"Showdown in Najaf: US Logic Hard to Follow "

"The claims and counter-claims make it hard to discern the strategies behind the showdown in Najaf, and the language that is used blurs the situation even more. U.S. military spokesmen, for example, always call the young men who are defending rebel Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr "anti-Iraqi forces," although not one in a hundred of them has ever been outside Iraq."

Reductionism is the philosophy that all psychology reduces to biology, all biology to chemistry, chemistry to physics, and finally physics to mathematical logic. Therefore, according to reductionism, I can understand you by means of logic alone without having a human brain.

"Americans running private 'war on terror' allege cover-up"

"An alleged American bounty hunter on trial for running a private jail, kidnapping and torturing prisoners in Afghanistan accused FBI agents of seizing evidence proving his links to US authorities."

"In front of the judge is the receipt that the FBI signed. Why did the judge allow the FBI to take evidence from the NDS?" Idema said, alleging 500 pages of documents, 200 videotapes and at least 400 photos detailing his links with the agencies had been seized.

"Now it's at the US embassy where noone is ever going to see it."

you know, a bio-chemist with a strong grounding in physics can tell you how you lift your arm
but he can't do it any easier then you can

you think "arm go up", and the arm goes up

"why" is pretty much the same as "how"...

the answer is unfolding, not static

you don't dance to reach a certain spot on the floor,
or play a song just to get to the end, if that were the case, the orchestra that could play the fastest would always be considered the best
---

why?

well, we like to say "death needs time for what it kills to grow in, for ah pook's sweet sake, you stupid, vulgar, greedy, ugly american death-sucker," but it's kind of frightening to think like that
like existential realpolitik..."might makes right"

... its also a stellar day for freedom of press!!!

In Iraq:
1)A uniformed lieutenant then told the assembled journalists and hotel staff: "We are going to open fire on this hotel. I'm going to smash it all, kill you all, and I'm going to put four snipers to target anybody who goes out of the hotel. You have brought it upon yourselves."
http://news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,10478772%5E401,00.html

2) "An Iraqi police officer physically assaulted and threatened to kill a Kansas City Star photojournalist Monday after she took photos of officers beating a suspected pickpocket. Allison Long, 31, on rotation in Iraq for Knight Ridder newspapers, was walking inside a police cordon near the Baghdad Convention Center, where more than 1,000 Iraqi delegates met to pick a national assembly this week. Long and two Iraqi colleagues saw Iraqi policemen, guns drawn, running after a man just before 9 a.m."

If anything, he's the Larry Tate of contemporary politics, a shameless ass-kisser who changes his opinions to flatter those in power, just like Darren Stephen's "bombastic boss" on Bewitched did.

There's something about his demeanor that, to me anyway, suggests his entire adult life has been one never-ending Maalox moment—that he's always choking down a sour stomach.

You can see this from his shifting stance on gay rights. Famously the father of a lesbian, during the 2000 campaign Cheney was a refreshing voice of tolerance within the GOP, saying he had no problems with same-sex relationships.

What's more, he pooh-poohed federal actions like the Defense of Marriage Act, which was signed by President Clinton and sought to limit states' flexibility in sanctioning gay marriage.

These days, after his boss emphatically endorsed a constitutional amendment precluding same-sex marriage, he's singing a very different tune.

That he won't talk about his switch tells you something, too: That he knows he's acting out of cowardice, not principle. + *.* * + *.* .+ .* *..+**.+**++.*..+ .* *..+**.+**++.*.+ *.* .+ .*.*

.*..+**.+**++.*..+ .* .*..You can see it, too, in Cheney's two infamous moments involving foul language.

The first came during a 2000 election stop in Illinois, where George W. Bush pointed to New York Times scribe Adam Clymer from the stage and whispered to Cheney that he was a "major league asshole."

Cheney's widely sampled retort, "big time," is the sort of thing a hanger-on says, the sort of sequel joke that Peter Lawford would utter in the presence of Sinatra. Hardly the language of a man in full.

The same goes for Cheney's more recent—and fulsome—exchange with Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.). "Fuck yourself," the vice president snapped. That's hardly the action of a master machiavellian—it's the brittle rejoinder of a frazzled, heart attack survivor who's barely hanging on—to life, his job, his position, his sense of self-esteem.

In such moments, we sense in full relief the pathetic handmaid's role that Dick Cheney has played his entire adult life.

He is, if not an errand boy sent by grocery clerks, a bag man all the same, covered in flop-sweat; our disgust quickly turns to contempt. We hate him not because he's too powerful, but quite the opposite.

US to move military bases closer to Russian borders

FACT SHEET: MAKING AMERICA MORE SECURE BY TRANSFORMING OUR MILITARY

"Over the coming decade, we will deploy a more agile and more flexible force, which means that more of our troops will be stationed and deployed from here at home. We will move some of our troops and capabilities to new locations, so they can surge quickly to deal with unexpected threats. We'll take advantage of 21st century military technologies to rapidly deploy increased combat power. The new plan will help us fight and win these wars of the 21st century. It will strengthen our alliances around the world, while we build new partnerships to better preserve the peace. It will reduce the stress on our troops and our military families."

Working within the borders is not the same as jurisdiction...

Now you assume that all the agents are bad...they are not...

However...

Who is in charge of the FBI?
Why was the FBI favored in recent reports?
Why is CIA taking the hit?

Who gives the FBI orders?
Why was FBI used and not CIA?

Two possibilities even so...

FBI can go pick up evidence otuside the country if they're investigating a criem that happened within this country...not afghanistan...what crime may they be investigating in connection to the Idema case? ;)

Secondly...if it's not legit...are they even FBI...what are they trying to cover up and for whom...

They have no jurisdiction except when...

Now if it's not legit than this is evidence of illegal activities itself...and we go back to whom gives the orders to the FBI...9hint: he don't like statues that show a little cleavage)

The "Small Brain Theory" Its has 2 parts:
1) There is no super secret technology. There is no group of super genius people working in any bunker.
2) People who want power are intellectually and morally inferior. They are not smarter than the average person ... quite the contrary.

Basically, my observations of:
- people who do high tech stuff
- people with varying degrees of power

... is that people in power have exactly the same tools we do ... they just more freedom to use them unchecked (hence power)

... in corporate america ... the rank of an executive is always directly inverse proportional to intelligence ...

It has to do with the difference between being "smart" or being "intelligent".

Smarts are acquired by a desire to accomplish stuff ... people who are poor and uneducated are often smart, because they need to be in order to survive. Same goes for people in combat situations ... they "get smart"

Intelligence is merely capacity. Computers are wicked intelligent. They can perform lots of operations really quick ... but intelligence implies not goal or for that matter morals.

Executives have neither.

In a letter, prosecutors told the judge in the case that a phrase in a notebook being used as evidence against the mosque leaders might have been mistranslated. U.S. soldiers found the notebook last summer in northern Iraq, in what prosecutors deemed a "terrorist training camp."

An entry in the notebook, prosecutors said, contains the name of one of the suspects, Yassin Muhiddin Aref, 34, and lists his address and phone number in Albany. The entry, in Arabic, refers to him as "commander," according to a Defense Department translation.

However, FBI translators now have a copy of the original entry and disagree with the Defense Department, saying the Kurdish phrase actually means "brother."

Defense attorneys said the translation, if incorrect, undermines the entire government case. They say Aref and the other suspect, Mohammed Mosharref Hossain, 49, should get out on bail at another detention hearing scheduled for Aug. 24.

"It's a travesty," defense lawyer Terence Kindlon said.

Aref, a native of Kurdistan in northern Iraq, came to the United States as a refugee. He has several brothers and nephews still there, Kindlon said. Aref, who has three young children, is imam of the Masjid As-Salam storefront mosque in Albany. He also drove an ambulette before his arrest. Hossain is the founder of the mosque and a landlord and owns a pizzeria. The father of five is a native of Bangladesh and a naturalized U.S. citizen.

"I think when the key piece of information at the detention hearing proves to be false that we should reopen the detention hearing and let my client go back to his wife and children," Kindlon said.

