirteen colonies. But the country was here before them. And the nation expanded after them.
Maybe a Native American could shoot back, "Fuck the south and fuck the north! I'm sick of your squabbles! We were here, this is our country and we're tired of all this shit. These 'Founding Fathers' you keep bragging about? Hey, it was our land!"
It's just nonsense this bullshit that keeps getting posted. Yesterday two people posted about how painful this kind of talk was for them.
I think this is really the sort of crap that should be left to the likes of Rush. It reminds me of the sort of thing that led Clinton to make that speech after Oklahoma about how speech creates an environment. I really wish people would try to stop stereotyping. Especially when two people let us know last night that this stereotyping was bothering them.

S.Korea Made Near Bomb-Grade Uranium-U.N.
Thu Nov 11, 2004 01:56 PM ET

By Louis Charbonneau

VIENNA (Reuters) - The U.N. nuclear watchdog confirmed in a confidential report on Thursday that South Korea enriched a tiny amount of uranium in 2000 to a level close to what would be useable in an atomic weapon.

A senior diplomat close to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also said a senior government scientist, the president of the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute in Taejon, South Korea, had authorized the experiments with the uranium and knew about work with plutonium, also useable in nuclear weapons.

South Korea's government has said it had no knowledge of plutonium and uranium experiments, though the IAEA said it was still trying to verify this.

"Although the quantities of nuclear material involved have not been significant, the nature of the activities -- uranium enrichment and plutonium separation -- and the failures by (South Korea) to report these activities in a timely matter ... is a matter of serious concern," said the report, obtained by Reuters.

I received this email yesterday

It's the first I've received from this office. I don't even know how they have my email. Maybe from some petition I signed. Dunno. I just found it rather odd.
Dear Ohio Voter:

Thank you for your patience and perseverance on November 2. The eyes of the nation and world were on Ohioans last week and you showed one and all how an informed, stable democracy functions.

Despite long lines and small technical glitches here and there, Ohio voters were calm and civil. You went to the polls in record numbers and made your voices heard. In the end, Ohio was not "another Florida". Ohio was itself - a proud state made up of informed, patriotic Americans determined to have their votes counted by their neighbors at the polls, and not by lawyers in the courts.

Thank you for the wonderful example you gave the world on November 2, 2004.

Much of what needs to be done is just organisation, but it's not done correctly, because many of the people doing it are guys in their 50's who can't quite get it into their heads that 70% of the people who can and will help them are women, so they need to learn to respect the things women like to do, and if they don't know what those things are, they need to ASK.

There are several areas that need to be covered. Counties should have adults who serve as youth club coordinator, and they should assist student club leaders whenever possible. We need to get people anbd businesses to sponsor Explorer Troups on behalf of the Democratic Party. Almost all Explorer troups go camping, but more than half have a special area of interest. Start grooming young democrats early. Since democratic training properly done is quite the opposite of indoctrination, then far from having anything to be ashamed of, we can be proud of what we teach the young folk. American History, or even American Revolution Re-Enactment Camp is also an interesting idea. Good resume credit for any aspiring pol.sci., am. hist., or prf. arts major.

Create a Party Platform CD with answers to any question a punidt might ask, or for that matter, any citizen might ask. Call it 'DEMOCRATIC ANSWERS'.

If Bush voters were under represented in the exit polls and that's why they were so wrong. . .then how did "Moral Values" become the number one issue in the election according to the same exit polls?

The very issue conservatives are patting themselves on the back about may be the proof that the polls were not wrong, something else was.

Time to start asking tougher questions on this issue.

Bush, Blair to Discuss Life After Arafat
Thu Nov 11, 2004 09:03 PM ET
By Peter Graff

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush is expected to give an outline of his vision for a Middle East without Yasser Arafat on Friday, with his most loyal ally Tony Blair by his side.

The British Prime Minister arrived in Washington late on Thursday and dined with the president, becoming the first world leader to congratulate Bush in person on his reelection last week.

Their joint press conference will give Bush his first opportunity to speak at length in public about his plans for Middle East diplomacy since the death of the veteran Palestinian leader in France.

She's great, but she can be a bit boisterous at times Mom still hasn't gotten a computer yet. She says y'all razzed her about that. Anyway, I'm her daughter and I need your help big-time...

We've all been talking a lot about what we can do to take charge as citizens and make a statement. Here is one organization, headed up by myself and other concerned citizens:

On January 20, 2005 (Inauguration Day), our grassroots, non-profit organization (Orlando) will call into action a national boycott of gasoline in the United States of America. We are urging millions of citizens to participate in our effort to demand and promote alternative energy sources. Citizens of this great country are frustrated, not only by the high cost of gasoline, but also by the failure of our representatives in Congress who speak of pursuing alternative energy sources, but never act on their promises.
Please help us out... Lets make a difference... Lets act and prepare to boycott gas on G.W.'s big day.

