Republicans Block Progress and Law Making to the Bitter End
"It’s no wonder this Congress accomplished so little. Our Republican friends hardly broke a sweat. In 2004, House Republicans worked fewer days than in any single session of Congress since 1948. President Harry Truman called that Republican Congress the ‘do-nothing Congress.' Today, you might call this Republican Congress the ‘do-less-than-nothing Congress.’"
- Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD), House Democratic Whip

As the 108th Congress comes to a close, Americans are finding House Republicans have consistently failed to live up to their responsibilities. In fact, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives worked the fewest number of legislative days this year - 103 days - of any single session of Congress since 1948. Meanwhile, five million more Americans have lost their health insurance, four million more have been squeezed into poverty and the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission still have not been acted on.

What has the Republican leadership been doing instead of creating jobs, making healthcare affordable and defending our country? Where were the basic needs and concerns of the American people in the Republican schedule? They found time to hand out new tax breaks for wealthy corporate interests, gave the drug industry billions in windfall profits, and create new subsidies for HMOs. But they did not have the time to help the nation’s 8 million unemployed or 45 million without affordable health care.

Hey Tonid! :)

I think it's much ado about nothing, but...
yeah, they are really trying to take him to task over that Mary Cheney comment. I find this ironic, sad, and sort of funny, since during the Vice-Presidential Debate, John Edwards brought up Mary first as well, practically in the same context as Kerry did Wednesday, and what did the VP say to Edwards ...???... Thank you for the lovely comments about my family. That's it. Now, Dick and Lynn are outraged? WhatEVAH...!

Besides, Mary Cheney is a thorn in the gay community's side. She's done very little to change her party's attitude towards gay people when she has enormous opportunities available for her to do so - She chooses to remain silent. And that IS her choice. But, to many gay people I know, that's selfish, self-loathing behavior. The gay community has little respect for her.

And on that note, shall we have us a Bloody Mary for brunch? ;p

Saddam’s Complaint

I was house-sitting at the ranch in Crawford, Texas
watching a little cable and baggin’ some rays.
Kinda wishing I was back in my palace
I was thinking ‘bout the good old days.

Was a little before noon just this Saturday
when G-Dub done gave me a ring.
Said there’d be a jet picking me up in an hour
and not to bring anything.

I was like, “Boss-man, what’s up?...who’s gonna look after your ranch
while you’re livin’ it up in D.C.?”
He said, “Dean’s giving a foreign policy speech on Monday, …
and there’s another place you gotta be.”

So I got on the plane and now I’m back in Iraq,
Got jet lag and I’m feelin’ a little cruddy.
I told G-Dub’s henchmen, “What’s going on, I thought we had a deal…”
And one of ‘em said, “Get in the hole, buddy.”

US asks Britain to deploy troops in more parts of Iraq: TV

24 minutes ago Politics - AFP

LONDON (AFP) - The United States wants Britain to deploy troops in more volatile parts of Iraq (news - web sites), as a new offensive on insurgent-held Fallujah looms, reports from Britain said.

"Ministry of Defence sources have told Channel Four News that the US military has lodged a formal request for our troops to cover forces which are to be re-deployed for a renewed offensive against insurgents in the rebel city of Fallujah," Britain's Channel Four television said on its website, www.channel4.com.

"Its understood that the commanding officer of the reserve betallion of the Black Watch is looking at a request for some 650 personnel to provide cover for the Americans," it said.

Some 8,000 British troops are currently in Iraq but they are all in the relatively quiet, oil-rich south of the country, with their headquarters in Basra city.

.S. Probes if GIs Refused Iraq Mission

36 minutes ago Middle East - AP

By JOHN J. LUMPKIN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The Army is investigating reports that several members of a reservist supply unit in Iraq (news - web sites) refused to go on a convoy mission, the military said Friday. Relatives of the soldiers said the troops considered the mission too dangerous.

The reservists are from the 343rd Quartermaster Company, which is based in Rock Hill, S.C. The unit delivers food and water in combat zones.

According to The Clarion-Ledger newspaper in Jackson, Miss., a platoon of 17 soldiers refused to go on a fuel supply mission Wednesday because their vehicles were in poor shape and they did not have a capable armed escort.

The paper cited interviews with family members of some of the soldiers, who said the soldiers had been confined after their refusals. The mission was carried out by other soldiers from the 343rd, which has at least 120 soldiers, the military said.

Convoys in Iraq are frequently subject to ambushes and roadside bombings.

Greenspan says oil price agony milder than in 1970s
1 hour, 8 minutes ago Business - AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Soaring oil prices should inflict less damage on US economic growth and inflation than the 1970s oil shock, Federal Reserve (news - web sites) chairman Alan Greenspan (news - web sites) revealed.

But the harm could intensify if oil prices moved "materially higher," he warned.

"The impact of the current surge in oil prices, though noticeable, is likely to prove less consequential to economic growth and inflation than in the 1970s," Greenspan said Friday.

Oil prices now were only three-fifths of the peak in February 1981 after accounting for inflation, and the rise in imported oil prices amounted to about 0.75 percent of economic output, he said.

"The effects were far larger in the crises of the 1970s," Greenspan said in a prepared speech here to the National Italian American Foundation.

