Michael Moore: I Will Bring Cameras to Florida to Monitor November Election

Filmmaker Michael Moore announces he is bringing his cameras to Florida in November to make sure there is what he called a "huge spotlight" on state election officials when voters go to the polls.

At a press conference in Boston yesterday, filmmaker Michael Moore announced he is bringing his cameras to Florida in November to make sure there is what he called a "huge spotlight" on state election officials when voters go to the polls. The director of "Fahrenheit 9/11" also said he plans to help pay for an "army of lawyers" who will be in target precincts ready to go to court if they spot any voting problems. He encouraged other independent filmmakers to join him in Florida.

Speaking of interviews, for those who missed Sam and JG's interview with W's econ professor at Harvard last week. Here it is.

http://s88172659.onlinehome.us/spockosbrain.html

From Yoshi Tsurumi interview July 16, 2004 about George W. Bush

"For example. One statement that he made still stuck with me. We were discussing how the United States Government should help the lower income group or people on the fixed pension to adjust themselves to the high energy costs during the oil crisis, to bring in the fairness into the US economic policies. And he raised the issues and he said, “People are poor because they are lazy.” Those are the lies. And he goes into ranting and all kinds of things that there are no racial discriminations in the United States because at the times the civil rights movement was still smoldering. "

In small type, on the back, it should say to contact your area extention agent (or Master Gardeners, who are their representatives) for the correct time to apply the stuff. If you do that, which 99% don't, the extention service will tell you to not apply it, or to only apply it the first two weeks of April, depending on where you live.

Even the ultra-Orthodox have some dispensations, and I know many of my fellow Reform Jews who have to work on the Sabbath. (If you want to play the game of literalism, Bart, slaves were urged by Paul to obey their masters.) As for Lieberman, he seems to be the Republican wing of the Democratic party.

One thing to remember. For Kerry and Edwards to have their greatest impact, they will need more support in Congress. So, remember your local candidates as well.

Will AAR relay one important speech without commercial?

Posted by: kio at July 29, 2004 08:38 PM

Why do they have to do it? Why not the stations that carry Rush, Savage or Hannity? Why does the one station that really needs the money have to forgo the commerical revenue. NPR should carry it full time. The commerical broadcast stations should be FORCED to care it. We gave them the broadcast frequencies and they have a responsibility to the people. Jesus H. Christ on a Cracker, we give them billions of dollars worth of frequencies the lest they can do is give us a few of the Scott Peterson trial hours!

The fairness doctrine was repealed during Reagan's era there is nothing for free.

I have been following the convention up here in Canada and as I flip around the TV dial I notice CNN spends more time taking to themselves rather than covering the events on stage.

I emailed CNN the following about their "coverage" of the convention...

"If you are going to cover the convention I suggest you turn your cameras on the events happening on stage. I've tuned into CNN and instead of seeing and hearing the speakers all I see are your "reporters" sitting around talking to themselves. You don't even have to be there. You could have stayed back in Atlanta and sat around the studio and done that. Why won't you put these speakers on air? Why are you affraid of the message they are putting forward?"

My secret hope for Kerry's speech: Obama gave him a few pointers and Kerry will put the image of him as a wooden speaker in the grave. Carl Tuckerson (Damn, I'm glad I spelled it with a T and not an F this time.) has to praise Kerry's speech. Franken believes in conversion. He thinks that if he quietly and kindly repeats the truth that, eventually, he will unearth the honest person beneath...a kind of erosion of the dumbass layer. He always keeps in mind that no matter how weird and off-the-wall a conservative's opinion is, the conservative is an American too.

Al and Jeanine are doing a great job but they are susceptible to "celebrity intoxication" even from right wing celebrities. They seem to think that these people are their "friends" because they share that rarefied air of celebrityhood. What they fail to realize is that these people are their "enemies!" If the order were to come down their right wing "friends" would obediently take them by the hand and lead them to a re-education camp or worse giving them one final air kiss before they pass through the gates.

The network stations do promote a certain kind of politics even though they may not do so explicitly. And there is Sunday morning you know. Lots and lots of right-wing thinktanks and pundits appear there.