U.S. Attorney Glenn Suddaby disagreed, saying the

Reinventing democracy:

Elections are due soon in the United States, Afghanistan, Iraq and Indonesia. Democracy, the creation of the Greeks, remains the least bad political system. But it has to work properly: it must remain accountable to ordinary people and not suborn power.

Sadr "No one ever explained it to me way before"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Deal Offered to End Najaf Conflict
Iraqi Conference Hears Letter From Sadr
Compiled From Wire Reports
Wednesday, August 18, 2004; 12:15 PM
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi Shi'ite cleric Moqtada Sadr agreed Wednesday to end an uprising in the holy city of Najaf and leave a shrine from where his militia has fought U.S. forces for nearly two weeks, one of his spokesmen said. A delegate at the Iraqi National Conference also read a letter reportedly from Sadr's office in Baghdad saying he will back down and leave the Imam Ali Mosque.
It remains to be seen how an agreement would be implemented and how soon the conflict in the Shiite holy city of Najaf would end.
"Yes, Sayyed Moqtada has agreed to the demands," Sheik Mahmoud al-Sudani, a spokesman for Sadr, told Reuters; although he could not confirm that Sadr had sent a letter to the national conference.
The other demands, conveyed by the delegates were for the radical cleric to disarm his Mehdi Army and join the country's political process.
Earlier, Iraq's defense minister gave the militiamen hours to surrender, warning that troops were preparing for a major assault to "teach them a lesson they will never forget."
Small details fascinate the ladies. There's a small statuette of a death-like figure in Dick Cheney's office that simply fascinates us.
To take a virtual 360 degree tour of the veep's office, go here:
when the image loads, you can zoom and pivot the view. If you turn to the right, past the bookcase, there is a small table against the wall with a small death figure. Zoom in fully by holding down
the magnifying glass and ponder.
There's also a ventilator shaft in the center of the ceiling which makes us chuckle a little, since the White House has given what's basically a nifty tool for any potential terrorist to case Cheney's office. Wheee!
He added that the Sadr movement was ready to take part in the political process “if it is honest”.
“We discussed these points and 10 other points that had been discussed with (National Security Advisor) Muaffaq al-Rubaie, and our efforts were successful. The delegation went back satisfied,” he said.
But the government of Prime Minister Iyad Allawi was “blocking” any peaceful resolution of the crisis, he said.
Dear Catherine,
It's no secret that in the last four years, the Bush administration has eliminated major protections designed to keep Americans safe at home and work.
George Bush is taking away the right to overtime pay from up to 6 million Americans, including nurses, cooks, clerical workers, and nursery school teachers.
George Bush allowed dirty power plants to expand without controlling their emissions.
George Bush endangered pregnant workers when he stopped regulating exposure to the chemicals used in the manufacturing of semiconductors.
George Bush rolled back mercury regulations and proposed to defer controls on toxic mercury emissions by power plants for at least a decade.
George Bush reduced protections for mine workers and eliminated rules to protect workers from tuberculosis.
George Bush gutted health and safety protections in response to pressure from top donors and corporate lobbyists. For example, David Lauriski, head of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, removed protections for coal workers, that he originally sought when he was serving as an executive of a mining company. Chemical industry executives donated more than $1.5 million to Bush's 2000 campaign and were rewarded with looser regulations that boosted corporate profits but put pregnant workers at greater risk.
We need you to get the word out in your community that George Bush sacrifices public safety in favor of corporate profit.
Reporters Get Death Threats from Police
By Stephen Farrell
The Australian
Wednesday 18 August 2004
Iraqi police have threatened to kill every journalist working in the holy city of Najaf, where US forces are locked in a tense stand-off with Moqtada al-Sadr's Mehdi Army.
After a series of veiled warnings to leave on Sunday, two marked police cars pulled up at dusk outside the Sea of Najaf hotel on the outskirts of town, where Arab and Western journalists are staying.
Ten uniformed policemen walked into the hotel and demanded that the al-Arabiya, Reuters and AP correspondents go with them.
Journalists told them they were not there, but the policemen found and arrested Ahmed al-Salahih, the al-Arabiya correspondent, who the day before had been given a special exemption from the earlier eviction orders.
A uniformed lieutenant then told the assembled journalists and hotel staff: "We are going to open fire on this hotel. I'm going to smash it all, kill you all, and I'm going to put four snipers to target anybody who goes out of the hotel. You have brought it upon yourselves."
Move over, Harvard law: Now enrolling for right wingers
If the Bush administration has been frustrated by Democratic lawmakers in its efforts to stack the nation's courts with right-wing judges, Rev. Jerry Falwell hopes to help Bush's cause -- from the other side of the bench. The Chicago Tribune reports that the religious leader is opening a law school this month at his Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., intending to swell the ranks of attorneys who will fight for conservative causes.
"We want to infiltrate the culture with men and women of God who are skilled in the legal profession," Falwell said. "We'll be as far to the right as Harvard is to the left."
The top issues on the legal training agenda? Abortion rights and gay marriage, says Falwell. Classes start August 23.
Dear VoteNoWar Member,
The lawsuit filed to overturn Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York's illegal denial of free speech rights in Central Park for opponents of Bush's domestic and foreign policies during the Republican National Convention has been scheduled for an emergency hearing in Federal District Court in Manhattan. The hearing will be held at the Southern District of New York Courthouse this Friday, August 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Courtroom of Judge William H. Pauley, III.
This constitutional rights litigation is brought in the interest of all those in New York who wish to speak out in Central Park and New York City and to demand that political assembly be allowed on the same terms and conditions as access is afforded others, including corporate or political favorites of the Mayor or the Central Park Conservancy. The Partnership for Civil Justice has made the filings freely available on their website (see below) so that all who are concerned about the situation in New York can have access to the legal challenges and case law underlying the litigation.
There are three things that people can do right away to support this legal challenge and the right to carry out mass demonstration in New York City during the Republican National Convention:
1) Fill the courtroom at the emergency hearing on Friday, August 20.
2) Pledge to attend and bring a friend or family member to the mass demonstrations scheduled for August 28th, 29th and throughout the week.
3) Make a financial contribution. Funds are urgently needed to support the legal challenge and organizing efforts. It is only due to the commitment and self-sacrifice of people who believe in free speech that we can mount this all important challenge. You can make an online donation using the secure server by clicking here where you can also get information for writing a check.
Why Bush Tries to Stifle Dissent
+ *.* * + *.* .+ .* *..+**.+**++.*..+ .* *..+**.+**++.*.+ *.* .+ .*.* *..+**.+**+...It’s a free country, not a Christian nation
by Ed Buckner, Ph.D.
This is a free country, not a Christian nation. Of course, in some sense it is a Christian nation and in some ways it’s not a free country, but in the most important ways, the title is right.
A majority of folks in the U.S. consider themselves, at least in some superficial way, to be Christians, so if that’s all somebody means when they say this a Christian nation, then they’re right. But that's often not all they mean. The letters-to-the-editor writers in Georgia (and I know Knoxville has some of these folks, too) often insist that the "Founding Fathers" established our government as something akin to a secular enforcement arm for the Christian religion, or that the U.S. Constitution is derived from the Ten Commandments, or both.
Fish the military argument is "we don't want reporters giving away our troops positions"
Now the arrests and the threats to journalists sort of gives it away as more an attempt to write history without witnesses but still they will use that argument and many will buy it.
Your segment with Congressman Bernie Sanders was so good last night, I just had to convert to MP3 and put on the Internet for download.
I feel like a bootlegger putting some unique Grateful Dead tracks on the internet, but I feel it was important that everyone hear this, so I did it even though it wasn’t approved by anyone. I got it down to 9MB size, which is equal to about 3 regular MP3 songs. Dial-up users will probably be frustrated about the slow download, but cable and DSL will get it fast. I wish everyone in America could hear this.
It was absolute gold. Jannean and Sam were every bit as good as Bernie.
In a dramatic departure from the Bush administration, Republican Rep. Doug Bereuter says he now believes the U.S. military assault on Iraq was unjustified.
"I've reached the conclusion, retrospectively, now that the inadequate intelligence and faulty conclusions are being revealed, that all things being considered, it was a mistake to launch that military action," Bereuter wrote in a letter to constituents in the final days of his congressional career.
