Bush Leads Kerry With 52 Percent in Washington Post-ABC Poll

Sept. 9 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush leads Democratic challenger John Kerry 52 percent to 43 percent in a national poll of likely voters taken by the Washington Post and ABC News.

Among registered voters, Bush holds a 50 percent to 44 percent over Kerry, a four-term senator from Massachusetts. The survey was conducted September 6-8 among 1,202 adults 18 or older, including 952 self-identified registered votes. The margin of error was plus or minus three percentage points.

Bush surges clear of Kerry

From correspondents in Washington

10sep04

US PRESIDENT George W. Bush has pulled nine points ahead of his Democratic rival John Kerry, a Washington Post-ABC News poll said today, confirming a trend observed after the Republican National Convention earlier this month.

Asked whom they planned to vote for in the November 2 US presidential election, 52 per cent of those most likely to vote named Bush, while 43 per cent named Kerry. Among all registered voters, the poll said, Bush's lead was 50-44 per cent.
The Washington Post said it was the first time this year in a Post-ABC poll that Bush got support of the majority of probable voters.

Forgery feeding frenzy: Media falling afoul of the facts

In an effort to obscure overwhelming evidence that President George W. Bush failed to fulfill his duty in the Air National Guard, conservatives have initiated the claim-now echoed widely by the media-that memos revealed by CBS News' 60 Minutes on September 8-and purportedly written by one of Bush's commanders in 1972 and 1973-are fake. The memos, if authentic, provide additional evidence that Bush was given preferential treatment and ignored a direct order. The case for their authenticity is strong.

Forgery evidence dubious

On Sept. 9, Conservative media sources including L. Brent Bozell III's Cybercast News Service, Internet gossip Matt Drudge, The Weekly Standard's Stephen F. Hayes and FOX News Channel's Special Report with Brit Hume followed right-wing bloggers in detailing evidence to support the claim that the documents were forged. On Sept. 10, The Washington Post, ABC News, and The New York Times outlined elements of the documents that raised questions about their authenticity.

But these questions do not withstand scrutiny; there is solid evidence to support the authenticity of the documents, and reporters have often failed to note plausible explanations for the apparent anomalies. For example, Salon.com's Eric Boehlert noted in a Sept. 10 article that a close examination of the documents reveals characteristics not found in word processing documents. Marty Heldt, an independent researcher Boehlert cited, "notes that when [Lieutenant Colonel Jerry B.] Killian's [alleged author of the documents] Aug. 14, 1973, memo is enlarged and the word 'interference' is examined, it's clear the two middle e's rest higher on the page than the other two e's; that is not something a modern-day word processor would likely do."

50 days to go, 10 points behind, Kerry struggles for second wind

Julian Borger with Democrats on the campaign trail in Ohio, Iowa and Missouri

Saturday September 11, 2004
The Guardian

With 50 days left in his presidential campaign and nearly 10 points behind in the polls, John Kerry found himself this week in a familiar situation: surrounded by people willing him on, but who were having trouble understanding what he had to say.
The venue was the cavernous semi-dome of Cincinnati's art deco railway terminal, now a stunning museum, but a problematic place to hold a rally. Senator Kerry's voice echoed like a forlorn platform announcement, and determined local supporters like John Figurel struggled to hear what he was saying.

"I want him to get tougher," Mr Figurel said, conceding that if Mr Kerry had been tougher in the speech, he had missed it.

That has been Mr Kerry's problem all along.

After all the months on the road, many Americans are unclear about what he stands for, partly thanks to the efforts of the White House, which spent much of last week's Republican convention in New York lampooning him as a "flip-flopper".

The charge has been hard to scrape off, because it contains a large fragment of truth.

Bush leading Kerry in battleground states

Washington, DC, Sep. 10 (UPI) -- President Bush's New York convention gave him a political first in this campaign: a majority of probable voters saying they plan to vote for him.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll released Friday found among those most likely to vote in November, Bush holds a lead of 52 percent to 43 percent over Kerry, with independent Ralph Nader getting 2 percent of the hypothetical vote.

Among all registered voters, Bush leads Kerry 50 percent to 44 percent.

In 19 closely contested states Bush holds a narrower lead among likely voters, 50 percent to 46 percent, the poll found.

Mounting Deaths in Iraq Have Not Resulted in Major Backlash in Public Opinion

By John F. Harris and Thomas E. Ricks
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, September 10, 2004; Page A10

This spring, when mounting casualties and a prison scandal were causing public support for President Bush's Iraq policies to plunge, his campaign strategists were confidently predicting that Iraq problems would present no major threat to his reelection once U.S. forces turned over authority to an interim government in Baghdad.

In the months since, the evidence so far has proven that prediction more right than wrong.

You all are so full of it. After Kerry got no bounce out of the DNC, you said it was because there were no undecided voters left. Now that the president is holding a clear lead over Kerry (8-11 points), you have no explanation.

Bush is going to carry a minimum of 90% of the GOP vote. Kerry is only polling in the 70s of the Democratic vote. Where are the other Dems going to go? They are voting for the president, like their fellow Dem, Zell Miller.

Kerry is back in the race, says latest poll
Analysis of swing states gives challenger small lead

Julian Borger in Washington
Wed. Sept. 8, 2004

The Guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,1299385,00.html

Forecasts of John Kerry's political demise may have been exaggerated in recent days, and he could still be clinging to a narrow lead in the US presidential race, according to a poll published yesterday.
The poll, by Zogby International, reflected the state of play in 20 swing states, and found that the surge in George Bush's support there after last week's Republican convention, was less pronounced than the double-digits suggested in two weekend polls.

Those surveys, in Time and Newsweek, triggered alarm and finger-pointing in the Democratic camp, and a reshuffle in the Kerry team. But other surveys have since suggested the Bush convention "bounce" was much smaller and the contest remains a close one.

The Zogby poll says the president has made up ground in many of the 20 battleground states, but Mr Kerry retains a slim lead in most of them - enough to give him a majority in the electoral college, if the vote was held now.

First, the President leads John kerry 52%-43% among likely voters. And the underlying numbers are incredible.

CBS STANDS BY BUSH-GUARD MEMOS
CBS News / Associated Press
September 10, 2004

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/06/politics/main641481.shtml

NEW YORK - Questions have been raised about the authenticity of newly
unearthed memos acquired by CBS News that say President Bush's National
Guard commander believed Mr. Bush was shirking his duties.