"But, obviously, the risk of more serious negative consequences would intensify if oil prices were to move materially higher," he said.

When churches head left

Thu Oct 14, 5:03 PM ET

By John Leo

America's mainline Protestant churches are in trouble. One sign is shrinking membership. Another is turning their political policymaking over to fringe leftists whose deepest instinct is to blame America and pummel Israel whenever possible. The latest disgrace is the Presbyterian Church's plan for selective divestment in Israel--ending the church's investment in multinational companies that the church believes bear particular responsibility for the sufferings of the Palestinian people. For example, the Presbyterians say they may divest themselves of Caterpillar stock, because bulldozers made by that company are used to level Palestinian homes in Israel's antiterrorism campaign. Of course, these bulldozers can also be used to move debris after Palestinian suicide bombers have finished blowing up another round of women, children, and other civilian bystanders in Israel.

Poll: Bush Allies See Greater Terror Risk

Mon Oct 11,11:06 PM ET White House - AP

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - More than two-thirds of the people living in Australia, Britain and Italy — three countries allied with the United States in the Iraq (news - web sites) war — believe the war has increased the threat of terrorism.

Leaders of those countries — prime ministers Tony Blair (news - web sites) of Britain and John Howard of Australia and Premier Silvio Berlusconi of Italy — all get low marks from their people for their handling of the war on terrorism, an Associated Press-Ipsos poll shows.

More than half of those in the United States, 52 percent, believe the Iraq war has increased the threat of terrorism, while three in 10 in the United States think it has decreased the threat — a view promoted by President Bush (news - web sites).

"In the context of the presidential campaign in the United States, this is undeniably a blow for George W. Bush, since it shows that a majority of Americans don't agree with the main justification for his policy in Iraq," said Gilles Corman, research director at Ipsos-Inra of Belgium, who studies public opinion trends across Europe.

US judge hears lawsuit over rejected voter registrations in Florida

26 minutes ago U.S. National - AFP

MIAMI (AFP) - A US federal judge started hearing a lawsuit calling for the inclusion on Florida's voter rolls of about 10,000 people whose registration forms were rejected because they were not properly filled out.

Judge James Lawrence King told the parties he was putting the case on a fast track as the US elections are just over two weeks away.

The AFL-CIO trade union and others have filed the lawsuit claiming that keeping people off the voter rolls because they did not properly fill out registration forms was a violation of electoral legislation. They claimed a disproportionate number of blacks and Hispanics were among those kept off voter rolls.

Under the Radar: U.S. To Double Troop Presence in Colombia
News Report/Analysis, Bill Weinberg,
Pacific News Service, Oct 14, 2004

Editor's Note: With little media attention, the U.S. Congress recently doubled the number of U.S. military advisors allowed in Colombia. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Colombians marched for an end to the Western Hemisphere's longest-running and bloodiest war.

Colombia makes few headlines in the United States these days. But Washington's involvement in the Western Hemisphere's longest, bloodiest war is rapidly escalating, as the world's attention is elsewhere. The latest signal of increased U.S. embroilment comes just as a vocal civil movement is emerging in Colombia to demand an end to the war.

The U.S. Congress approved last weekend a doubling of the Pentagon's troop presence in Colombia, where a wave of protest has erupted as some 1.4 million public-sector workers walked off their jobs and took to the streets for a one-day strike. Organized by major trade unions as well as civil organizations, the Oct. 12 strike demanded an end both to President Alvaro Uribe's push to join Bush's Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and to the rights abuses and atrocities associated with the government's counter-guerrilla war -- which the United States has funded to the tune of $3.3 billion since Plan Colombia was passed in 2000.

Posted by: Bart at October 15, 2004 02:31 PM

The vote in Washington two days earlier doubled the cap on U.S. military advisors in Colombia to 800, and raised the cap on the number of U.S. civilian contract agents -- pilots, intelligence analysts, security personnel -- from 400 to 600. The measure came as a little-noticed part of the 2005 Defense Department authorization act, and was a defeat for human rights groups that were pushing for a lower cap. The new 800/600 cap is exactly what the White House asked for. An earlier House version would have set a 500 cap for military personnel and kept the cap for civilian contractors at 400, but this was rejected in joint committee. A proposal establishing these caps in the Senate -- known as the Byrd amendment for Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.V.) -- was defeated in June by a vote of 58 to 40. Among the two senators who abstained was John Kerry.

The authorization measure is ostensibly aimed at helping the Colombian government fight "against narcotics trafficking and against activities by organizations designated as terrorists," naming the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC). But rights groups point to a long record of close collaboration between Colombia's armed forces and the AUC, a rightist paramilitary group. And while U.S. troops are officially barred from actual combat missions in Colombia, many fear that Washington is on a slippery slope.

OP-ED COLUMNIST
Block the Vote
By PAUL KRUGMAN

arlier this week former employees of Sproul & Associates (operating under the name Voters Outreach of America), a firm hired by the Republican National Committee to register voters, told a Nevada TV station that their supervisors systematically tore up Democratic registrations.

The accusations are backed by physical evidence and appear credible. Officials have begun a criminal investigation into reports of similar actions by Sproul in Oregon.