That's especially true in view of the fact that the attack was initiated "without a broad and engaged international coalition," the 1st District congressman said.
"Knowing now what I know about the reliance on the tenuous or insufficiently corroborated intelligence used to conclude that Saddam maintained a substantial WMD (weapons of mass destruction) arsenal, I believe that launching the pre-emptive military action was not justified."
As a result of the war, he said, "our country's reputation around the world has never been lower and our alliances are weakened."
Nobody,
~~~ Fish the military argument is "we don't want reporters giving away our troops positions" Now the arrests and the threats to journalists sort of gives it away as more an attempt to write history without witnesses but still they will use that argument and many will buy it. ~~~

The question is... how many in Iraq will buy it? Surely out of those given access to the press... most of those will buy it. Those chosen to attend the conference in Baghdad... many of those will buy it. But the Iraqi people won't and their being ignored is more dangerous for Allawi than he can imagine. I still think this starts the revolution.

It all happens pretty quick now.

Our hearts are with our American soldiers in Iraq... and with the Iraqi people. There's no contradiction there. Both are oppressed.

Pastors Issue Directive in Response to Reelection Tactic

By Alan Cooperman
Wednesday, August 18, 2004; Page A04

Ten teachers of Christian ethics at leading seminaries and universities have written a letter to President Bush criticizing his campaign's outreach to churches, particularly its effort to gather church membership directories.

The Aug. 12 letter asked Bush to "repudiate the actions of your re-election campaign, which violated a fundamental principle of our democracy." It also urged both presidential candidates to "respect the integrity of all houses of worship."

Interior May Delay Oil and Gas Projects
BLM Officers Can Defer Leases on U.S. Lands While Resource Plans Developed

By Juliet Eilperin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 18, 2004; Page A17

Interior Department officials announced this week they will delay some new oil and gas projects on public lands until they can evaluate drilling's effects on wildlife.

Some hunters' and anglers' groups hailed the initiative, though several environmentalists said that it meant little in light of the administration's push for energy development on federal property.

Assistant Interior Secretary Rebecca Watson told a coalition of conservation groups Saturday that the department had told Bureau of Land Management state and regional officers they have the right to defer leasing if they were in the midst of drafting new resource management plans, which set long-term federal land-use policies. The instruction memorandum, which BLM issued Friday, applies to all 262 million acres it manages.

From the Washington Post:
A Military Campaign

Today, it was Kerry's turn to address the veterans' convention. In his speech, Kerry strongly criticized Bush's plan, The Post's Fred Barbash reported:

"Kerry today attacked President Bush's plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Europe and South Korea, saying they 'raise doubts about our intentions and our commitments' abroad and send 'the wrong signal at the wrong time.' ...

"Kerry said he was particularly concerned about cutting troop levels in South Korea. 'Why are we withdrawing troops from Korea at a time when we are negotiating with North Korea -- a country that really has nuclear weapons?,' he asked." | Read More

KerryEdwards Campaign Statement on 'America For Sale'

To: National Desk, Political Reporter
Contact: Phil Singer of Kerry-Edwards 2004, 202-464-2800; http://www.johnerry.com

WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following document 'America For Sale' was released today by Kerry-Edwards 2004:

George W. Bush has turned his back on the middle class and has put America up for sale.

First, we find out that Bush has shifted America's tax burden to the middle class. Then, he floats the idea of raising taxes on the middle class by imposing a 20 percent national sales tax. Now we find out he's been weakening our health, environmental and safety regulations by placing campaign contributors and corporate interests atop the agencies in charge of protecting Americans.

For the last two weeks, the Bush-Cheney campaign has been on the defensive, struggling to explain why the Bush policies have failed to create a single new job and why the president is trying to raise taxes on the middle-class. This week, it's going to have to explain why George W. Bush been doing the bidding of his top donors.

The GOP's Star-Spangled Party Plans

By Richard Leiby
Wednesday, August 18, 2004; Page C03

When worlds collide: Though a culture war flares regularly between the showbiz community and the Bush administration, GOP operatives are striving mightily to add a Hollywood sheen to the Republican National Convention. Yesterday a convention planner proudly informed us that those swingin' twins Jenna and Barbara Bush will host "R: The Party" Aug. 29 at Manhattan's Roseland Ballroom, with a celeb invite list including (drumroll, please): born-again Christian and actor Stephen Baldwin, known among Republicans as "the good Baldwin"; actress Barret Swatek of "7th Heaven"; Angie Harmon, late of "Law and Order," and her husband, former NFL cornerback Jason Sehorn;Aaron Buerge of "The Bachelor"; country music vets the Gatlin Brothers; the ever-lovely Bo Derek; and our favorite pro wrassler of all time, Ric Flair.

greatest enemies to the
doctrines of Jesus are
those calling themselves
the expositors of them,
who have perverted them
for the structure of a
system of fantasy
absolutely incomprehensible,
and without any foundation

And the day will come
when the mystical generation
of Jesus, by the supreme being
as his father in the womb of

the fable of the generation
of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.
But we may hope
that the dawn of reason

in these United States
will do away with
all this artificial scaffolding,
and restore to us
the primitive and genuine doctrines
of this the most venerated reformer
of human errors.

Character issues
A slate of fuzzy, fluid and fruit-shaped mascots hits the campaign trail.
By Roy Rivenburg, Times Staff Writer

In what could be the weirdest election since California's recall race, a hyperactive bunny, a steroid-pumped clean freak, a giggling blob of dough and 23 other product mascots are campaigning to become America's favorite advertising icon.

The battle of the mascots began earlier this month in New York City. After posing for TV news crews and listening to former Mayor Ed Koch give pointers on how to kiss babies and shake hands, a herd of mascots — including Tony the Tiger, Charlie the Tuna, Kool-Aid Man and the Pillsbury Doughboy — invaded the streets to hustle votes.

From my email. Good talking points.

George Bush is taking away the right to overtime pay from up to 6 million Americans, including nurses, cooks, clerical workers, and nursery school teachers.
George Bush allowed dirty power plants to expand without controlling their emissions.
George Bush endangered pregnant workers when he stopped regulating exposure to the chemicals used in the manufacturing of semiconductors.
George Bush rolled back mercury regulations and proposed to defer controls on toxic mercury emissions by power plants for at least a decade.
George Bush reduced protections for mine workers and eliminated rules to protect workers from tuberculosis.
George Bush gutted health and safety protections in response to pressure from top donors and corporate lobbyists. For example, David Lauriski, head of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, removed protections for coal workers, that he originally sought when he was serving as an executive of a mining company. Chemical industry executives donated more than $1.5 million to Bush's 2000 campaign and were rewarded with looser regulations that boosted corporate profits but put pregnant workers at greater risk.

Ticket ripped because of sticker
Teacher, 55, wanted to see a president
BY IAN C. STOREY
Record-Eagle staff writer
TRAVERSE CITY - Kathryn Mead wanted to see her first sitting president when George W. Bush visited the city.
Instead, Bush campaign staffers tore up the 55-year-old social studies teacher's ticket and refused her admission because she sported a small sticker on her blouse that touted the Democratic ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards.
"I had my ticket and photo identification, but they would not let me in because of this sticker," said Mead, a teacher at Traverse City West Senior High, who said she has seen Queen Elizabeth and Pope John Paul in person.
"I have never found this kind of screening anywhere in my travels around the world. I can't imagine being denied access to hearing the president of the United States speak."
Several people outside the campaign event tried to console Mead, who was visibly upset.
"It really is comedic," said a man holding a Kerry/Edwards sign. "What absolute nonsense."

NEW POLL: JEWISH VOTERS AS DEMOCRATIC AS IN 2000
08/16/04

FOUR YEARS OF GOP EFFORTS TO TARGET AMERICAN JEWS HAVE FAILED

Washington, DC: A just-released survey demonstrates that despite a four-year effort, GOP attempts to woo the Jewish vote for President Bush have failed, with likely Jewish voters preferring Senator Kerry over President Bush by a whopping 75-22 percent margin -- essentially identical to the 76-21 percent margin by which the same respondents voted for then-Vice President Al Gore over then-Governor Bush in 2000. (Please see footnote, below.)

The poll, performed by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research for the National Jewish Democratic Council and The Solomon Project, shows that American Jews continue to strongly prefer Senator Kerry over President Bush. The survey of 817 likely Jewish voters was conducted between July 26-28, 2004, and has a margin of error of /- 3.5 percent.