The network is defending the authenticity of the memos, which were obtained
by CBS News' "60 Minutes," saying experts who examined the memos concluded
they were authentic documents produced by Mr. Bush's former commander, Lt.
Col. Jerry Killian.

In a statement, CBS News said it stands by its story.

"This report was not based solely on recovered documents, but rather on a
preponderance of evidence, including documents that were provided by
unimpeachable sources, interviews with former Texas National Guard officials
and individuals who worked closely back in the early 1970s with Colonel
Jerry Killian and were well acquainted with his procedures, his character
and his thinking," the statement read.

"In addition, the documents are backed up not only by independent
handwriting and forensic document experts but by sources familiar with their
content," the statement continued. "Contrary to some rumors, no internal
investigation is underway at CBS News nor is one planned."

CBS News Anchor Dan Rather says many of those raising questions about the
documents have focused on something called superscript, a key that
automatically types a raised "th."

Critics claim typewriters didn't have that ability in the 1970s. But some
models did. In fact, other Bush military records already released by the
White House itself show the same superscript including one from 1968.

Some analysts outside CBS say they believe the typeface on these memos is
New Times Roman, which they claim was not available in the 1970s.

But the owner of the company that distributes this typing style says it h

Homosexuality goes against the Bible. Oh, wait! I doubt any of you have heard of that good book!

Posted by: Rob Greenbaum
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Rob,

Can you please point to chapter and verse on this for me, because I am not learned in this aspect of the teachings of Christ.

Of course, just so you know, I practice a form of Christianity that focuses exclusively on Jesus' teachings.

To me, it is much more straight-forward to follow the teachings of Jesus, simple as they are, rather than to pick and choose among verses in the Old and New Testaments, merely as a transparent technique to justify one's preconceptions and prejudices.

Truthfully, if you must rely on the Old Testament to "prove" that homosexuality is "immoral", for the sake of consistency I do recommend that you follow all the laws of the Old Testament; e.g., you must fix tassles with blue cords on all your garments to follow the law of God (Numbers 15:38).

Seriously, Rob, can you tell me where Jesus condemns homosexuality, please?

The president is going to get a bounce out of the 9/11 anniversary. People will reflect on the president's strong leadership on that day and be reminded of what made them fall in love with him in the first place.

This election is all about LEADERSHIP, NOT issues. Kerry has no chance!

There is no way to spin this as anything but incredible news for John Kerry and horrible news for fascists.

Morton Kondracke: Bush and Kerry tied again
By MORTON KONDRACKE, Newspaper Enterprise Association
September 10, 2004

http://www.naplesnews.com/npdn/pe_columnists/article/0,2071,NPDN_14960_3171389,00.html

President Bush may have gotten a "bump" in support during the GOP convention, but it's already dissipated. Once again, he's tied with Democrat John Kerry.

That's the evidence emerging from daily tracks by the Rasmussen poll. And focus groups in 17 battleground states conducted by Democratic consultant Bob Beckel also suggest that Bush failed to decisively convert undecided voters.

Polling 1,000 voters a night, Rasmussen found that Bush went into the Republican convention with a one-point lead, 47 percent to 46 percent, and came out Sept. 4 with a lead of 4.4 points, 49.1 percent to 44.7 percent.

By Sept. 7, however, the race had slipped back to 47-47. That's a more accurate measure of the race than the average of four other current polls that give Bush a six-point lead.

Also suggesting a tie is the fact that the Gallup poll, while showing Bush leading by seven points among likely voters, also found Bush leading by just one among registered voters.

Many experts expect that the prospect of a big turnout this year makes the registered-voter figure the more accurate predictor.

"The president is going to get a bounce out of the 9/11 anniversary."

Yep, gonna get6 a bounce alright... right out of office and into a prison.

An NYC firefighter is coming forward this weekend to reveal that three of the four black box recorders from Sept. 11th were found. The administration has repeatedly lied about that, and now it's going to be public knowledge.

When Bush goes to prison, we're going to start rounding all his child molesting kiddie porn ring buddies (like you, frank) and put you in a pit.

Now explain to us why you hate children, Jesus, and AMerica, and why you're using a jewish name when you're obviously just another neonazi. Oh, wait, that's self-explanatory, nevermind.

Posted by: he who has JIK'd you yet again at September 10, 2004 10:28 PM

The way you all hate this president reminds me of how people hated Lincoln in his day. They called him a baboon, the way you all call this president a "chimp".

Someday, this president will be thought of as one of the greatest leaders we have ever had. He will, in the words of Mayor Giuliani, be seen as "America's Churchill."

Kerry Slips Behind Bush in 3 `Battleground' States (Update1)

Sept. 10 (Bloomberg)

-- Democratic nominee John Kerry lost ground to President George W. Bush in Ohio, Missouri and Arizona this week, according to polls in three of the 17 to 20 states both campaigns say will decide the November election.

The three states together account for 41 of the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the election. Polls conducted for USA Today/Cable News Network and the Arizona Republic show Bush with leads in all three of at least 9 percentage points, all outside of the margins of error.

Posted by: Rob Greenbaum
++++++++++++++++++++++++

If this, truly, is your justification, Rob, I suggest again, as I have above, that you fix tassels with blue cords to your garments, since this is the Law of God in the Old Testament.

However, if your WERE a Christian - which I suspect you arre not - you surely would be familiar with the teachings of Jesus.

For instance, as to the Old Testament Laws, Jesus teaches us:

"The law and the prophets were until John [the Baptist]: since that time the kingdom of heaven is preached."
-- Luke 16:16

"Ye are not under the law, but under grace."
-- Romans 6:14

"Ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ .... We are delivered from the law, that being dead."
-- Romans 7:4, 6

"But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law."
-- Galatians 5:18

"Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances."
-- Ephesians 2:15

Therefore, as Jesus never condemned anyone for homosexuality, and Jesus relieved us from the trivia of the Old Laws, I really do feel that those so-called "Chrisitans" who spread hate against homosexual human-beings ... you know, I just feel so sad and so truly sorry for you.

All this nonsense about torturing children is whiny effeminite foolishness. What does it matter if some children are anally raped, if it makes Americans feel safer, and makes the President happy? You people need to grow up and be manly like me and the President! :)

The president is going to get a bounce out of the 9/11 anniversary, just as soon as someone reminds him of what happened that day. People will reflect on the president's strong leadership on that day and be reminded of what made me fall in love with him in the first place: the crazed look of a gay SS commander in his eyes that say to me, time to ride the big white pony.