Republicans claim, of course, that they did nothing wrong - and that besides, Democrats do it, too. But there haven't been any comparably credible accusations against Democratic voter-registration organizations. And there is a pattern of Republican efforts to disenfranchise Democrats, by any means possible.

Some of these, like the actions reported in Nevada, involve dirty tricks. For example, in 2002 the Republican Party in New Hampshire hired an Idaho company to paralyze Democratic get-out-the-vote efforts by jamming the party's phone banks.

But many efforts involve the abuse of power. For example, Ohio's secretary of state, a Republican, tried to use an archaic rule about paper quality to invalidate thousands of new, heavily Democratic registrations.

Even in these darkest of times – no, especially in these darkest of times – we gather as bioneers to celebrate life. It's what the Tibetans call "crazy wisdom." As Tom Robbins writes, "Crazy wisdom is the wisdom that evolves when one, while refusing to avert one's gaze from the sorrows and injustices of the world, insists on joy in spite of everything. Ancient Egyptians believed that when a person died, the gods immediately placed his or her heart in one pan of a set of scales. In the other pan was a feather. If there was imbalance, if the heart of the deceased weighed more than the feather, he or she was denied admittance to the afterworld. Only the lighthearted were deemed advanced enough to merit immortality."

Several years ago, we held an evening round table on Ecological Medicine here at the Bioneers conference. A midwife got up from the audience to speak. She said she viewed the state of the world through the lens of her work. There comes a moment during labor when a woman knows she cannot possibly draw another excruciating breath; cannot endure even one more agonizing contraction. Right then, said the midwife, she knows the baby is about to be born.

The baby is being born. These are birth pains.

Keep the faith.

Author and filmmaker Kenny Ausubel is the founder and co-executive director of Bioneers. The 15th annual Bioneers conference takes place Oct. 15-17, at Marin Center in San Rafael, Calif.

"This amounts to authorization of increased involvement by U.S. troops in an internal armed conflict in Colombia," says Kimberly Stanton, deputy director of the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA). "And it was passed without significant public debate. We are sliding into a protracted civil war in Colombia."

In the general strike, hundreds of thousands of workers, joined by peasants and students, shut down cities throughout the country. Bogota's central square, Bolivar Plaza, was filled with some 300,000 people -- Colombia's largest protest in recent memory. Business was also paralyzed in Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga and Cartagena, and traffic was blocked on the Pan-American Highway. In addition to protesting the war and FTAA plans, the strikers also opposed Uribe's scheme to alter the constitution to allow himself to seek another term in office. The hardline Uribe, Bush's closest ally in South America, has refused to negotiate with the FARC, Colombia's biggest guerilla army. A negotiated settlement to the conflict was among the strikers' demands.

An Oct. 11 New York Times story on the troop cap authorization claimed that "Under Mr. Uribe's administration, violence has ebbed in Colombia." But Colombia human rights groups say that atrocities have more than doubled since Uribe took office in 2002.

The bill that the House voted on a couple weeks ago wasn't an actual draft bill.

This one is:

The Congressional vote also coincided with the release of a new Amnesty International report, "Colombia: Violence Against Women," which finds that rape and other sexual crimes -- including genital mutilation -- are frequently used by both the paramilitaries and the official security forces against communities accused of collaborating with the guerrillas. The report says the guerrillas, in turn, have used similar brutal tactics against those thought to be collaborating with the army or paramilitaries.

"Women and girls are raped, sexually abused and even killed because they behave in ways deemed as unacceptable to the combatants, or because women may have challenged the authority of armed groups, or simply because women are viewed as a useful target on which to inflict humiliation on the enemy," said Susan Lee, director of Amnesty's Americas program.

The vote also came days after yet another peasant leader was assassinated. On Oct. 6, the body of Pedro Jaime Mosquera Cosme, an Afro-Colombian leader of the Campesino Association of Arauca, was found near the Venezuelan border, with what the group called "clear signs of torture." Arauca is one of the most violent of Colombia's departments, where numerous campesino leaders have been killed by paramilitaries and the army in recent years.

Rights advocates fear that in next year's Defense Dept. authorization act, Congressional hardliners will again push to get the cap on U.S. troop levels raised -- or done away with altogether, as proposed by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA). WOLA's Stanton says the lack of media coverage of the vote --and Colombia generally -- is a bad sign. "The American people are not aware that we are increasingly involved," she says, "with all attention focused on Iraq."

If you are voting for Kerry, keep your wits about you in the coming weeks.

DO NOT be a useful fool for Republican dirty tricks.

Here's one of the ways the game is played by Rove and his merry tricksters:

http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/000119.html

DIRTY TRICKS MONTH:
REPUBLICANS HAVE NOT LEARNED THEIR FLYER LESSON

WHAT IS IT WITH THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN THE SOUTH and disgusting political flyers and mailers?

A nasty flyer has turned up in Tennesse politics which depicts a handicapped athlete running on a track with George Bush's face pasted on.

http://www.traditionalvalues.org/images/BushOlympics.JPG

The text reads:

"Voting for Bush is Like Running in the Special Olympics -- Even if You Win, You're Still Retarded."

The Traditional Values Coalition and other right-wing operations in the South jumped on this fast, alleging that Tennessee Democrat Craig Fitzhugh's office, which shares space with the Kerry/Edwards Campaign, was distributing this flyer.