Among the poll's major findings:

** Senator Kerry maintains a very strong lead over President Bush within the Jewish community. Senator Kerry leads President Bush by a margin of 75 percent to 22 percent. Senator Kerry's lead is as strong as the American Jewish vote was in 2000 for then-Vice President Gore over then-Governor Bush; respondents voted in 2000 for Gore over Bush by a margin of 76 percent to 21 percent.

Editorial: King George in La Crosse

An editorial
August 18, 2004

George Bush's re-election campaign has paid the city of La Crosse $7,800 for extra security, police overtime and other expenses incurred during the president's visit to the western Wisconsin city in May.

In so doing, the president's campaign aides have acknowledged that they crossed the line when they effectively demanded that La Crosse officials turn much of their town into the backdrop for a photo opportunity set up to benefit the Bush campaign.

That presidential visit, which was billed as an old-fashioned campaign rally, evolved into an illustration of just about everything that is wrong with contemporary campaigning.

The Bush campaign swept into town with all the pomp and circumstance - and demands - of a royal tour. Streets were closed. Traffic was diverted. Parks were surrounded with security fences through which only Bush supporters were allowed to pass. Ordinary citizens - and, of course, all who might disagree with the president - were forced to keep their distance.

There was nothing public, or "open," about the Bush visit. It was a closed party organized for the purpose of creating nice images for the national media. And asking the city of La Crosse to pay for the promotion of the president's re-election campaign amounted to a raid on the city treasury for political purposes. While communities have a responsibility to provide basic security for visiting candidates, there is no responsibility to pay for walling off those candidates from the people who live in the town.

Dadalux is right! Zappa won the Cold War. It was considered a badge of honour to have a FZ record in Eastern Europe. Havel, the first president of Czechoslovakia, was a massive Zappa fan. He even wanted Mr. Zappa to be ambassador to Czechoslovakia, but the first Bush administration refused to do so (not surprising).

Joe's Garage was especially well known in Eastern Europe. Republicans love the homosexual stuff between robots. They really are FASCINATED by gay sex. They OBSESS about it. They know EVERY GRAPHIC DETAIL about anal sex, oral sex, fisting, and masturbation. EVERY DETAIL. One wonders why.....

George Bush allowed dirty power plants to expand without controlling their emissions.

He definately isn't trying to make the world a safer place for people living near power plants because the President has slowed the enforcement of power plant pollution rules, called the New Source Review, which requires plants to add modern air pollution controls when they upgrade their facilities. Think Mike Leavitt, appointed head of the EPA by GWBush, will force the issue? Not a chance.

Maybe Sam and Janeane should be there to interview the protestors out in the pens, since they would be more sympathetic and less hostile. The interviews would also point out the fact that protestors aren't allowed anywhere near Bush.

Questions continue to appear faster than answers these days about John Kerry’s ever-changing four months as a swift boat captain in Viet Nam.

The latest scuffle involves a cast of characters including the Reverend David Alston, Fred Short, Captain Ted Peck, and, of course, John Kerry.

David Alston stood before the crowd and recalled the many harrowing experiences he had shared with his good friend and former captain, John Kerry.

Alston kept the crowd in a rapt and hushed silence as he professed his undying love and devotion to his good friend. ''I know him from a small boat in Vietnam where we fought and bled together serving our country. We usually patrolled the narrow waterways of the Mekong Delta, flanked on both sides by thick jungle. After combat engagements Lieutenant Kerry always took the time to calm us down, to bring us back to reality, to give us hope, to show us what we truly had within ourselves. I came to love and respect him as a man I could trust with life itself.''

It sounds like a movie script. Doesn’t a vision of Tom Hanks leading his band of men in search of Pvt. Ryan across France spring to mind? Eating together, sleeping together, protecting each other in battle in the steamy jungles of Viet Nam, and the brave young captain comforting his crew in hard times. Yes, David Alston managed to cram all of these experiences into the six days he actually served on John Kerry’s swift boat PCF-94. Not only that, he became devoted to a man with whom he actually only saw combat a total of two times. That’s right--twice.

Kerry Decries Bush Plan to Recall Troops

By RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer

CINCINNATI - John Kerry (news - web sites), telling fellow combat veterans he's their "true brother in arms," said Wednesday that President Bush (news - web sites)'s plan to withdraw U.S. troops from Europe and Asia would weaken U.S. security and embolden nuclear-armed North Korea (news - web sites).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That Kerry a good War Dog!
But I hope he don't plan to lead troops against "nuclear-armed North Korea"
That is taking the throwing rocks at tanks thing too far!
Makes me wonder..
If there is a crisis..
Would Kerry would be more confident trying to back down Korea without 30,000 of our own troop in the blast zone?
But oh well, his heart is in the right place!
He is trying!
An Entire Class of Thieves
Was it all the fault of Ayn Rand, of Carter and Kennedy, of the Chicago School, of Hollywood, of God's Demise?
by ALEXANDER COCKBURN
Now, there was indeed a vast criminal class coming to full vicious potential in the 1990s: a group utterly vacant of the most elementary instincts of social propriety, devoid of moral fiber, selfish to an almost unfathomable degree. The class comes in the form of our corporate elite.
Given a green light in the late 1970s by the deregulatory binge urged by corporate-funded think tanks and launched legislatively by Jimmy Carter and Ted Kennedy, by the 1990s America's corporate leadership had evolved a simple strategy for criminal self-enrichment.
Step one: lie about your performance, in a manner calculated to deceive investors. This was engineered by the production of a "pro forma" balance sheet freighted with accounting chicanery of every stripe and hue, willingly supplied by Arthur Andersen and others. Losses were labeled "capital expenditures"; losing assets were "sold" to co-conspirators in the large banks for the relevant accounting period. Later, using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, slightly more realistic balance sheets would be presented to the SEC and the IRS.
Flaunting the "pro forma" numbers, corporations would issue more stock, borrow more money from some co- conspiratorial bank, buy back the stock for the chief executives, who would further inflate its value by dint of bogus accountancy, sell the stock to the chumps and bail out with their millions before the roof fell in, leaving pension funds like CalPERS holding the bag. The fortunes amassed by President Bush and Vice President Cheney are vivid illustrations of the technique.
The scale of looting? Prodigious. This orgy of thievery, without parallel in the history of capitalism, was condoned and abetted year after year by the archbishop of our economy, Alan Greenspan, a man with a finely honed sense of distinction be
Concerns over economy persist
Wed Aug 18, 7:30 AM ET
• Fewer new jobs. On Aug. 6, the Labor Department (news - web sites)'s monthly report on payroll employment showed 78,000 jobs were created in June and 32,000 jobs in July, compared with an average of 225,000 a month through the first five months of the year. The numbers shocked economists and fueled talk that the economy remains sick.
Bush is about 1.2 million jobs short of the total number of U.S. jobs when he took office. If job creation recovers its earlier pace, the economy could erase that deficit by year-end. But for that to happen before Election Day, the economy would have to generate an average 600,000 jobs a month - something that has happened only twice in records going back to 1955. If job creation stays sluggish, Bush could be stuck with the stigma of being the first president since Herbert Hoover to lose jobs on his watch.
• Sagging stock market. Stock prices, a key indicator of future growth, have been pointing south, weighed down by record oil prices, terrorism worries, election-related uncertainty and fears that business profit growth is slowing. Despite gains in the past two days, the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index is down more than 5% since early July, the biggest six-week drop since the buildup to the invasion of Iraq last year.
Steadfast in Defiance, Cleric Gains Stature With Iraq Masses
Wed Aug 18, 7:55 AM ET
By Tyler Marshall and Henry Chu Times Staff Writers
BAGHDAD — Militant cleric Muqtada Sadr's refusal Tuesday to meet with a delegation of Iraqi religious and political leaders is the clearest indicator yet that recent fighting in Najaf has strengthened the anti-American leader, some analysts say.
The snub, which followed last week's breakdown of talks with envoys of interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, made it clear that Sadr expected any resolution to the two-week confrontation to proceed on his terms and timetable. The message was reinforced by the 1,000 militiamen who greeted the delegation with raised fists and shouts of "Long live Muqtada!"
Although Allawi's government had decided to resume military operations to oust Sadr's forces from the sacred Imam Ali shrine they have occupied, he opted to let a new round of talks proceed.
Several observers say Allawi and U.S. forces have no viable options other than trying for a negotiated end to the uprising because attempting to crush Sadr militarily would carry too high a political price.