This election is all about LEADERSHIP, NOT issues. And besides, I'm sorry but John doesn't have nearly the rock-hard butt and left forearm of Dubya. In my labido, Kerry has no chance!

If you don't believe me, go to your local Wal-Mart (they're never short of short people hwo like to shop wearing plaid and house slippers) and ask around. People will tell you how much they love the president (and how much they love Wal-Mart too, even though the .25 they are saving on toothpaste is helping to close the businesses in the area). :)

As head of the administration's terrorism task force, Gore was in charge after the 1993 WTC bombing. They caught the guys, brought them back to the US, presecuted them and put them in jail where they remain today.

They thwarted the millenium plot, the holland tunnel plot, and two airline plots and others.

Perhaps President Kerry should put Gore in charge of Homeland Security?

I NEVER said that Jesus condemned homosexuality. It is in the bible, however. In the Old Testament, it is said that a man is not to lie down with another man.

Ahhhh, yes, gimme some of that old-time religion, right, Rob?

Consider: On her radio show recently, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance.

The following response is my open letter to Dr. Laura.

---------
Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can.

When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. ... End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Law and how to follow them.

1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. The passage clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomin

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot.

Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your adoring fan,

Rob Greenbaum

I bet you almost never get laid, huh.

above all, BE CAREFUL. If you begin to act as if you regard the beauty of women as something of actual merit beyond sex appeal, you can start believing it, and that might make you a better person.... people will notice, and people HATE when others have abilities and powers beyond their own.

Chlamydia the Tatooed Lady

My life was wrapped around the circus.
Her name was Chlamydia .
I met her at the world's fair in 1900,
marked down from 1940.

Ah, Chlamydia .
She was the most glorious creature
Under the su-un.
Guiess. DuBarry. Garbo.
Rolled into one.

Oooooooh
Chlamydia Chlamydia , say have you met Chlamydia ,
Chlamydia , the Tatooed Lady.
She has eyes that folks adore so,
And a torso even more so.

Chlamydia, chlamydia , that encyclopidia,
Oh Chlamydia the Queen of Tatoo.
On her back is the Battle of Waterloo.
Beside it the wreck of the Hesperus, too.
And proudly above waves the Red, White, and Blue,
You can learn a lot from Chlamydia .

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

When her robe is unfurled, she will show you the world,
If you step up and tell her where.
For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paris,
Or Washington crossing the Delaware.

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Chlamydia oh chlamydia , say have you met Chlamydia ,
Chlamydia the Tatooed Lady
When her muscles start relaxin',
Up the hill comes Andrew Jackson

Chlamydia ,Chlamydia , that encyclopidia,
oh Chlamydia the queen of them all!
For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz,
With a view of Niagara that nobody has.
And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz.
You can learn a lot from Chlamydia .

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Come along and see Buff'lo Bill with his lasso.
Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso.
Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon.
Here's Godiva but with her pajamas on.

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Here is Grover Whalen unveilin' the Trilon.
Over on the West Coast we have Treaure Island.
Here's Najinsky a-doin' the rhumba.
Here's her social security numba.

Chlamydia the Tatooed Lady --
(con't)

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Come along and see Buff'lo Bill with his lasso.
Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso.
Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon.
Here's Godiva but with her pajamas on.

La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Here is Grover Whalen unveilin' the Trilon.
Over on the West Coast we have Treaure Island.
Here's Najinsky a-doin' the rhumba.
Here's her social security numba.

{whistles}La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la

Chlamydia , oh Chlamydia that encyclopidia,
Chlamydia the champ of them all.
She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet.
The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat.
And now the old boy's in command of the fleet,
For he went and married Chlamydia .

I said Chlamydia
{He said Chlamydia }
They said said Chlamydia
{We said Chlamydia }
La La!

Who knew Americans still liked losers and failures like George Bush. While the rest of the world hates Bush he is still tied more or less with Kerry in the polls.
Why do Americans like such losers like Bush who couldn't get a job without his family and friends' connections. Sad to see a once mighty and repsected nation being led by a less than literate pansy daddy's boy who fails at everything his hand touches.

Americans are losers themselves to vote for this sad sack of a loser in George Bush.

ok, LOOK, dumbass(es)

WHEN you leer, do NOT slit your eyes and grin with teeth! OPEN your eyes WIDE, look amazed and suprised, and instead of panting, SIGH... not like you're in pain, but WHISTFULLY. And put a hand on your chest. Not like both hands clasped, make it look like a natural and unrehearsed motion, as if you're not aware of it.

GOT IT?

and use the reverse smile, if you know how. Don't grin like a hungry predator.

I think this is right, Miss Anne. Moreover, I think people are afraid of the truth today, because it is so horrific. A blue dress, an illicit (albeit consensual) romance? All can imagine betrayal by the one we love: so it is easy to attach our abhorence to such behavior.

But - to swallow up the constitution, to destroy our democracy, to take measures that bring our whole world closer to destruction? To believe such things are taking place is to acknowledge how sick we have allowed this nation to become. The truth is so terrifying, many prefer to hide behind the sweetness of lies.

The surreal world of Bush
HAROON SIDDIQUI

Politicians don't always deliver what they promise. But George W. Bush is in a league all his own. He says one thing, does another and often manages the exact opposite of what he intends.

While politicians play up what suits them and downplay what doesn't, he is unique in shutting out reality altogether. He won't see what he doesn't want to see, even if others do.

Also, while politicians learn on the job and go from the stupid to the sensible, he seems to travel in the opposite direction.

He said post-9/11 that he was going to isolate terrorists but ended up isolating America.

He attacked Afghanistan to crush Al Qaeda but spawned its branches or, worse, copycat outfits all over the world.

He invaded Iraq to capture non-existent weapons of mass destruction, while his other two axis of evil nations, North Korea and Iran, were the ones developing nuclear weapons.

He talked tough on Iran but it was North Korea that got busy and made two nuclear bombs.

He saw his war on Iraq as a warning to other states not to develop lethal weapons but finds his credibility so eroded he can't convince others about the seriousness of Iran's nuclear intentions.

Pleasure Secrets
Soft porn: a celebration of a God-given gift?

Have conservative Christians typically got it wrong?

A thought-provoking re-evaluation of an often misunderstood subject

Stripping himself of self-righteousness, blind traditionalism, legalism and pressure to conform, a conservative Bible believer risks controversy as he seeks a fresh look at God’s attitude to erotica.