I have just spoken to Fitzhugh's office -- and here are the facts so far.

First, the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Randy Button, and Craig Fitzhugh have denied that these flyers were produced and/or distributed by Fitzhugh's or the campaign office.

Remember when the equally nasty RNC mailer emerged in West Virginia and Arkansas?

It took more than a week for Ed Gillespie and the RNC, which originally disavowed knowledge of the mailer, to own up that the "ban the Bible" mailer was an RNC product. In this case, the denial from the Dems is immediate and firm.

Fitzhugh's office reported to me that they have asked the District Attorney's office to investigate and looks at this flyer and the attempt to pin it on Fitzhugh as a disgusting -- but more importantly -- an illegal act.

What has been reported is that these flyers were left in a trash can in Fitzhugh's office. No one on Fitzhugh's staff or among campaign volunteers saw that these flyers had been deposited by anyone in the gar

(concluded)

Fitzhugh's office reported to me that they have asked the District Attorney's office to investigate and looks at this flyer and the attempt to pin it on Fitzhugh as a disgusting -- but more importantly -- an illegal act.

What has been reported is that these flyers were left in a trash can in Fitzhugh's office. No one on Fitzhugh's staff or among campaign volunteers saw that these flyers had been deposited by anyone in the garbage.

Shortly after some unknown individual dropped the flyers in the trash can, another individual came into the office and found the flyers in Fitzhugh's trash -- and then made this public.

Coincidence? I think not. I hope the D.A. goes after these culprits and nails them hard.

This appears to be a classic dirty trick.

But when the dust clears on this one -- despite the efforts of Fox News and the Traditional Values Coalition to try to keep this mailer linked to Democrats -- the RNC has to not only live with its admission of producing and distributing a duplicitous, homophobic mailer but that it has produced a culture in its party where this kind of political prank seems to be becoming a norm.

How does the Electoral College work?

Each state is given the same number of electors in the Electoral College as the total of its US senators (always two) and its members of the House of Representatives, which are determined by the size of the state's population.

There are 538 electors in the College with numbers per state ranging from three to 55. In all but two states, Maine and Nebraska, the College works on a winner-takes-all basis. The winner of the popular vote in a state gets all the Electoral College votes in that state.

To become president, a candidate needs 270 Electoral College votes. The winning candidate does not need to win the national popular vote.

4-Star Plans After Abu Ghraib
By John Hendren, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon plans to promote Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, former head of military operations in Iraq, risking a confrontation with members of Congress because of the prisoner abuses that occurred during his tenure.

Senior Pentagon officials, including Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have privately told colleagues they are determined to pin a fourth star on Sanchez, two senior defense officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said this week.

Rumsfeld and others recognize that Sanchez remains politically "radioactive," in the words of a third senior defense official, and would wait until after the Nov. 2 presidential election and investigations of the Abu Ghraib scandal have faded before putting his name forward.

Any human being would be depressed to see this. . . . This is the worst day of my life. . . . I have to protect the people closest to me. If I have to suffer, that's the way it has to be."

GEORGE BUSH'S REPUBLICAN PARTY â?” NOT JUST THEIR SURROGATES â?” DESTROYS VOTER REGISTRATIONS OF DEMOCRATS IN BATTLEGROUND STATE

George Knapp, Investigative Reporter
Voter Fraud Allegations Headed to Court
(Oct. 14) -- Another eyewitness has come forward with allegations of improprieties in voter registration. This witness says she worked directly for the Republican party.
Unlike the allegations leveled earlier this week by another former field registrar, this source, Patricia Parker, does not claim to have seen registration forms torn up or tossed away. But she says she and others were told to do exactly that by their Republican employers.
"The person I went out with each day, her and I talked about it. Why throw them away? Why can't we just register them?" asked Patricia Parker.
She says she worked for less than two weeks as a voter registrar for the state Republican Party. She and others walked neighborhoods to sign up voters, but only Republican voters. She says her supervisors at the party, two women named Monica and Drea, told the employees what they should do with any registrations they received from Democrats.
"Just do whatever you want to with it. Dispose of it or bring it back here and we will dispose of it," Parker said.
Parker says she never did it and never saw it done but knows that Democratic forms were returned to the office. She says she wasn't a disgruntled employee but did feel guilty about what she was doing.
A state party official told Eyewitness News that the charges are outright lies. He acknowledged there was a door-to-door registration campaign and that Monica and Drea do work for the party but said there is no way anyone would issue instructions to destroy valid registrations, even from Democrats.
Parker's allegations mirror those leveled earlier by Eric Russell who worked for a company called Voters Outreach of America, funded by the national Republican Party. Russell says he witnessed the destruction of voter registration forms by his supervisor at Voters Outreach, a woman named Jeannie Morgan.
Voters Outreach closed up shop and left Las Vegas last week, but reached by phone, Morgan b

Rove Testifies in CIA Leak Investigation

by Curt Anderson
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, testified Friday before a federal grand jury trying to determine who leaked the name of an undercover CIA officer.

Rove spent more than two hours testifying before the panel, according to an administration official who spoke only on condition of anonymity because such proceedings are secret.