I am reading the Marquis de Sade's Justine. The Marquis's arguments against religion are incredibly persuasive. De Sade was more than just a sexual sadist. A method to his madness, so to speak. But, one cannot deny the spiritual essence of man. It's what Tolstoy wrote, that man cannot live without faith. That there is this spiritual nothingness that cannot be denied if we don't have some faith or another. Something to believe in. Art is my religion....
Thousands Apply for California Port Jobs
25 minutes ago Add U.S. National -
LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of thousands of applicants are competing for 3,000 temporary jobs at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, hoping for lucrative wages in an otherwise weak labor market.
The jobs, which pay $20 to $28 an hour, were created to handle a record amount of cargo coming through both ports.
A Long Beach post office spokesman said Tuesday that a conservative estimate put the number of mailed-in applications at 220,000 to 250,000. The number may have been inflated by applicants sending in more than one each, though officials have said people who do so would be rejected.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union asked a mediator whether the hiring process could be delayed to ensure that everything runs smoothly, but the mediator ordered the union and West Coast shipping lines to proceed with their lottery and begin picking the 3,000 new dockworkers Thursday, as planned.
Hello — I just want to take a moment to praise Janeane and Sam and whoever else is responsible behind the scenes at AAR for the long and illuminating interview with Prof. Juan Cole Monday night. It was such a relief to hear his outrage at the burning of the Pakistani Al-Qaeda mole, to hear rage that matches my own. I've been reading Cole's blog for nearly a year, and have been flogging his point-of-view to everyone I encounter who thinks we've done right by Iraq.
When the USA (i.e., the military, administration and sordid host that enabled its selection) allowed the burning of the Baghdad Library, I thought that was it. That has proved to be the case. I can't think of another action, or lack of action, that could have more clearly transmitted the cavalier heart of the mission.
Please continue to expose us to people like Prof. Cole and points of view that are rarely carried in the brand-name media.
Again, thank you, and power to your elbows.
Rumsfeld: Use Caution in Reform of Intelligence
By Josh White and Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, August 18, 2004; Page A01
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld warned senators yesterday that moving hastily to centralize all U.S. intelligence-gathering efforts under a new national director could spawn confusion while the country is at war and could prevent vital information from getting to those on the battlefield.
Pledging to work with Congress to "strengthen our ability to live in this new and dangerous world," Rumsfeld said that he believes the Pentagon and the CIA have created a strong, interlocking relationship to close gaps revealed by the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.), left, and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld speak before a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee, of which Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) is a member. Warner suggested a less dramatic reorganization than a centralization of U.S. intelligence gathering. (Melina Mara -- The Washington Post)
Adding another layer of bureaucracy, he said, could place "new barriers and filters" between the Defense Department's intelligence offices and the field commanders who rely on their data. He added that he prefers having separate agencies that can focus on their specialties rather than a "single and preeminent national intelligence organization."
Israel's Sharon Confronts Party Rebels Before Vote
TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) confronted Likud party rebels with a pledge to put the good of Israel first Wednesday as he battled to avoid an embarrassing defeat over his Gaza pullout plan.
He addressed a raucous Likud convention before voting began on a motion sponsored by party rightists to bar Sharon from bringing the center-left Labor Party into government to prop up his plan for "disengaging" from conflict with Palestinians.
"There are times in the life of a nation when it must make difficult decisions. The state of Israel has reached that moment," Sharon said of his plan to evacuate all Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) and a few from the West Bank.
"This is the voice of someone who knows how to lead a country above any interest, whether partisan or personal," said Sharon.
LONDON (Reuters) - Strippers and pole dancers should be banned from performing in stretch limousines, according to a British report.
Councilors from the mountainous Welsh county of Gwynedd said many limousine hire companies were providing erotic dancers as entertainment for clients, but agreed in-car striptease was "inappropriate."
"Lately, stretch limousines have been used more and more," said the report prepared for the council's licensing committee.
"Some operators are providing entertainment to clients within the vehicle which may involve inappropriate activities such as lap dancing, giving rise to concerns about indecency."
The report did not make clear how many companies were offering motorized pole dancing in North Wales.
then you get them to tell you what they know, even get them to work for you if need be
thats the method that comes highly recommended by solomon, anyways...
Restaurant for Cats Opens in New York
Wed Aug 18,11:13 AM ET Add Strange News - AP to My Yahoo!
NEW YORK - Dressed in a tuxedo, Simba sat at the front of one of Manhattan's newest dining establishments and nodded at people who greeted him. Then he yawned, began to roll on the floor and lick his paws. That's acceptable behavior at the Meow Mix Cafe, a new eatery designed especially for cats and their human owners.
Simba, an 8-month-old kitten, was joined by about two dozen other tabbies, Persians and Burmese for a feast at Tuesday's grand opening of the cafe, which is owned by the Meow Mix Company, a Secaucus, N.J.-based cat food maker.
"Why not take your cat out for dinner?" asked Simba's owner, Leah Thompson, 19. "There's always things for dogs, but never cats."
The First Amendment, they insist, was designed only to keep government from controlling churches, and not at all the reverse. Furthermore, they insist, these framers were themselves devoted Christians and wanted a government that supported Christianity without favoring one denomination over another.
government should have no control over religion
religion should excercise no control over the
government
we are not a Christian nation
but Christians live here
along with Moslems
Mormans, Jews, and Sadists.
The point is to try and to accomodate everyone
without infringing on anyone's rights using universally accepted mores, should such mores
exist.
A WICCAN WINS ONE
Wed Aug 11, 8:00 PM ET
By James J. Kilpatrick
If you ask politely, Darla Kaye Wynne will acknowledge that she is indeed a Wiccan, which is to say, a Witch -- but a Witch in the same uppercase way that Muslims are Islamic and Baptists are Christians. Her religious beliefs are rooted in pagan rites that antedate Christianity by a thousand years. Sad to say, some good Christians in Chester County, S.C., have treated her in a most un-Christian way.
James J. Kilpatrick
Perhaps her troubles will ease now that the 4th U.S. Circuit has ruled in her favor. Then again, maybe not. A huge part of the history of religion is a history of bigotry, zealotry, and gross intolerance of nonbelievers. South Carolinians are probably no better and no worse than humankind everywhere.
Wynne's story is not especially novel, and the 4th Circuit's opinion of July 22 is not exactly a landmark in the field of First Amendment jurisprudence. Nonetheless, the case merits a few minutes of your time.
The story begins in 1997, when Wynne moved from the cold climes of Alaska to the warmer fields of South Carolina. She was single, aged 33. She found employment as a home-care aide and driver for Alzheimer's patients. With her parrot, her Yorkshire terrier and two pet raccoons, she settled in Great Falls (pop. 2,194), some 40 miles north of Columbia. Largely out of curiosity, she began attending monthly meetings of the town council. Usually fewer than a dozen citizens showed up.
While Great Falls chews on its defeat, the plaintiff Wynne seeks surcease. Her home has been vandalized nine times. Hoodlums have killed her cat and hanged its gutted body. Someone put sand in the gas tank of her truck. Townspeople have ostracized her. Even so, she comes across over the telephone as the most cheerful Witch I ever met. It's a very curious thing.. to use your opponent's tools against them.
I just followed a suggestion made by a caller on Al's show to use the 'write your letter to the editor' feature of the Bush '04 website...
...to write a letter to about 8 newspapers in Rhode Island about WHY Bush should not be re-elected.
It was quite beautiful.. and if they try to send email to the email address I gave them to validate me, I'll gladly have the letters sent to my spam bin.
I bet they've already traced my IP though. Ok, big woop I work at a university..
Tourists are pleasantly surprised when New Yorkers act as friendly and polite as the people back home in Maybury. However, delegates to this month's Republican National Convention shouldn't expect to be treated to our standard out-of-towner treatment. The Republican delegates here to coronate George W. Like the hapless saps whose blood they sent to be spilled into Middle Eastern sands, they will be given intentionally incorrect directions to nonexistent places. Objects will be thrown in their direction. Children will call them obscene names.
Al-Sadr OKs Plan to End Fighting in Najaf
8 minutes ago