Sex . . . pleasure . . . beauty . . . the human body. They were all created by the God of the Bible, who pronounced everything he made to be very good. We came into this world naked. Adam and Eve, in the perfection of their purity frolicked nude in Eden. What Bible-believer, focusing solely on the facts, could object to erotic pics and videos of lovemaking? Isn’t it the innocent enjoyment of a God-given gift?

change the word to "flurt" and it takes on a whole new feel.

and, it was my wonderful advice, in case you need to know who to grouse at.

I'm making Oblio Chicken right now.

Insert two fingers under the skin of a chicken thigh; spread fingers, maing a pocket under the skin, but keep the entry small. Stuff with shredded coconut. Rub half a scored clove of garlic into each piece; squeeze a quarter lime over each piece, then rub with a pinch of cayenne pepper, and sprinkle on a little black pepper. Flip chicken, and sprinkle bottom of each piece with a little garlic powder and cayenne, and more lime juice. Roast for about 50 minutes at 350, until skin is crispy. Spuds cut to 1 inch rounds in the bottom of the pan also turn out nicely.

Ellsberg Urges Insiders to Leak Iraq Info

Thursday September 9, 2004 9:01 PM

By KATA KERTESZ

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Daniel Ellsberg, the former Defense Department official who leaked the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam war, is urging government insiders to provide similar classified documents about the invasion of Iraq.

Joined by other whistle-blowers and former government employees, Ellsberg said at a news conference Thursday that claims of government deception and lies have ``little credibility'' unless supported by documentary evidence, which often is available only in classified materials.

In a memo to current government employees, Ellsberg and other former government officials said federal insiders owe a ``higher allegiance'' to the Constitution, the public and American soldiers in Iraq than to their government bosses.

``A hundred forty-thousand Americans are risking their lives every day in Iraq for dubious purpose,'' the memo said. ``Our country has urgent need of comparable moral courage from its public officials. Truth-telling is a patriotic and effective way to serve the nation. The time for speaking out is now.''

Lyrics to "Happy Trails" by Dale Evans Rogers
Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin' until then.
Who cares about the clouds when we're together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.
Happy trails to you, 'till we meet again.

Some trails are happy ones,
Others are blue.
It's the way you ride the trail that counts,
Here's a happy one for you.

Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin' until then.
Who cares about the clouds when we're together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.

Happy trails to you, 'till we meet again.

"thumper"

hey, pointman

1) DR made reference to using the old testament for some pretty stupid shit...by quoting it.

2) I (lamely) attempted to snark DR by referring to an episode of "The West Wing" where Pres. Josiah Bartlet used some of the same riffs of the old testament in dealing with a repuke correspondent.

3) I stated I used some of the same riffs on a some [bible] "thumpers" in my locale noting that they usually confuse said thumpers; much to glee & delight!

4) DR didn't "get" my post and (mercifully) laughed it off.

5) N had my six with his "[bible] thumper" post further confusing the entire fucking blog!

6) I should just shut the fuck up & stop trying to be so snarky.

OK?

*thx N!....snark*

The comment stemmed from the wonderfully crass, chauvinistic, neanderthal, sexist, dick-in-the-dirt joke that you told. It is a 'guy' joke through-and-through.
No offense was intended. The comment was intended to illustrate the lumber-yard humor.

Shocking and awful" is the way many people view the current situation in Iraq and the United States. The war continues to takes its toll on Iraqi civilians, international aid workers, journalists and U.S. troops. Here at home we are seeing how waging a "perpetual war" is affecting our own lives as well.

Chubby Love

Ooh chubby love, my chubby love
I need you, oh how I need you
But all you do is treat me bad
Break my heart and leave me sad
Tell me, what did I do wrong
To make you stay away so long

'Cause chubby love, my chubby love
Been missing ya, miss kissing ya
Instead of breaking up
Let's do some kissing and making up
Don't throw our love away
In my arms why don't you stay
Need ya, need ya
Chubby love, ooh, chubby love

Chubby love, my chubby love
Why must we seperate, my love
All of my whole life through
I never loved no one but you
Why you do me like you do
I get this need

Ooh, ooh, need to hold you
Once again, my love
Feel your warm embrace, my love
Don't throw our love away

Please don't do me this way
Not happy like I used to be
Loneliness has got the best of me
My love, my chubby love

I need you, oh how I need you
Why you do me like you do
After I've been true to you
So deep in love with you

Chubby, chubby, ooh 'til it's hurtin' me
'Til it's hurtin' me
Ooh, chubby love
Don't throw our love away
Don't throw our love away

The more you give, the more you get.
The more you laugh, the less you fret.

The more of everything you share.
The more you'll always have to share
The more you love, the more you'll find
That life is good and friends are kind...
For only what we give away,
Enriches us from day to day.

NAJAF, Iraq -- Peace has failed to bring reconciliation in Najaf, a city considered significant to Shi'ite Muslims and where self-declared holy warriors battled U.S. forces last month.

Each day, hundreds of residents turn out to shout down rebel Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. They blame him for leaving Najaf in ruins and blame his henchmen for slaying as many as 300 people.

"Muqtada is garbage and his people are all crooks," demonstrators chanted Friday. That's an extraordinary slur for a man who is the son of an assassinated spiritual leader and merits the honorific, Sayyed, as a descendant of the prophet Muhammad.

This kind of outburst was unthinkable three weeks ago, when al-Sadr and his armed followers ruled Najaf and its holy shrine and led a nationwide insurgency against the U.S. occupation. He flouted centuries-old tradition to defy the key spiritual leaders of Iraq's Shi'ite majority. He drove them into seclusion and their followers into fearful silence.

Now, the besieged have turned the tables, raising questions about how deep and broad al-Sadr's support actually is. Al-Sadr posters and pictures tacked up around the city streets and neighborhood shops have been torn down. The police, whom al-Sadr's fighters drove from their Najaf and neighboring Kufa compounds last spring, have now packed their jail cells with the cleric's followers.

"Al-Sadr's hold on Najaf? It's over for good," said one police major who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The venomous backlash by the city's merchants, policemen and the wealthy, who suffered most under al-Sadr's five-month rule, has rattled the cleric's top advisers, who are hunkered in his office within earshot of the protests. They blame Najaf's governor and police for orchestrating the demonstrations and using officers dressed in street clothes to rally the crowd.

The cleric and his entourage also have been cut off from the city

Shiite firebrand searching for a role after losses in Najaf

HAMZA HENDAWI, Associated Press Writer

(09-09) 07:25 PDT NAJAF, Iraq (AP) --

The erosion of some of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's status showed recently when his supporters gathered outside his office here. They chanted a prayer for their leader but showed none of the zeal that marked similar rituals just weeks ago.