This "honest" question strikes me as a bit facetious. Clearly there's science and there's science. Science that gives right thinking xian nations power and technology is fine. Science which contradicts the Bible is bad. If a scientist gives you a TV or a gun, you say "cool, how do I work this in to my bible-lovin' lifestyle". If a scientist gives you evolution, you say "back demon".

Frist Says Filibusters of Bush Nominees Must End
Thu Nov 11, 2004 08:44 PM ET
By Thomas Ferraro

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has long favored a change in Senate rules, said on Thursday "one way or another" procedural roadblocks against federal judicial nominees must end.

Frist noted that Senate Democrats have already used so-called filibusters to deny confirmation votes on 10 of President Bush's appeals court nominees.

"The Senate cannot allow the filibuster of circuit court nominees to continue," Frist said in a speech for delivery to The Federalist Society, a conservative group.

------------------------------

How we'll make a difference:

By not using our national voice to stand up for what is right and by remaining in a state of complacency for four years, we have allowed our government to sell our democracy to big business, oil companies and questionable contractors who have many conflicts of interest with the current administration.

By asking everyone across America to boycott gasoline on Inauguration Day 2005 (Jan. 20), we WILL deliver a very clear statement to all of our Representatives, Senators and officials in the White House... The message: We the people are in charge of this country and excercise control over its direction, not the greedy and powerful elite.

If you are frustrated with governmental polices, outraged by the skyrocketing cost of gasoline, or discouraged by the lack of progress made to find alternative energy sources, we are asking for your support. So tell all your family, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, and even strangers on the street to take part in our nationwide boycott of gasoline.

Sam says something very rarely on the air which might be considered condescending or rude to Janeane. Often Janeane gets het up and then there are minutes (or hours!) of Janeane dumping on Sam, guests, everyone else. Make sure to bring that up in your therapy session.

Hey, I used to be one of those Rightwing virgins, and I don't look like everyone's sister or a FARM ANIMAL. I'm adorable.

That's great, and I don't doubt it. But what did you look like before the exorcism?

Democrats Cry Foul, Urge Vote Inquiry

By WILLIAM MARCH wmarch@tampatrib.com

Dubious Democrats

Arthur Pinner, Dixie County Democratic chairman, took the argument further. He voted personally for Bush, he said, ``on account of his morals.''

Kerry ``was a liberal way down the road; he believed in same-sex marriage and abortion,'' Pinner said. ``It came out in all the magazines.''

Pinner couldn't name which magazines reported that - in fact, Kerry opposes gay marriage - before clarifying that his source wasn't a magazine.

``Pamphlets that was passed out in church,'' he said. He wasn't sure whom the pamphlets came from, but said, ``I believed them enough so I didn't vote for him.''

Jenny Nash, spokeswoman for the Florida Division of Elections, said the allegations of fraud are wrong.

``These groups prior to the election were trying to plant doubt in voters' minds pertaining to touch screens,'' and they've switched to optical- scan machines, she said. ``If you look at the statistical history, the voting results were similar to past elections.''

....churches should not be allowed to play politics esp. if they have non-profit status. Click my name for link to Tampa Tribune article.

The best thing for the Democrats is Jerry Falwell on TV...every night...open forum.

That will scare the shit out of 78% of America.

New Zealand is not perfect, but they do have a representational government where every group gets a voice. They also don't allow nukes near them...much to the chagrin of the U.S.

~~~ how did "Moral Values" become the number one issue in the election according to the same exit polls? ~~~
Moral Values was picked as most important by 22% of the people polled. A little better than 1/5th of the population.
So they get to fucking run everything now?
Did I miss something? Is there an hour three?
Religion w/o Science is Superstition; Science w/o Religion is Materialism. True Religion is in harmony with science and reason.
The World's Religions are the same in essence. All the Religions are One.
Fundamentalism hurts.
you cant even educate them.
Posted by: Greg Long at November 11, 2004 09:22 PM
Sorry greg, going to have to disagree with you there. I was raised to be a right wing neocon fundamentalist...etc, and I've educated myself, changed, grown, morphed...and I'm nothing like that now. So...THEY can be educated. Just like we can learn to cut people some slack and give them some time to evolve.
Bible thumpers believe they are being conscientious by believing the Bible and those without it are lost. You think the same thing about science.
Posted by: preFasc Consultant at November 11, 2004 09:21 PM
If 100 people read a science book they'd all pretty much agree on what the book said. If 100 people read the bible you'd get 100 different meanings.
That's why science and religion are NOT alike.