Before testifying, Rove was interviewed at least once by investigators probing the leak. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell also have been interviewed, though none has appeared before the grand jury.

[snip]

In a widely quoted remark, Wilson said after a speech in 2003 that it might be "fun to see Karl Rove frog-marched out of the White House in handcuffs." Wilson has accused Rove of spreading word of the Novak column to reporters.

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's campaign was quick to pounce on news of Rove's appearance, with senior adviser Joe Lockhart issuing a statement calling on Rove and other aides to "come clean about their role in this insidious act."

"If the president sincerely wanted to get to the bottom of this potential crime, he'd stop the White House foot-dragging and fully cooperate with this investigation," Lockhart said.

Barry Scott of Maynards, with two of the Orca sculptures he auctioned off at last night's fundraiser at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver.

Thirty-two of Vancouver's ornate street Orcas are now swimming in an ocean of tax deduction.

The leaping sculptures that dotted the urban landscape until earlier this month were auctioned off last night at a charity gala at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver.

Organizers of the auction were hoping to see $100,000 raised for Lions Society of B.C. Easter Seal Operations and Canucks for Kids Fund -- the evening ended up with the charities' purses $258,250 heavier.

The orcas began to pop up on city streets and in office building lobbies in November of last year.

More than 50 local artists -- including Tiko Kerr and Ross Penhall -- were commissioned to lend their talents to the orca calf fibreglass shells designed by Judson Beaumont. The "Orca in the City" project was modelled after similar initiatives, including Toronto's "Moose in the City" and Saskatoon's "Pigs in the City."

Stewart flayed them wide open. Mostly Carlson, who tried to stupidly turn the tables on a guy who runs a comedy show and makes no pretense at upholding the political integrity.

Forget how Stewart phrased it, but something like: "Well, you know, it's a pretty sad day when CNN and other cable networks are looking to Comedy Central as their guide to integrity."

Stewart also said this kind of behavior is killing us. Called the show bad for democracy. It was a great moment.

Will be on Atrios, and others soon, likely.

It was classic and has been needed to be said in a public way for a loooong time now.

Integrity.

The word defies simplicity. Many times it was said to me, integrity means not only truth, but the will of not just words alone.

We can say a lot about telling the truth. We might remind those of us, whom are younger either of age or heart, that George Washington would never tell a lie.

But I think what Senator Kerry mentions, is the honesty in one's self, as much as one's work. The actions by which we resolve our undertaking, not only reflect upon those around us, but most intimately those who raised us. The things by which we are...and the people we can say taught us.

I certainly can say prove to me my discourse, but can can I say to my fellow Americans life is but led outside God's Rule?

Then even if, I asked my mankind's humanity to not cherish His words, then would I be a coward? Nor would this false idolatry, be not shepherd of the flock before thieving wolves in a night?

I can only be who I was...when I was born into this skin. The skull reminds us, we are all bones beneath. We are all the same. But shame before my creed, is not an apology, it is Law. It is Truth. It is Integrity. It is Honesty.

It is the Sword Which Commeth Out of His Mouth. And the righteousness and will to not surrender my prayer for strength.

So it is in this I have no mercy for Republicans. It is in this I will crush your stock market, if my debt is the cup which runneth over.

But do not ask me for mercy. Do not ask me to forgive you.

Because I will have no quarter, and expect none. I have seen the day break over me from a stillness of night, and it was good.

Can you say the same from the other side of the world?

U.S. Probes if GIs Refused Iraq Mission

45 minutes ago Middle East - AP

A whole unit refusing to go on a mission in a war zone would be a significant breach of military discipline. A statement from the military's press center in Baghdad called the incident "isolated."

"The investigating team is currently in Tallil taking statements and interviewing those involved. This is an isolated incident and it is far too early in the investigation to speculate as to what happened, why it happened or any action that might be taken," the coalition press information center said in the statement, sent to The Associated Press in Washington.

In the statement, U.S. military officials said the commanding general of the 13th Corps Support Command had appointed his deputy commander to investigate the incident.

The statement did not confirm several aspects of the relatives' stories, including the number of soldiers involved and the reason t

Insurance Probe Rattles Stocks

13 minutes ago Business - Reuters
By Aleksandrs Rozens and Joseph Giannone

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An investigation into U.S. insurers and brokers rattled insurance industry stocks for a second day on Friday as investors, shaken further by subpoenas delivered to the top U.S. life insurer, struggled to gauge how deep the probe might reach.

Marsh & McLennan Cos. (NYSE:MMC - news), the world's biggest insurance broker, said on Friday it would suspend a controversial practice that is at the heart of the case.

Marsh was sued by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer on Thursday for steering unsuspecting clients to certain insurers in exchange for lucrative payoffs.

Under the practice, known as market services agreements or contingent commissions, insurers pay brokers to steer business their way. Though the practice is not illegal when disclosed, Spitzer charged Marsh with collecting the payments by rigging bids and fixing prices that inflated costs for clients.

Marsh's move to end the practice did little to help its shares, which plunged an additional 16 percent on Friday after losing nearly a quarter of their market value, or some $6 billion, on Thursday.