Two weeks ago, al-Sadr's militia agreed to stop fighting U.S. and Iraqi forces and turned over control of the Imam Ali shrine, Najaf's most sacred mosque, to aides of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's top Shiite cleric.

Since then, the mood among al-Sadr's followers has become somber. Gone is the swagger of the men loathed and feared by many people here for bringing death and destruction to one of Islam's holiest cities.

On Thursday, Iraqi security forces dealt another blow to al-Sadr's prestige when a 60-strong force searched his office in Najaf looking for weapons. Al-Sadr was not in the office at the time and no weapons were found there, Iraqi officials said.

The youthful cleric and his movement are pondering their future in an Iraq where powerful figures in the majority Shiite community would like to see them marginalized. They see their actions, like taking up arms against the Americans, to be dividing the Shiite community when it should stand united less than five months ahead of a key general election expected to give them the political power they had been denied for years by a Sunni Arab minority.

Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, a U.S.-backed secularist Shiite, is insisting that al-Sadr disband his al-Mahdi Army.

Having faced down al-Sadr in Najaf, U.S. commanders have turned their attention to his base in Baghdad's Sadr City, a teeming Shiite slum which is the cleric's main power base.

Last week, a senior U.S. Army officer in charge of security in Baghdad said American troops must restore control of Sadr City before al-Sadr has a chance to rebuild his militia there.

I just watched CNN's Peter Bergen's interview with Usama bin Laden.
It has been too quiet from him. Leads me to believe he is planning something else against us.
Unlike others, I don't believe anything will happen before the elections. Maybe minor things, but I think he is waiting to see who will win the election.

If Bush happens to get in again, there will definately be something huge. If Kerry wins the election, I think bin Laden will give him time to see what this Presidency will do. If the troops are pulled out of Iraq, He may wait and see if other things are changing. If not, I think he will attack no matter who is in office.

He wants us out of the Arabian Peninsula, especially out of Saudi Arabia and the Holy places. He also brought up Isreal and groups Isreal and the United States together, so I am sure he would look for changes there as well.

My thoughts.

Evidently typewriters themselves did not exist in the 60's, 70's. The cavemen of the time used rocks and low gutteral sounds to communicate, ergo: the memos are an obviously fraudulent attempt to depant the reigning commander in chimp.

This does not surprise me at all. It is a terrible program that serves only the Drug Co's bottom line.

Few Apply for Medicare Drug Coverage

Sat Sep 11,12:18 AM ET

By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Far from the expected deluge, relatively few patients with cancer and other serious illnesses have applied for generous early Medicare prescription drug coverage.

The Bush administration was planning a lottery to determine who would get the 50,000 slots included in last year's Medicare prescription drug law. Instead, just 6,364 people have applied for the head start on drug insurance for costly cancer medicines taken orally and self-injectable drugs for multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.

The Medicare Web site now advises: "There are still many enrollment slots available!"

Patient advocates and physicians blame the low enrollment on several problems: The government scared off some people by using the term lottery and hasn't publicized the program enough. In addition, it came up with an intimidating application for people with debilitating, life-threatening illnesses.

Complaints about complexity also have been raised regarding the Medicare discount drug card program, where enrollment also has fallen short of expectations.

This is what I have to contend with. Don't have the money to pay for this drug.

The administration had expected tens of thousands of people like 81-year-old Helen Curtis to step forward when it unveiled the new program in June. While many cancer drugs administered in doctors' offices already are covered under Medicare, costly newer oral medicines and most drugs for other illnesses are not.

Curtis had been spending $560 for each shot of Abbott Laboratories' Humira that she injects herself with every two weeks to relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis — a cost that would reach $14,560 for a full year.

Since her coverage began Sept. 1, Curtis said she will pay $1,200 for the medicine for the rest of the year, amounting to less than $150 per injection.

Unusual for someone her age, Curtis is an avid computer user and read about the program online. "I told my doctor about it and even took extra forms for other patients," she said in a telephone interview from her home in Scarsdale, N.Y.

"The sad thing is, people didn't know about it," she said.

In Search Of Friends Among The Foes
U.S. Hopes to Work With Diverse Group

When U.S. immigration officers in New York City whisked away Ishaq Farhan as he stepped off an incoming international flight in May 2000, his Jordanian diplomatic passport was no help to him. Federal agents questioned him for hours before barring his entry into the country. Then they made him pay for the flight back to Jordan.

The U.S. Embassy in Jordan lost no time making amends to Farhan, a leading opposition politician who has been closely affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, a worldwide movement opposed to Western influences. A State Department official visited his home, issued him an immediate visa and passed on the United States' "deep regret for the difficulties Dr. Farhan experienced."

The episode demonstrates the U.S. government's dilemma. Some federal agents worry that the Muslim Brotherhood has dangerous links to terrorism. But some U.S. diplomats and intelligence officials believe its influence offers an opportunity for political engagement that could help isolate violent jihadists.

Kerry Criticizes Drug Plan
Hiding Bill's Costs Broke Law, He Says
By Paul Farhi
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, September 11, 2004; Page A06

ALLENTOWN, Pa., Sept. 10 -- John F. Kerry, touting his health care proposals for a second day, charged Friday that the Bush administration "broke the law" by failing to disclose to Congress that its prescription drug plan would cost $100 billion more than its original estimate.

The Democratic nominee spent the day expressing his support for an extension of a federal ban on assault weapons and talking about rising health care costs, in a shift away from his focus earlier this week on the war in Iraq. Kerry is hoping that domestic issues, particularly the rising cost of health insurance, will help sway undecided voters, blunting President Bush's advantage in leading the war on terrorism.

The four-term senator said here and in a morning event in St. Louis -- both in the heart of crucial swing states -- that White House officials violated the law when they pressured an auditor not to disclose his estimates of the cost of the Medicare prescription drug program passed by Congress late last year.

For most of my friends, joining the grandparent 'hood is one of those turning points in life when you are again projected into the future. Yet politicians deal with the new generation of grandparents as if all we cared about were Social Security, prescription drugs and Medicare. As if the only time we think about our legacy is when we make out a will.

The GrannyVoter project grew out of the meetings of a small group of women of a certain age who got together to do some soul-searching and thinking about the next stage of life. I've been part of the group, which includes anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson, writer Nancy Berkley, higher-ed consultant Rita Bornstein, former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, foundation president Ruth Massinga, psychotherapist Rosemary Masters, author Patricia O'Brien, historian Nell Painter, writer Letty Cottin Pogrebin and former representative Patricia Schroeder.