By ABDUL HUSSEIN AL-OBEIDI, Associated Press Writer
NAJAF, Iraq - Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr accepted a peace plan Wednesday for Najaf that would disarm his militiamen and remove them from a holy shrine where they are hiding out, according to a spokesman. However, Al-Sadr wanted to negotiate how the deal would be implemented.
Meanwhile, in Baghdad, the Iraqi National Conference picked 81 members of a National Council that will act as a watchdog on the interim Iraqi government until January elections. Instead of voting on the 81 as planned, conference delegates approved a candidate list after a competing list was withdrawn.
The cleric's decision came just hours after Iraqi Defense Minister Hazem Shaalan said the government was prepared to raid the revered Imam Ali shrine as early as Wednesday to root out the militants.
Iraq cleric 'to end Najaf revolt'
US-led troops have been fighting Sadr forces for nearly two weeks
Radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr has reportedly agreed to Iraqi government demands to end an uprising in the holy city of Najaf.
Delegates at a conference to select an interim Iraqi council were told Mr Sadr had agreed to leave the Imam Ali shrine and disarm his Mehdi militia.
However, fighting continues in Najaf, where Mr Sadr's forces have battled US-led troops for nearly two weeks.
Delegates later chose 81 members of the council without holding a planned vote.
The developments came as the conference met for an unscheduled fourth day on Wednesday in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Toni... I hope I'm wrong but I think Al Sadr will be attacked in the shrine at sunrise Najaf time... 6-7 hours from now. The only thing that would prevent that (I think) is the desertion of those Iraqi troops assembled to do it. I don't put it past this Allawi bunch to hold those soldiers' families as assurance.
Small snippets from the Allawi government make me think they are not interested in Al Sadr's acceptance of any peace deal.
I think we're hours from extreme violence.
I think the attack could come toward the end of tonight's show... or... if a night time attack (unlikely because I doubt Iraqi troops are trained or equipped for night attacks) it could come at any time.
Again... I very sincerely hope I'm wrong.
There is not one correct line in this! Please tell whoever sent this to you to go to www.factcheck.org and to please look at Kerry’s voting record in the Senate. He voted against 76% of the exact same issues that he said he would implement if he was president and that is an undisputed fact that can be proven.
I think Allawi and his American handlers have, perhaps correctly, figured out that they are in a no-win situation and that there will be hell to pay now... no matter what they do. I can't imagine they want Al Sadr around any longer and are gonna take their chances. Now that the conference is over in Baghdad and they have their puppet congress chosen, there's no reason for delay.
Here come de revolution.
But then he admitted there was no evidence of ties between Saddam and al Qaeda  FLIPPITY-FLOOPITY-FLOOP
He got rid of a horrible dictator, democrats would have you believe the world would be a better place with him still in power. They need to wake up and understand that the Muslim/Arab militant nations do not want to shake hands and be friends with us as Kerry will have you believe. They hate us and want us to die and always have. Please wake up and smell this fact.
So then he said the war was to bring Western style democracy to the entire Middle East.  FLIPPITY-FLOOPITY-FLOP, FLOP FLOP FLOP FLOP
He did not!!!! He went there to unseat this minion of evil. Please show me where “western style democracy” was ever his agenda. He said that millions were dying under the tyranny of an evil dictator and these people had the right to live and to govern themselves.
He said he wouldn’t invade Iraq without a vote in the UN.  FLIP
The UN sucks. They have countries like Germany and France making decisions that are wrong, but nobody questioned them and their reasoning for voting against war. The fact is that both of those countries had huge business with Iraq and Saddam and if Iraq became a democracy, they(the people) could choose who to do business with and people other than Saddam would reap the benefits. Come on!!!
But then he invaded without a vote.  FLOPPITY FLOOP
Something had to be done while the UN floundered with Germany and France’s indecision. You forget, we were going on intelligence that came from several countries intelligence communities. We acted on the information that we had.
Secretive bank gets new scrutiny
Doreen Carvajal/IHT Wednesday, August 18, 2004
EIB lends billions but is an unknown
LUXEMBOURG The world's largest and most obscure public bank rises above the Kirchberg Plateau in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg like a cream and concrete layer cake, sheltering a potent, blue-chip financial institution that has ever so discreetly managed to outspend and outborrow the much better-known World Bank in Washington.
.
On almost any given day inside the hushed art-filled headquarters of the European Investment Bank, officials borrow millions in international currencies in a ceaseless torrent of everything from euros to Polish zloty. From its coffers, the money spreads to regional development projects such as power stations in Northern Ireland, or to shiny trams for Barcelona. It flows to oil pipelines in Pakistan and geranium plantations in Kenya.
.
Most people who ultimately benefit from this bounty in their daily lives have no idea that their anonymous, wealthy benefactor is the European Investment Bank. But without the EIB, and its immense resources that enabled more than E42 billion, or $52 billion, in loans last year, many of these projects would not have flourished.
.
Yet those who do know are not necessarily grateful. Critics regard the bank as a phantom power, the most secretive public institution lending money around the globe.
.
It is a nonprofit bank owned by the European Union's 25 member nations that zealously guards its most vital documents and reveals little information about a third of its lending, called global loans.
Crude futures logs closing price record atop $47 By Myra P. Saefong
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- September crude rose 52 cents to close at $47.27 a barrel in New York to log another record closing price. The intraday record was also set late in the session at $47.45 with traders pricing in a fall in U.S. crude and gasoline inventories for last week. Markets were still nervous as uncertainty surrounded possible peace between Shiite militants and U.S. forces in Najaf, Iraq.
Soldier Sues U.S. Military Over Extended Service
Tue Aug 17, 7:00 PM ET Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!
By Adam Tanner
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A California Army National Guard sergeant filed a lawsuit on Tuesday asserting that the government can not prevent reservists from leaving the military when their enlistment periods end.
The suit against Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other military officials names the plaintiff only as John Doe. It says he served with distinction in the Marine Corps and Army for nine years on active duty and three years as a reservist.
"This lawsuit seeks to stop the forced retention of men and women who have fulfilled their service obligations," said attorney Michael Sorgen. "When their period of enlistment ends, they should be entitled to return to their families."
"It's not that he's a coward," he added. "He's just had it up to here."
The Army has issued "stop-loss" orders preventing tens of thousands of soldiers designated to serve in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites) from leaving the military if their volunteer commitment ends during their deployment. The Pentagon (news - web sites) has relied heavily on reservists to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Keyes says state needs an outsider
Illinois corrupt, Obama not for reform, he says
By H. Gregory Meyer, Tribune staff reporter. Tribune staff reporters David Mendell and Rudolph Bush contributed to this report
Published August 18, 2004
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes charged Tuesday that politics in Illinois is chronically corrupt and that Democratic opponent Barack Obama wants to control the system, not reform it.
Keyes, a transplant from Maryland who had no ties with Illinois politics before he was selected as the GOP nominee this month, said his outsider status would be an asset in deodorizing what he called the "deeply smelly" nature of public corruption here.
"One of the problems in this state is this whole political machinery, in which bosses and their little cronies act in the interests of their little cliques," Keyes said after a news conference in Chicago. "People tell me, `Oh, Barack Obama has challenged the bosses.' He only challenges the bosses because he wants to be one of them. He doesn't want to end that system of corruption. He just wants to take it over."
There were chaotic scenes when the delegation arrived inside the shrine amid the sound of explosions and gunshots from fighting raging elsewhere in the city.
FISHGREASE'S REASONING
Lets take a look at what Allawi has to gain from NOT attacking Al Sadr right now.
1) Okay Al Sadr pulls out of the shrine and disarms his Militia. That is, they give up the weapons they have with them in the shrine. Nothing. Most of Al Sadr's militia isn't even in the shrine. They are all over Iraq. AKs and grenade launchers are plintiful and cheap.
2) Al Sadr's militia becomes a political force... when Al Sadr beats Allawi in nationwide acceptance polls by a HUGE margin. Can anyone really believe Allawi or Negroponte wants this?
3) After all the bad things Al Sadr has said about the Allawi government and his American handlers... Al Sadr wins... he stays alive and remains a force with both political and military power.
That's what I'm thinking, folks.
Cathy,
~~~ Right or wrong Fishgrease, I'm enjoying this imagery. Thanks! ~~~