Point of fact, it is a myth that Washington never told. He did many times. He also had an affair with a female British agent while he was President. What he didn't do was become a King. It was offered him and he turned it down. He was one of my favorite Presidents and a truly great man for a dope smoking, slave owning, bed jumping aristocrat from Virginia. But it goes all across the board in this country....American films are 95 percent crap, music 90 percent crap, TV 97 percent crap, radio (except for AAR) 95 percent crap. The list goes on and on, it's fucking depressing.

Everyting will go up because of Oil prices, and when we can least afford it. People without jobs, lower paying jobs, increase in health care, trade deficits, fake terrorism with an increase in the cost of Homeland Security, budget cuts for the poor, schools and education.

We need a huge protest of the corps. Huge. Jim was right.

5/31/99
GARDEN GROVE, California (CNN) -- Billy Barty, the 3-foot-10 actor whose career has spanned seven decades, was injured Friday in a scooter accident during a performance at the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival.
Barty, 74, apparently crashed the scooter on an outdoor stage, sending him headfirst onto a concrete set of stairs. Festival director Ken Slimmer said Barty fractured his eye socket, but officials at the Western Regional Medical Center in Santa Ana, where the actor was treated, refused to comment on his injuries or condition.
Festival spokesman Jerry Margolin said he spoke with Barty from his hospital bed Saturday and the actor told him he was feeling better and hoped to be released soon.
Barty, who first appeared in his first Hollywood feature in 1927 at age 3, has starred in movies like "Willow," "Under the Rainbow" and "Foul Play."

Review Finds More Bush Military Records

7 minutes ago White House - AP

By MATT KELLEY, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Weeks after Texas National Guard officials signed an oath swearing they had turned over all of President Bush (news - web sites)'s military records, independent examiners found more than two dozen pages of previously unreleased documents about Bush.

The two retired Army lawyers went through Texas files under an agreement between the Texas Guard and The Associated Press, which sued to gain access to the files. The 31 pages of documents turned over to AP Thursday night include orders for high-altitude training in 1972, less than three months before Bush abruptly quit flying as a fighter pilot.

The discovery is the latest in a series of embarrassments for Pentagon (news - web sites) and Texas National Guard officials who have repeatedly said they found and released all of Bush's Vietnam-era military files, only to belatedly discover more records. Those discoveries — nearly 100 pages, including Bush's pay records and flight logs — have been the result of freedom of information lawsuits filed in federal and Texas courts by AP.

HARRISBURG, Pa. Oct. 15, 2004 — Prosecutors dropped the charges Friday against six men arrested for protesting the Abu Ghraib prison-abuse scandal by stripping down to their thong underwear and forming a human pyramid during a visit by President Bush.

Lancaster County District Attorney Donald R. Totaro said prosecutors would not have been able to prove the defendants' actions served "no legitimate purpose" a requirement under the state's disorderly conduct law.

"The mere presence of unwilling viewers does not determine whether unwelcome views are prohibited from public forums," he said.

He said that pressing charges "would only serve to advance the agenda of six protesters through a very public forum."

FDA Orders Strong Antidepressant Warnings
What Happened in Kerry's Vietnam Battles?
Injured Iraq Vets Come Home to Poverty
American Civil Liberties Union attorney Paula Knudsen, who represented one of the defendants, said: "We're pleased that the charges have been withdrawn and that the district attorney recognized the importance of the First Amendment values at stake."

The men, ages 18 to 32, were arrested along the motorcade route during a July 9 visit by Bush to an elementary school in Amish country, about an hour west of Philadelphia. They were recreating an image from photos taken inside the prison near Baghdad in which Iraqi prisoners were abused by U.S. captors.

Knudsen said East Lampeter Township Police violated the defendants' constitutional right to free speech.

If convicted, the men could have received up to 90 days in jail and a $300 fine.

Q: Is human nature basically violent?
A: Yes it is. Because thought is violent. Anything that is born out of thought is destructive. You may cover it up with all wonderful and romantic phrases: "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Don't forget that in the name of "Love thy neighbor as thyself" millions and millions of people have died, more than in all the recent wars put together. But we now have come to a point where we can realize that violence is not the answer, that it is not the way to solve human problems. So, terror seems to be the only way. I am not talking of terrorists blowing up churches, temples, and all that kind of thing, but the terror that if you try to destroy your neighbor you will possibly destroy yourself. That realization has to come down to the level of the common man.As I said before, what kind of a human being do you want on this globe? The human being modelled after the perfect being has totally failed. The model has not touched anything there. Your value system is the one that is responsible for the human malady, the human tragedy, forcing everybody to fit into that model. So, what do we do? You cannot do anything by destroying the value system, because you replace one value system with another. Even those who rebelled against religion, like those in the Communist countries, have themselves created another kind of value system. So, revolution does not mean the end of anything. It is only a revaluation of our value system. So, that needs another revolution, and so on and so on. There is no way. -- A Man Called U.G.

Some thoughts on Kerry's deflection of criticism regarding 1) the Cheney/lesbian flap, and 2) the 'liberal' rap:

How about this? Kerry, in effect, says the following: that his identification of Mary Cheney as a lesbian can only be considered 'cheap and tawdry' if one's views of lesbianism are such...