For Barry Zellman, whose brother Kenneth died in the World Trade Center attacks, the day has become an annual pilgrimage.

"I will always go to the place where my brother took his last breath," said Zellman, who lives in New Jersey. "It's a sacred burial ground for me. It keeps me connected to him. Sometimes it feels like America has gone past that day in so many ways, but for me there's no question of being anywhere else on September 11."

Firefighters in New York will hold a number of events to honor the 343 active and three retired firefighters who died in the attack, including a memorial Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral.

"It's a reminder of what we went through and what we will have to deal with for the rest of our lives," said Rudy Sanfilippo, a firefighters union official.

9/11 happened to all of us. Maybe not as extremely
as the victims and their families, but to our psyche.

May the victims of 9/11 all rest in peace.

Ineffective Iraqi Force in Fallouja Disbanded
The move is a setback to Marines, who hoped the brigade would quell the insurgency in the city.

RAMADI, Iraq — The Iraqi military force formed by the Marines in a last-ditch effort to pacify the restive city of Fallouja has been disbanded in the face of continuing violence, assaults on government security forces and evidence that some members have been working openly with insurgents.

The dissolution of the Fallouja Brigade, created during the spring to avoid an all-out assault on the insurgent hotbed, marked a significant setback for the U.S. military. The Americans had hoped that the brigade, composed of former members of the Iraqi army and Saddam Hussein's special security forces, would work alongside the new Iraqi government and help restore order.

Rumsfeld Says Terror Outweighs Jail Abuse

Associated Press
Saturday, September 11, 2004; Page A04

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, responding to allegations that he fostered a climate that led to the prisoner-abuse scandal, said yesterday that the military's mistreatment of detainees was not as bad as what terrorists have done.

"Does it rank up there with chopping someone's head off on television?" he asked. "It doesn't."

Rumsfeld acknowledged once again that he had approved harsher interrogation methods for suspects captured in the global war on terrorism but said the rules were meant only for the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, facility for terrorist suspects and had nothing to do with Iraq, where the prison scandal emerged.

Afghans Mark 9/11 Anniversary with Mixed Feelings
40 minutes ago
By David Brunnstrom

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan (Reuters) - U.S. forces and their allies in Afghanistan (news - web sites) remembered the third anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in somber fashion Saturday, conscious that the war on terror will be a long one.

It is more than a year since Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on a visit to Afghanistan that U.S. forces had moved from major combat to stabilization and reconstruction.

>snip

Afghans marked the anniversary with mixed emotions -- some glad of the U.S.-led intervention that toppled the Taliban after Sept 11, but others deeply suspicious of Washington's intentions.

Three years on, the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), alleged mastermind of the world's worst act of terror, are still unknown and his al Qaeda group and Taliban guerrillas taunt the United States from the rugged Afghan interior.

Our great success at welfare reform,
a close look. Warning: it's a long piece!

excerpt:

"Jose's motives were more complex. Among the five Milwaukee agencies running W-2 (including the YWCA and Goodwill Industries), Maximus was the only national, for-profit company--a welfare agency that traded on the New York Stock Exchange! By allowing states to privatize their programs, the 1996 law set off a gold rush among such firms; one Wall Street analyst saw more than $2 billion a year up for grabs. Formidable rivals like EDS and Lockheed Martin, the aerospace giant, were fighting for the business, but with a longer record and tighter focus, Maximus was thought to have an edge. The W-2 contract was a coup. No welfare program was followed more closely, and Maximus hoped to leverage the publicity into market share nationwide. The company went public on the eve of W-2's launch, and the stake of the founder, David Mastran, soared to more than $100 million.

But behind the scenes, the Maximus program was soon in disarray. W-2 was built on the theory of "full engagement": 40 hours of weekly activity, of which 30 would involve actual work. Yet many clients waited months for assignments. Others ignored their assignments and got paid anyway. Six months after the program's start, Steve Perales, the second in charge, warned that "virtually no referrals are being made to the CSJ unit," the one that assigns community service jobs. While 1,100 clients were supposed to have assignments, just 507 had gotten them, and "only about 88 are actually participating." That is, in the country's most famous work program, only 8 percent of the clients were working. "What they were doing, I don't know," George Leutermann, the head of the program, later told me. "They were doing nothing.""

WASHINGTON - A federal prosecutor is investigating whether two reporters for The New York Times were leaked information about a terror financing investigation that may have tipped off the targets of the probe.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald of Chicago last week notified the newspaper in a letter that he intended to subpoena the telephone records of reporters Philip Shenon and Judith Miller.

An attorney for The Times, Floyd Abrams, confirmed receipt of the letter and said he was negotiating with Fitzgerald in hopes of preventing the telephone company records from being subpoenaed. He said neither The Times nor its reporters have received subpoenas.

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AFP) - A car blew up in front of a bank in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah on the third anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States, security sources said.

At least one person, reportedly one of the bombers, was wounded in the blast in front of the headquarters of the Saudi American Bank in the commercial capital's northern Al-Bawady district.

"Four men arrived by car, got out and then the car exploded, injuring one of the men, who was arrested, while the other three fled" to the Al-Rueis district, some four kilometres (2.5 miles) away, a security source said.

The men then barricaded themselves inside a building some 700 metres from the US consulate. The building has now been surrounded by police, according to the same source.

Al-Arabiya satellite news channel reported that the blast happened at 9 am (0600 GMT), with one of its reporters adding that a stolen car had been used in the attack.

The blast came as Saudi officials maintained that ties between the kingdom and the United States had emerged stronger from the shock of the attacks in New York and Washington, despite the fact that the suicide hijackings had shaken traditionally close relations.

Fifteen of the 19 presumed suicide hijackers were Saudi.

N Korea to pursue nuke programs: report
SEOUL AP 2004-Sep-11

North Korea said on Saturday that South Korea's secret nuclear experiments involving uranium and plutonium make the communist state more determined to pursue its own nuclear programs, a news report said.

A spokesman for North Korea's Foreign Ministry condemned the South Korean nuclear experiments, conducted in 1982 and 2000, as "clearly of military nature," according to Pyongyang's official news agency KCNA, monitored by South Korea's national news agency Yonhap.

The recent revelations of those experiments will affect the prospects for six-nation talks aimed at persuading North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons programs, the unnamed North Korean spokesman was quoted as saying.

"We strongly suspect that the United States may have masterminded the experiments that were clearly of military nature," he was quoted as saying. "We cannot but link these developments with the issue of holding six-party talks."