There is something to be said for the idea that the profit motive is itself a problem for the network media. The only reason they can give for not covering the DNC is that they lack an audience -- but what they mean is they're unable to sell advertising for that kind of coverage. If television coverage of politics was publicly subsidized it would be much fairer and these media outlets would have no excuse to suppress ideas their advertisers would get upset about.

What is interesting is that they haven't lowered the standards for Kerry like they have with Bush.

"Well Brit, if George W. Bush doesn't soil himself tonight, his speech will be a home run!"

"Bush was able to string 3 sentences together while reading a teleprompter. He is another Winston Churchill!"

"Greta, everyone knows that Bush is not a good speaker, he has dyslexia, he has a hard time talking, he isn't a man of many long words. Shrill Dems say he is dumb, but isn't he really a man of the people. Gary Cooper and not Gary Hart?
John Wayne not John Wayne Gacy?"

I find it odd that no one so far in the media or in their convention speeches has pointed out the most glaring difference betwee Kerry/Edwards and Bush/Cheney--namely that the former have a demonstrable, life-long commitment to public service, while the later have a an equally clear and demonstrable record of serving themselves and their capitalist cronies. Even if you don't like Kerry, or agree w/his policies, you can't claim that he's in it for the money, whereas, that's about the best you can say about Dubya.

I would argue that Bush deliberately had his people lower expectations and the media went along with it. I read Ann Coulter's USA Today article and the editor's remarks. Frankly, it was very poor writing. It was just a disconnected stream of insults without any kind of context or flow or humor. I know that a lot of folks think that insulting characterizations are a form of humor... but they're not. Humor reveals the truth by clever turns of language and imagery. Coulter revealed nothing, expressed only her own vitriol.

A good film to see now is "Ridicule." It's a scathing political parody of the highest order, and very chilling in its way. The king's court in the film is much like the court of media sycophants we see today. The protagonist is very serious and earnest, trying to petition the king to save lives, and yet he is forced to play the games of the court.

Oh yeah! Ridicule, what a great film! I saw it five years ago and I'm still laughing about the opening scene...remember?

Of course, right-wing nuts don't really care about Americans which is why you don't care about the what the majority of this country actually thinks. The least important thing to the right wing: The American People!

Thanks for making my point!

Posted by: James M at July 29, 2004 09:08 PM

What they fail to realize is that these people are their "enemies!" If the order were to come down their right wing "friends" would obediently take them by the hand and lead them to a re-education camp or worse giving them one final air kiss before they pass through the gates.

Posted by: frngy at July 29, 2004 08:55 PM

again you are right... it's almost like they think the "popular kids" at school have finally accepted them when, actually, they are abusing them and stealing their airtime...

Posted by: Frankie at July 29, 2004 09:09 PM

"Ridicule" is a terrific movie. Anyone concerned about the nature of today's media should view it to learn of their methods and madness.

Posted by: frngy at July 29, 2004 09:09 PM

You know, I feel sorry for Nancy Pelosi because she had to follow Lieberman.
Lieberman brought everyone down and it was hard for Nancy to pick them up again. But she did start to get the people going.

Joe Biden and Wes Clark had the people going.
Then Lieberman. Blah!!!

Posted by: tonid at July 29, 2004 09:09 PM

Will in Chicago

That is exactly what I was saying, sorry if I wasn't clear. They (the Bush camp) LOWERED the expectations of Bush before the Gore debate.
"Bush is not a good debater. He is better one on one on leadership issues, not a Wonk."

They totally gave him a pass. And if anyone ever pointed it out, they would go on about, "Well, he's no Slick Willy. He's more of a man of few words"

Yeah, a man of a few words. "Bring it on. Misunderestimate. Stratigery."

Posted by: at July 29, 2004 09:09 PM

Carole King is singing "you've got a friend"
at the convention.

Bah.....I promised myself I would shut up, but.....

DAMN AAR SUITS......YOU SHOULD BE EATING THE COMMERCIALS FOR THE CONVENTION!