KERRY: "If I identified Mary Cheney as being left-handed would anybody accuse me of being cheap and tawdry? If I identified Mary Cheney as being a brunette would anybody accuse me of being cheap and tawdry? No. Why not? Because these qualities are assigned to us by Nature. And so it is, as is my belief, that one's sexual orientation is assigned to us by Nature. There ought not to be any shame or stigma attached to being born left-handed, or brunette, or red-headed, or freckled, or dark-skinned, or fair-complexioned, or seven-foot-two, or four-foot-three, or brown-eyed or blue. And by that same standard neither should there be any shame, any stigma attached to being gay. You are as God created you and you're magnificent! And so long as you lead a good, honest, decent life, treat people with respect, do good works, perform acts of kindness towards your fellow man, you should be proud of who you are, what you stand for and what you've achieved, and the world, likewise, should be proud of who you are, and accept and embrace you for who you are. I mentioned Mary Cheney the other night to make a point: that lesbianism and sexual orientation cuts across party lines. That's a fact. It's a hard one, I know, for some people on the Right side of the political aisle to accept, but you know in Christopher Columbus's day nobody but a few wanted to accept that the world was round...and Copernicus the astronomer, back in his day, was dismissed as a kook for suggesting the Earth revolved around the Sun. Old prejudices die hard, but they do die...eventually. There was nothing cheap nor tawdry about my bringing up Mary Cheney in the debate the other night, because there's nothing cheap or tawdry about her sexual orientation, or for that matter about Nature, period. I don't have a problem accepting Mary Cheney for who she is and for what God, in his infinite wisdom, made her. And if I

Anger as such is something you don't know. You are all the time controlling, suppressing, living with or choicelessly aware--you are all the time doing something with what is not there any more. It is already gone. It is the thinking that results in hitting somebody--your child, for example--and not the anger. You are attributing it to something that is not there any longer. That has set in motion this nonsensical movement of thought. So it is not the anger but the frustration that is your problem. You are not dealing with desire. Desire is life. If you destroy desire you are destroying life. It is there--not must be there--whether you like it or not. Have you freed yourself from desire? Don't say `good desires', `bad desires', `spiritual desires' and `material desires'. They are all the same. What you are going to do with the desires is all that you are interested in." -- U.G.

"Attachment becomes a problem because of our wanting to be detached. What is wrong with attachment? Permanence: we cannot hold onto attachments forever. Knowing that, one gets onto the merry-go-round of detachment. All this looks very attractive to you because you feel that you now have the mantra which will help you cope with the aches and pains attachment brings you. Then you get attached to the concept of detachment and spend a lifetime trying to make the goal of being detached into a reality," -- U.G.

Nightline Demolishes Anti-Kerry Swift Boat Story

ABC News Nightline went to Vietnam and interviewed villagers who witnessed the firefight in February 1969 that led to John Kerry being awarded a Silver Star. The incident is a center piece of the allegations made by the so-called 'Swift Boat Veterans for Truth', whose leader John O'Neill has claimed that there was no firefight and that Kerry shot dead a fleeing teenager. Nightline's detailed interviews with the villagers, including former Viet Cong fighters who took part in the incident, verified Kerry's account of events. When confronted by Nightline's Ted Koppel, a clearly rattled O'Neill refused to address the content of the report.

OOPS! I got cut off. Okay, I know it runs a little long, but here's the rest of it...

KERRY: ...And if I don't question God's wisdom and God's acceptance and unfailing love with regards to one of His children, neither then should Lynne Cheney with regards to one of hers."

Boom!

As to the 'liberal' label the Republicans and Bush keep hitting Kerry with, could somebody (you, perhaps...?) grab John Kerry either figuratively or literally by the lapels, shake him violently, and scream at him, "YOU'RE A LIBERAL, AND THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!!!!

I am so fucking sick and tired of this guy turning tail and running away from being a quote unquote Liberal! He has allowed the other side to define the term and saddle him with it as though the terms 'liberal' and 'serial rapist' were one and the same. If Kerry doesn't--between now and November 2nd--get up on a stage somewhere and deliver a barn-burning speech in defense of liberalism and identify point-for-point, example after example, all the good it's done for this country and its citizens, the lava dome forming on Mt. Saint Helens right now isn't the only thing that's going to explode...I WILL! But way worse than my sanity shooting geysers of white hot magma into the atmosphere, Kerry will lose this election. Ask any nutbag who's going to vote for Bush this election why they don't want or trust Kerry to be their President and the same two answers keep coming back: he's a Liberal, he's a flip-flopper. They just repeat what the smear machine has drilled into their brains and told them was baaaaaad...'Liberal' / 'flip-flopper.' Those two idiotic criticisms should have been dispelled and annihilated by the Kerry campaign long ago...and would have been if the campaign had anyone with anywhere near the political talent and savvy as Karl Rove.

By its own admission the Bush campaign says it's going to hammer away at the liberal issue for the remaining days until the election. Kerry has got to take that head-on. Two suggestions: 1) your book, Al, Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot... has some terrific examples on pages 10 and 11 of how Government has enriched our lives, as offered up by prom

Lockhart Statement on Rove Testifying in CIA Leak Case

In response to reports that Karl Rove testified before the grand jury investigating the CIA leak case, Kerry-Edwards campaign Senior Adviser Joe Lockhart issued the following statement:

“With two weeks to go before the election, the American people are still in the dark about how it is that their White House leaked the name of an undercover CIA operative to the press, jeopardizing the life of this agent and possibly violating federal law.