South Korea said on Thursday that it extracted a tiny amount of plutonium, a key element for making atomic bombs, in a nuclear experiment in 1982. That revelation followed an acknowledgment last week that it enriched a small amount of uranium - another element that could be used to make a bomb - in 2000.

The controversy over South Korea's experiments has threatened to further disrupt troubled efforts to persuade North Korea to dismantle its suspected nuclear weapons programs.

"Under these circumstances, it is only natural that we should never give up our nuclear program," the North Korean spokesman said.

Ever heard of Eddie Slovik, George?

It is clear from the evidence that President Bush dishonored his solemn oath to serve and protect our country in accordance with the US Constitution. He also disgraced the US military uniform. President Bush must therefore answer to the American people for his conduct, but most importantly he must answer to all those who have served our country honorably and most specially those who are now sacrificing and putting their lives at risk in his illegal and unnecessary war!

By all indications from all the information he has made available and that others have revealed, George W. Bush did fail to report to his post and to serve at his appointed place of duty at the time prescribed for an unusually long period of time and he did thereby dishonor his Constitutional oath as a commissioned officer of the US Armed Forces, thereby also dishonoring his military obligations -- during a time of war!

To the best of my knowledge, no other politician or political leader in the history of our country has ever had such a disgraceful foreign policy and military record! We are the most hated country in the world and Americans are the most hated people in the world and Bush is the most hated leader in the world, even more than Saddam Hussein!

The author then qualifies himself - no hippie commie peacenik liberal, he!

Bush actions skewered stock market

By David R. Breuhan / Special to The Detroit News

Rarely has a president made the same mistake twice. But the Bush administration has managed to hurt the stock market, once on its own and a second time with the help of the Republican-led Congress. It may explain why George W. Bush has a needlessly more difficult re-election battle.

The stock market is often considered an indicator of future economic activity. If the stock market rises, investors believe that corporate earnings will increase. If it stagnates or decreases, it indicates that investors believe future earnings will be lower.

NAACP Blocks Paige Invitation to Speak

CLEVELAND - The state NAACP has withdrawn a convention speaking invitation to U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige at the request of the group's national office.

Paige, who was invited three weeks ago to discuss education reforms, was cut from the weekend program at the request of the national office, Ohio NAACP President Sybil Edwards-McNabb said Thursday.

The state meeting of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (news - web sites) opened Friday in Cleveland.

Edwards-McNabb said national NAACP leaders told her there was an "imbalance" in her slate of convention speakers. She said she had invited President Bush (news - web sites) and the Democratic nominee for president, Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites).

Fiscal Conservatives Challenge Bush

Fri Sep 10, 3:25 PM ET
By Adam Entous

CONSERVATIVES SKEPTICAL

But even fiscal conservatives, traditionally allied with the Republican White House, were skeptical of Bush's plans.

"While it's true that Kerry hasn't provided a detailed plan, neither has the president," said Heritage Foundation budget analyst Brian Riedl.

William Niskanen, chairman of the Cato Institute, said Bush's warnings about Kerry's spending plans were "inconsistent" with his own proposals. "There's no way to accomplish (Bush's) major new measures, including tax reform, without substantial increases in spending," Niskanen said.

Stephen Moore of the Club for Growth, a group that raises money for conservative political candidates, said Bush was not being "very forthright" about his plans. He called Bush's fiscal record "abysmal," adding that under both Bush and Kerry "fiscal responsibility takes the back seat."

This week congressional analysts warned the deficit will balloon to a cumulative $2.29 trillion over the next decade.

How Many Deaths Will It Take?
By BOB HERBERT

It was Vietnam all over again - the heartbreaking head shots captioned with good old American names:

Jose Casanova, Donald J. Cline Jr., Sheldon R. Hawk Eagle, Alyssa R. Peterson.

Eventually there'll be a fine memorial to honor the young Americans whose lives were sacrificed for no good reason in Iraq. Yesterday, under the headline "The Roster of the Dead," The New York Times ran photos of the first thousand or so who were killed.

They were sent off by a president who ran and hid when he was a young man and his country was at war. They fought bravely and died honorably. But as in Vietnam, no amount of valor or heroism can conceal the fact that they were sent off under false pretenses to fight a war that is unwinnable.

How many thousands more will have to die before we acknowledge that President Bush's obsession with Iraq and Saddam Hussein has been a catastrophe for the United States?

'Intelligence Matters' Connecting Bush to 9-11

Senator Bob Graham's new book, "Intelligence Matters" is a political tsunami. Along with many unexplored allegations concerning both 9-11 and the war in Afghanistan, Graham creates an important link between the Bush Administration and the attacks of Sept. 11.

This connection corroborates the suspicions of many Americans who have studied 9-11 and believe that the administration may have facilitated the attacks by suppressing FBI investigations of terrorist activity in the US.

Al Sharpton Speaks At Convention's Opening

CLEVELAND -- The NAACP's 74th Annual State Convention kicked off Friday in Cleveland, reported NewsChannel5's Lorna Barrett.

The Rev. Al Sharpton was the featured speaker as the convention opened, but another scheduled speaker, whose invitation was retracted, found another podium.

U.S. education secretary Rod Paige appeared at Friday morning at Cleveland's Lousia May Alcott School. He was supposed to discuss President George W. Bush's No Child Left Behind program at the civil rights group's convention, until the NAACP withdrew the invitation.

You might get scratched.

Scandal impresario Kitty Kelley is suggesting that CNN's Larry King won't let her on his show to promote her upcoming book, "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty," because he's a toady of the Bush family.

"I realize how important the Bushes are to Larry," Kelley E-mailed me. "He does not want to lose their friendship or offend them in any way. And having me on his show would probably anger the family, because they made their feelings clear from the beginning ... when the former President Bush called my publisher [Doubleday] and said he did not want this book written and would not cooperate in any way. So I certainly understand Larry's refusal to book me."

Wondering how the polls are giving a big Bush lead?
Here is one busted for push polling, as reported at the electoral vote tracking site, www.electoral-vote.com. The Bush dirty tricks are out early this year, and it is very important that people opposed to the current administration take as many as possible to the polls with them on Nov. 2. (I saw on C-Span yesterday a man predicting a 58% turnout, and this is very good for Kerry.)