BAH, BAH, BAH, BAH!

The mentally ill coulter's traitorous drivel was Not Acceptable as writing for USA Today. It was rejected and she was fired from commenting on the DNC Convention for USA Today. She posted it on her website since it was completely rejected by USA Today.

In Contrast, Michael Moore was hired by USA Today to write commentary at the RNC Convention by them. hehehe...

What is the link to the film 'Ridicule'?

slurslee wrote:

Come on Danner, why sound so surprised? The vast majority of reporters don't report, they take dictation. Most have neither the talent nor the guts to be investigative reporters, which is what they'd have to be in order to report the truth--especially with this very secretive administration.

Posted by: adamo at July 29, 2004 09:13 PM

Katie Couric is a deeper person than most media folks. As pretty as she is she has no conceit about it, unlike Ann Coulter (who is likely very insecure about her appearance and hence overly concerned with appearances). And Katie has had life experiences that have produced in her an evident depth of character.

It takes a certain temperament to survive and thrive after a painful loss, and to remain an optimistic person. Katie has what it takes.

Bill O'Reilly has the wrong kind of temperament. He's even turned his blessed experience of fatherhood into another source of vitriol.

Not really, it had a lot to the gerrymandering tactics that the Repukes used to redistrict.

Don't worry, Dems will take back the house and Senate and you can spew invective at the people who are true patriots for the next four years!
Oh wait, that's what you do now!

Slurslee, much as you may like and admire Katie Couric, what business is it of hers how much money Michael Moore donates to charity? or when he's going to get new clothes? He is comfortable with who he is, and how he spends his money is his own business...

The supreme court has ruled in the Texas redistricting case that anytime a party takes control of a legislature it can redistrict, even without an intervening census, and there is no longer any significant restriction on gerrymandering.

Texas still has a majority of Democratic voters, gain a few seats here and there, and they can turn the redistricting applecart around. They redistrict every year now.

Payback can be a bitch

The C-SPAN ratings will be a cue to the networks to carry the RNC! Watch the networks (FOX esp) make some excuse about "because the people showed such interest in the DNC, we'll cover the RNC gave-togavel."

Hummm, I thought the gerrymandering you spoke of and which has increased for the right voters since the last election would prevent the loss of both isles. Your logic is difficult to follow, but I'll make note of it and check back with you on the 3rd of November. LOL

did anyone catch this article about michael moore in business week?

http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/jul2004/nf20040728_2965_db009.htm

esp. this quote:

"But Moore has a double standard about being duped about weapons of mass destruction. He defends John Kerry's vote to invade Iraq because the Democratic about-to-be-nominee like so many other Americans believed in the Commander-in-Chief. The press doesn't get that same pathetic pass."

the press should NOT got a pass on that--their JOB, as the Fourth Estate, is to be a watchdog on the other 3 estates: executive, judiciary and congressional... they are NOT supposed to be rubberstamping cheerleaders for the executive and military branch...

Posted by: Frankie at July 29, 2004 09:28 PM

Craig Sterling, I'd hope you could find a more creative solution, one that doesn't involve graphic violence of such a pedestrian and mundane tone. When dealing with conflict, you have to seek mutual goals and common ground. They want peace, you want peace. When every possible peaceful solution is exhausted, go ahead and drop an anvil om 'em, shove a giant lit firecracker up their ass, use a cannon or giant slingshot to shoot them into a wall - something, ANYTHING, besides that nimby homoerotic deadly man-head-sex thingy. That's way gay, dude.

Posted by: Dr.Know at July 29, 2004 09:36 PM

The right wing zealots here and throughout the land would find themselves quite comfortable in a one party fascist/corporate/theocratic state and would be delusional enough to still call the nation a "democracy!" Democracies demand a certain intellectual rigor and honesty and a commitment to the responsibility and service to the larger community beyond their immediate family. The extreme right wing is lacking in the pyschological mind set of a little "d" democrat which consists of optimism, inclusiveness, curiosity, and tolerance. Their mind set is one of fear, mistrust and a rabid faith in a cannabilistic social Darwinism.