“Instead of hiding behind the lawyers he so often likes to criticize, George Bush should direct Karl Rove and anyone else involved to go to the White House briefing room and come clean about their role in this insidious act. If the president sincerely wanted to get to the bottom of this potential crime, he’d stop the White House foot dragging and fully cooperate with this investigation.

Top Bush Lies and Distortions From the Third Debate
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#3. BUSH CLAIMS: “We have a problem with litigation in the United States of America. Vaccine manufacturers are worried about getting sued, and therefore they have backed off from providing this kind of vaccine.
REALITY:
Mergers, Not Lawsuits, To Blame for Lack of Vaccine Producing Companies. “Also, Bush blamed lawsuits for the shortage, but that's not the cause of frequent vaccine shortages, according to the Institute of Medicine, a division of the National Academy of Sciences. The problem is that vaccines aren't profitable and drug companies keep merging. In 1967, nearly 30 drug companies made vaccines. That was down to five last year, and of those only two make flu vaccines. [Pioneer Press, 10/14/04]
How about this for "gut-check time": When you close your eyes, can you see the Democrats defending America? Because I can't see it.
These are the people who are obsessed with getting the French to like us. They call terrorism a "nuisance," like prostitution and other petty crimes. ("Hundreds of Children Killed in Chechnya by Nuisance," "British Civilian Beheaded by Annoyance," "9-11: What a Hassle!") They babble about nonexistent civil liberties violations under the Patriot Act.
If Gore had been elected president, right now he would just be finding that last lesbian quadriplegic for the Special Forces team.
Better yet, let's use a Kerry speech to torture them into revealing where and when their next attack will be! Ten minutes of that snoozefest convention speech would have the most hardened Islamic fanatic begging for mercy and spilling his guts. Now, that's my idea of a "gut check."
As if it means something, Kerry keeps vowing: "I will never stop at anything to hunt down and kill the terrorists." But he will stop at the Iraqi border. Or if the French and Germans aren't on board. Or we don't have United Nations approval. Or it would require investigating a Muslim under the Patriot Act.
#4. BUSH CLAIMS: “Most of the tax cuts went to low and middle income Americans, and now the tax code is more fair, 20 percent of the upper income people pay about 80 percent of the taxes in America today because of how we structured the tax cuts.”
REALITY:
In 2004, Top One Percent Will Receive Average Tax Cut Of $35,000; Middle Class Will Receive Average Tax Cut Of $647. The benefits of Bush’s tax cuts primarily benefit the rich. The top one percent of households will receive tax cuts averaging almost $35,000--or 54 times more than middle-class families. Households with incomes above $1 million will receive tax cuts averaging about $123,600. [Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 4/14/04]
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) opened a four-point lead on Democratic Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) the day after the final debate between the White House rivals, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Friday.
Bush led Kerry 48-44 percent in the latest three-day tracking poll, which included one night of polling done after Wednesday's debate in Tempe, Arizona. Bush led Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, by only one point, 46-45 percent, the previous day.
By LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - Teresa Heinz Kerry made nearly $2.3 million in 2003 and had a federal and state tax bill of close to $800,000, according to tax forms filed Friday.
Heinz Kerry, who has an estimated worth of about $750 million, will receive a refund of just under $248,000 for overpaying her federal taxes and is applying that to her 2004 filing.
NOW, THE DIRTY TRICKS BEGIN in EARNEST
Why "set-up"?
Clearly, what was supposed to happen was that one operative was going to come into the campaign office and leave the flyers on a table full of other campaign materials, so that a *second* operative could come in, "find" the documents, and start raising a fuss.
But Fitzhugh's quick-witted and observant volunteer, Kate Honey, spotted the materials and had them thrown away.
So then the second operative comes by, expecting to find the materials there, and starts complaining about them -- *before* realizing that they've already been thrown away. As a backup, he goes out and retrieves them from the trash.
Instantly, Dave Dahl's campaign, local Republicans, conservative bloggers (including Drudge), and the local and national branches of the Traditional Values Coalition are posting the flyer online and making noise about how awful it is.
You'll note that, as this began happening, neither local GOP officials nor the TVC could identify who it was who had found the flyers. TVC says he was "out of town" and promises to get a name and number back to the press real soon.
Then we have this update, which came out over the AP wire today. You'll see that, by yesterday, the TVC had decided that a local guy named James Mitchell could pin the flier on the Fitzhugh campaign. So the Associated Press calls Mitchell, and this is the result:
The other reason this W.-as-Special Olympian is obviously baloney?
Think about the phrasing of the flyer ("Voting for Bush is Like Running in the Special Olympics -- Even if You Win, You're Still Retarded.").
Who on earth is it supposed to convince?
People who were planning to vote for Bush but, on reflection, decide they won't want anyone thinking they're a retard? Please.
The *point* of the flyer is to enrage and motivate Bush supporters, while dismaying and demotivating Fitzhugh's (Dem) supporters and also making it hard for him to win ticket-splitters.
Everything about this stinks to high heaven.