Here's some less pleasing imagery.

The attack will start with bullets traveling through the heads of journalists in Najaf at rifle velocities. Then the body's will be transported to near the shrine so that they can be said to have been killed in the fighting.

Allawi's goons weren't kidding when they threatened journalists in Najaf with death. Why would they risk the political capitol of the threats? American and other non-Iraqi soldiers of fortune... dressed in Arab garb (or maybe like pirates?) and CIA will be leading the attack into the shrine. Nobody picked this up days ago and he was and is correct. Since those journalists left alive will be in hiding... they'll get away with it too.

This is going to be very ugly, folks. Its almost a blessing the world won't see any of it.

~~~ Fishy -- can I make one prediction about al Sadr? A .308 at 500 meters. ~~~
Nope. Al Sadr won't be anywhere in the open enough to get hit from that range. My guess is that he'll get caught in a tunnel trying to leave the shrine. By now... the American military has all of those covered. Doesn't matter where, or under what circumstances they kill him... its their story now.
Al Sadr is pretty slippery and he might not still even be IN the shrine... which would explain his not meeting with the delegation from Baghdad when they traveled there. If he's still there... they'll kill him.
DEMOCRACY NOW! DAILY EMAIL DIGEST
August 18, 2004
TODAY'S SHOW: Wednesday, August 18
* Exclusive: Israeli Nuclear Whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu Risks Jail
To Speak to Democracy Now! in First Nat'l U.S. Interview *
Risking prison again, nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu defies
Israeli government restrictions and speaks for the first time to a
national audience in this country.
Mordechai Vanunu worked as a nuclear technician at Dimona, Israel's
secret nuclear installation from 1976 to 1985. He worked there at a
time
when Israel was insisting it would not be the first to introduce
nuclear
weapons to the Middle East. What Vanunu discovered is that Israel had
secretly developed an extensive nuclear program, hiding its existence
from the Israeli people and parliament, and the world.
Vanunu leaked information and photos of Israel's nuclear weapons
program
to the Sunday Times in London. He was subsequently kidnapped by Israeli
spy agency Mossad in Italy and then jailed. He would go on to spend 18
years behind bars including 11 in solitary confinement.
He was released on April 21 under strict government restrictions.
Democracy Now!'s Amy Goodman reached Vanunu on his cell phone in East
Jerusalem where he has been staying since his release in April. He
defied the Israeli government's restriction on speaking with foreigners
to talk with us.
Bowling Green, OH 43402
Well, the gay marraige nazis have come to my hometown.
I went to the Kroger store to get a soda from their machine and heard a man with a clipboard say something about Kerry and November. I approached him and asked why he was collecting sigs.
He said he was collecting them to get an initiative on the ballot to define marriage as occuring ONLY between a man and a woman.
The first thing I said was "Gross". I tried to say it as forcefully as I could so that the person signing might think twice about it.
As i walked away I turned and said "Who created them anyway?" while pointing to the sky. I added that "He's alot more powerful than you!"
I don't subscribe to G*d having a gender, and I do think all people have equal rights. I wish I could have said what I wanted to say better, but I just wanted to leave.
Mixed Signals On Iraq Standoff
Aug. 18, 2004
An aide to Muqtada al-Sadr says the cleric has agreed to a peace plan for Najaf, but wants to negotiate how it is implemented.
The official in Baghdad says the Shiite leader wants to ensure his fighters won't be arrested. The official said al-Sadr has other minor conditions.
Al-Sadr has made contradictory statements in the past and a previous truce collapsed earlier this month.
A Shiite delegate told the National Conference in Baghdad that al-Sadr had accepted a peace deal delivered in Najaf. The plan requires the cleric to disarm his fighters, pull them out of a shrine and turn them into a political party. In return they get amnesty.
But gunfire and explosions continued in Najaf even after the deal was announced. The militia has been fighting U.S. and Iraqi forces most of the month in Najaf.
Iraq's interim government has threatened to storm the Imam Ali Shrine if al-Sadr refuses to leave.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/02/24/iraq/printable541815.shtml
The deteriorating security situation in Najaf has led the United Nations to stop repatriating refugees to Iraq, the BBC reports.
The U.S. military said a rocket attack killed five civilians in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
Several mortar rounds were fired Wednesday at the headquarters of the Polish-led multinational force in Iraq, and seven people were injured, a military spokesman said.
In volatile Anbar Province, a Marine with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in action Tuesday during "security and stability operations," the military reported.
An Iraqi health official says at least five civilians are dead and eight wounded in fighting about 120 miles southeast of Baghdad.
An Iraqi working for German ZDF television has been killed west of the Iraqi capital, the station's chief producer in Baghdad said Wednesday.
what do you think of this?
I obtained a copy of 'A Higher Form
of Killing' by Jeremy Paxman and
Robert Harris, published by Hill &
Wang. On page 240 you will find
an exerpt from an Army manual discussing
the feasibility of manufacturing
and deploying "ethnic chemical weapons" --
designed to kill people from
SPECIFIC ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS.
On page 241 you will find an extract
from a 1969 Senate appropriations
hearing, with testimony (speaker
unidentified) regarding the
development of 'A NEW CLASS OF BIOLOGICAL
WEAPONS' (note the plural)
which would be "refractory" to
the human immunological system.
Who's testimony was this?
Was he asking for money
to build a few of these diseases?
What senators heard this testimony?
Are they still in office?
Did they appropriate any funds?
If so, who got them?
What did they eventually spend them on?
The book doesn't say, but
presumably some answers might be
found in >>>the Congressional Record<<<.
I also recommend 'The Mind of the
Bible Believer' by Edmund Cohen, Ph.D.,
'Salvation for Sale,' by Gerard Thomas Straub,
and 'Holy Terror,' by Flo Conway and
Jim Siegelman (for any of you wishing
to follow up on the church/state issues
discussed earlier).
Okay. That's it. THE END.
It's been a pleasure talking to you --
and DON'T FORGET TO REGISTER TO VOTE.
U.S. GIs To Raise Uzbek Tensions?
ALMATY, Kazakhstan, Aug. 18, 2004
(CBS/AP) Washington's plans to beef up its military base in Uzbekistan as part of a troop realignment abroad could whip up tensions between the impoverished ex-Soviet republic's secular government and radical Islamic groups, analysts and opposition politicians say.
Top Pentagon officials said Monday that the United States would make greater use of training and logistics bases on the soil of new allies such as Uzbekistan, Poland and Romania, while closing some U.S. installations in Europe to consolidate forces at larger bases there.
The moves, planned to occur over 10 years, are intended shift American forces from a Cold War footing to positions closer to the Middle East and other areas key to the war on terrorism.
FAIR is on to Jody Wilgoren!!
Extra!, August 2004
Covering the "Caged Hamster"
Media's picture of Kerry based on RNC distortions
By Peter Hart
"Like a caged hamster, Senator John Kerry is restless on the road," wrote the New York Times' Jodi Wilgoren (6/13/04), beginning a piece that promised "authentic insights" into the Democratic presidential candidate. Aside from the banalities (Kerry dislikes wearing suits on hot, humid days, and uses a cellphone more than John Glenn did when he ran for president in 1984), what's most striking about the piece is how closely it mirrors the Republican caricature of Kerry, portraying him as an elitist with "a prep-school cultivated competitive sensibility," whose speeches "are filled with multisyllabic upper-crust phrasing," and as a "contradictory" character who "is anything but simple and straightforward." Even his playing a musical instrument is portrayed as somehow weird and un-American: "And where former President Bill Clinton plays cards and President Bush turns to the treadmill, Senator Kerry strums his Spanish classical guitar in a kind of musical meditation."