Here is the push poll story:

I was afraid this was going to happen sooner or later and it has now happened. I have to make a judgement call on a firm that engages in push polling. In case you haven't followed this issue, push polling is where the pollster (on instructions from the client) asks a very slanted question in order to elicit the desired answer so the pollster can announce how well the client is doing. Questions like "Do you support John Kerry even though he lied about getting medals in Vietnam?" or "Do you support George Bush even though he deserted the National Guard during war time?" fall in this category. Legitimate pollsters would never ask such questions. Instead they might ask "Do you believe John Kerry earned his medals in Vietnam?" or "Do you believe George Bush fulfilled his duties in the National Guard?". Those are questions designed to determine public opinion, not create it.

Why does this come up now? Moore Information (R) just released a poll showing Bush 9% ahead in Iowa, a state he has never led in before and which the current poll (taken 5 days before Moore's poll) puts Bush 4% behind. On its own merits, this is implausible, but in the absence of other evidence, I would accept it, as I accepted Gallup's poll showing Bush 14% ahead in Missouri (even though I don't believe it for a second) due to Gallup's reputation. Even Gallup can make a mistake, but they are not dishonest. With Moore Information, the situation is different. Moore was recently caught doing push polling, as reported in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. It is ok for a pollster to work for one side or the other as long as they do honest polls (Scott Rasmussen is a Republican but I have no reason to question his numbers, for example). But Moore has crossed the

14 Governors Receive Mail That's Rigged With Matches
By FOX BUTTERFIELD

Published: September 11, 2004

OSTON, Sept. 10 - Envelopes containing matches that were rigged to ignite when opened have been received through the mail at the offices of at least 14 state governors in the last two days.

The mailings, under investigation by the F.B.I. and the Department of Homeland Security, bear a return address that names two inmates at a maximum-security prison in Nevada. But a Nevada corrections official said it was unclear whether they were the actual senders.

Judge declares Rowell winner by a single vote

Decision sparks heated outbursts at courthouse

Citronelle's District 3 residents have a new councilman after a judge on Friday declared that challenger William "Bobby" Rowell, in fact, defeated incumbent Michael Waltman last month by exactly one vote.

The unofficial results of the vote count at the close of the Aug. 24 election indicated Waltman had won by two votes.

Waltman and Rowell then went to the mat after Rowell challenged the ef ficacy of the election. Both sides ultimately began challenging ballots allegedly cast by people who did not live in District 3.

Elementary Logic

A lot of brainpower is currently occupied researching Vietnam-era typewriters, studying the finer points of font spacing, and experimenting with ways to produce duplicates of the Killian memos on various mechanical and electronic platforms, in order to determine if, indeed, these memos are the genuine article, or a modern forgery.

Who knew that forensic typography could be so boring?

Let me save everyone a whole lot of time. They are genuine. How do I know? Because the internet is currently awash in wingnuts claiming the memos are fakes. Ergo, they are for real. Q.E.D.

Some people may feel that I'm just being flip here. Is that so, some people?

Tell me: how rich would you be right now if, every time something was posted on a right-wing message board, or everytime Drudge had an exclusive, or any time Rush Limbaugh revealed a secret truth that the liberal media won't tell you, you called up your bookie and put down $20 even money on "bullshit"?

The correct answer is: "pretty fucking rich".

The correct answer is: "I would never, never lose."

So, if anyone doubts my methodology, I have a crisp new $20 bill that just told me that I'm 100% right and you're just too dumb to see it.

If any of you champs out there think me and Andrew Jackson are both wrong, well then, today's your lucky day, because we're paying 2:1. If you need us, we'll be on the couch playing ESPN NHL 2K5.

Peace.

[UPDATE: I don't mean to suggest that debating this issue is unnecessary; merely that it is unecessary if you are only interested in determining whether the memos are forgeries, and that detailed explorations of the subtleties of "kerning" (or whatever) are THE MOST BORING EVAR.

Of course, someone needs to go out and play duelling talking points with these people in order to win the fight for public opinion, and, in order to do this, you need to be an expert on kerning.

Most people - those with inferior pattern-recognition abilities - still require tiresome arguments of this sort

It is definitely sensible to guess that America would try what it can to reassure Pakistan that they are much more than “allies of convenience”.

September 11 and Its Aftermath

...

The attack on the World Trade Center was exactly analogous to Pearl Harbor. The Japanese generals had to neutralize the US fleet so that they could sweep into Southeast Asia and appropriate Indonesian petroleum. The US was going to cut off imperial Japan from petroleum, and without fuel the Japanese could not maintain their empire in China and Korea. So they pushed the US out of the way and took an alternative source of petroleum away from the Dutch (which then ruled what later became Indonesia).

Likewise, al-Qaeda was attempting to push the United States out of the Middle East so that Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Saudi Arabia would become more vulnerable to overthrow, lacking a superpower patron. Secondarily, the attack was conceived as revenge on the United States and American Jews for supporting Israel and the severe oppression of the Palestinians. Bin Laden wanted to move the timing of the operation up to spring of 2001 so as to "punish" the Israelis for their actions against the Palestinians in the second Intifadah. Khalid Shaikh Muhammad was mainly driven in planning the attack by his rage at Israel over the Palestinian issue. Another goal is to destroy the US economy, so weakening it that it cannot prevent the emergence of the Islamic superpower.

FIASCO IN FALLUJAH

Remember the decision back in April to withdraw U.S. forces from Fallujah and replace them with an all-Iraqi "Fallujah Protection Army"?

"The Fallujah Brigade is done, over," said Marine Col. Jerry L. Durrant, who oversees the 1st Marine Expeditionary Unit's involvement with Iraqi security forces. "The whole Fallujah Brigade thing was a fiasco. Initially it worked out OK, but it wasn't a good idea for very long."

"....With the demise of the Fallujah Brigade, the Marines are left with no attractive options for rooting out Fallujah's entrenched insurgency, a movement that has spread to surrounding villages and left the interim Iraqi government without control of the nation's largest cities west of Baghdad, the capital.

"Thousands of Marines remain based as close as two miles from Fallujah, but the insurgents -- local and foreign fighters backed by firebrand Sunni Muslim clerics -- have had several months to dig in and make it more difficult for American or Iraqi government forces to launch a ground attack."

AIDS is not a single disease. There have been many definitions since 1978, but the most common problem is severely impaired energy metabolism which has multiple causes but can be classified as toxemia or intoxification. So called HIV is a set of cellular signals, not a replicating virus and doesn't "cause" anything. People die because their defensive cells no longer have the energy to eat, neutralize, etc normally harmless parasites and symbionts which assume a new, aggressive form because of the toximeia. It may be a premature activation of the "death" program in body's cells.