Wilgoren's piece, with its effect of amplifying Bush campaign allegations about Kerry, is typical of 2004 presidential campaign coverage. This phenomenon is seen not only in the media's frequent forays into trivia, but also in their attempts to cover substantive issues—as in February, when the Republican National Committee (2/22/04) released a list of weapons systems that Kerry allegedly "voted against."
Partisan TV pundits like Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity (3/1/04) quickly echoed these charges, claiming, "He's voting against every major weapons system we now use in our military." The partisan Hannity's participation in the RNC's attack was perhaps to be expected, but he was not the only media figure to pass along the Republican allegations without examination. CNN anchor Judy Woodruff (2/25/04) framed the issue this way in an interview with Rep. Norm Dicks (D.-Wash.): "The Republicans list something like 13 different weapons systems that they say the record shows Senator Kerry voted against. The Patriot missile, the B-1 bomber, the Trident missile
"Organized religion destroys who we are by inhibiting our actions, by inhibiting our decisions, out of, out of fear of some intangible parent figure that shakes a finger at us from thousands of years ago and says, "Do it . . . do it... and I'll fucking spank you!"
i've seen the ensemble moderne play Zappa's orchestral work
incredible ...there are a couple albums of that stuff now
the next zappa release is zappa conducts them playing Pierre Boulez
there's lots of his stuff that will come out for years i bet...it's gonna be like tupac
i like the electronic stuff he does
and last year i saw the American Composers Orchestra play "G-spot Tornado," "Dog Breath/Uncle Meat,"
"the Adventures of Greggary Peccary," and "Peaches en Regalia" at Carnegie Hall...
man they sounded like a frigging high school band...wasn't no Ensemble Moderne, i tell you whut...
but still they tried, and the crowd went wild...i've never seen a classical music crowd so excited
Excuse me, Uncle Sam,
why is Dick Cheney sad?
Did he fall from the high-bar?
Did he step over the line during the floor exercise?
Did he lose to Ian Thorpe?
Did he fall backward while attempting to lift 155 kg?
Did he witness Catalina Ponor's last routine?
Did he miss Alexei Nemov on American TeeVee?
Why?
even bears are not like bush:
BAKER LAKE, Wash. - Rain-eeeeer .... Bear? When state Fish and Wildlife agents recently found a black bear passed out on the lawn of Baker Lake Resort, there were some clues scattered nearby — dozens of empty cans of Rainier Beer.
The bear apparently got into campers' coolers and used his claws and teeth to puncture the cans. And not just any cans.
"He drank the Rainier and wouldn't drink the Busch beer," said Lisa Broxson, bookkeeper at the campground and cabins resort east of Mount Baker.
Fish and Wildlife enforcement Sgt. Bill Heinck said the bear did try one can of Busch, but ignored the rest.
"He didn't like that (Busch) and consumed, as near as we can tell, about 36 cans of Rainier."
A wildlife agent tried to chase the bear from the campground but the animal just climbed a tree to sleep it off for another four hours. Agents finally herded the bear away, but it returned the next morning.
Agents then used a large, humane trap to capture it for relocation, baiting the trap with the usual: doughnuts, honey and, in this case, two open cans of Rainier. That did the trick.
"This is a new one on me," Heinck said. "I've known them to get into cans, but nothing like this. And it definitely had a preference."
NOT for dada - he knows......
Frank Zappa -- musical genius, a Juliard magna (no small feat), libertine (par excellance), coolest fucking hippie to walk this earth -- bar NONE, the dude would musically rival the three B's in their time!
Too bad the musical consortiums of his time suppressed & nearly squashed him. R.I.P.
If there's an afterlife, I will par-tay with Frank's clan, no doubt!
"First, they came for the terrorists,
and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a terrorist.
Then they came for the foreigners, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a foreigner.
Then they came for the Arab-Americans, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't Arab-American.
Then they came for the radical dissenters, and I didn't speak up, because I was just an ordinary troubled citizen.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.
can someone please point out on air that france and germany did not go along with this war because they benifited by Sadam concerting his oil for food money into the euro, and that they knew that the entire point of the war was for american corporations in bed with the administration to profit. If Kerry was elected I'm sure the imnperial train would continue to roll, but perhaps he would open the doors to european business which would bring France and Germany to the table once some money was involved. This whole thing is a giant powerplay for the last reserves of earths oil and the EU knows that. Kerry just might be able to get some of our troops out of there just long enough for people back home to start ousting the corporate interest and maybe bring peace in our lifetime to the middle east.
Posted by: at August 18, 2004 07:53 PM
I disagree with the statement that we could've lost would make it worse. WE WOULD'VE SAVED A TON OF MONEY AND LIVES if we had just LOST!!!
Posted by: Jeff at August 18, 2004 07:56 PM
Why frame the debate about how well we're doing it? The fucking point is we should not be in a pre-emptive war in the first place!
Posted by: at August 18, 2004 07:57 PM
no one is going to argue that because Kerry is now pro-war, and to argue that would make Kerry look bad, even though the majority of his base is anti-war and anti-corporate crony. If he did pull out and became anti-war he would find out very quickly what happens to upstarts in todays corporate run government....all he has to do is ask Ted Kennedy about his brothers.
Jack Kelly: Not so swift
Real questions remain on Kerry's war record
Sunday, August 15, 2004
Accepting the Democratic nomination for vice president, John Edwards said of John Kerry, "If you have any question of what he is made of, just spend three minutes with the men who served with him then." The Democratic National Committee is trying hard to keep you from spending a minute with most of the sailors who served with Kerry during his abbreviated tour in Vietnam, because they have unflattering things to say. The DNC is threatening to sue television stations which run a commercial produced by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
Jack Kelly is national security writer for the Post-Gazette and The Blade of Toledo, Ohio (jkelly@post-gazette.com, 412-263-1476).
Of the 23 officers who served with Kerry in Coastal Division 11, only one supports him for president. Two others are dead, and four want nothing to do with politics. The remaining 16 have declared him "Unfit for Command," the title of the book written by former Lt. John O'Neill, who took over Kerry's swift boat, PCF-94, when Kerry left Vietnam.
The Swifties charge Kerry didn't deserve two of the three purple hearts he was awarded, or either of his medals for valor, the silver star and the bronze star.
According to Kerry, his first taste of combat came on his first mission, on the night of Dec. 2, 1968. He was with two sailors in a Boston whaler on a night patrol. They saw sampans, presumably crewed by Viet Cong, unloading on a peninsula. They opened fire, and the Vietnamese ran for cover. In the "engagement," Kerry suffered a scratch on his arm from a piece of metal.
Kerry's account to his biographer, Douglas Brinkley, gives the impression that he was in command of the whaler. This was not so. Lt. William Schachte, later an admiral, was the officer in charge. Shachte said the Vietnamese never fired on the boat, and the sailors who were with Schachte and Kerry said they couldn't remember any return fire.
Shachte said Kerry's scratch was self-inflicted. He had fired an M-79 grenade launcher too close to the shore. It struck a rock, and a fragment of metal ricochete
