Depends on your conception of what extremism is...

I thought the post was a good one but as when I used the word "zealous" people vary widely on their comprehension of the words...

Using that example was fine for me and many others I assume but I fear the word extremism.

Always clarify your thoughts as much as you're able...You need to go the extra mile...pay the price with your suffering hands...give of what you are and what you know.

Zealous...yes we need this...to be this...to truly stand for what we believe in and to fight when necessary.

We need to be strong each and every one.

We need to take the places of those institutions that have failed us.

We need to do our duty to the benefit of humanity.

I ask myself daily how many of you will still be here after the election.

How many will still have the fire in their bellies to do what is necessary to save this planet and all that dwell on it?

How many?

The majority of americans are not aware of this...they think that he gave weapons to release them...play of words...poor choice arms for hostages...

Reagans scheme was arms to keep american hostages.

**U.S. President George W. Bush A Big Winner At World Stupidity Awards**

Nelson Wyatt, Canadian Press
Monday, July 26, 2004

MONTREAL (CP) - The November elections may still be ahead of him but U.S. President George W. Bush came out a big winner Friday - at the World Stupidity Awards.

Bush was a dominating presence at the second edition of the awards presented at the Just for Laughs comedy festival. Host Lewis Black, whose biting satire is a highlight of TV's The Daily Show, took pride in the recognition the United States received at the awards, saying: "we are the gold standard."

Black said the awards "celebrate the pros" and "perfection in idiocy" because real stupidity is hard work.

"It's easy to fall down a manhole, it's easy to put the candles too close to the drapes, it's easy to launch a military invasion of another country based on a few blurry satellite photos," he observed.

"This year my people, we scaled the Everest of stupidity and we stand upon its peak."

Bush took the Stupidest Man of the Year Award and for the second time in the history of the two-year-old awards won the Stupidity Award for Reckless Endangerment of the Planet.

That award was presented by Justin Trudeau, son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau. He got the biggest reaction of the night from females in the packed house, who hooted, whistled and yelled "yum" at him while he was on stage.

Bush didn't take the category alone, however, and tied with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The controversial Texan president shared in two other awards as the United States was noted for having the Stupidest Government of the Year.

"What was interesting about that is that the decision was made overwhelmingly by Americans who voted," said Albert Nerenberg, of the Main Organization Revealing Obvious Numbskulls which runs the awards.

Nominations and voting took place at the organization's online site, except for the lifetime achievement award which is settled by the judges.

The nominations were judged by experts in their fields - "a bunch of idiots" and overseen by the Academy for Recognizing Stupidity Everywher

Another thing that wasn't even investigated...

Sudden masive upturn in oil prices during the carter years...

You see after Nixon showed everyone what the republican party was made of they decided that they couldn't win unless they played dirty.

Certain republicans with ties to oil made a few other deals and screwed Carters economy up.

Hurt the U.S. people with the aid of another country to suit their political and financial ends.

THIS IS WHAT WE FIGHT

War Dog,
This is for you, who hates Jimmy Carter.
If you had met George W. in your early business career when you were struggling, and you had taken his investment advice, you would have been hosed. George would have laughed all of the way to Harken.
If you had met Jimmy Carter during your early busines career, he would have reseached your needs, carried your tab, and advised you to do this and not that.

Jimmy Carter saved his family peanut crop brokerage business by helping the growers to survive and make money. He forsook his hand-picked career as a Navy nuclear sub scientist and sailor.

Who is the capitalist with the social conscience, Jimmy or Dubya?

Do you want to know how big contributions from corporations and corporate officers? When visiting the vice president of our division before the 2000 election, I noticed a thank you letter from the RNC on his desk. I commented that he supported Bush. He said, not exactly. He told of being sent a letter from the CEO of the corporation recommending that he contribute to the Bush campaign. Being apolitical, he did nothing. A month or so later, he got a second letter noting that he still had not contributed to the Bush campaign. So, after reminding himself that this man could fire him at will, change the bonus he received, change the stock options that he might get, and affect any future promotions, he waited a whole ten seconds before getting out his checkbook.

I think that the Israeli peace movement does not get enough coverage. However, the situation with the security barrier is complex as the Israeli Supreme Court has declared. (The right to defense is legitimate, but I have a lot of reservations about Sharon's policies -- which have provided neither peace nor security -- and his route for the security barrier.) The occupation harms both sides -- from the Palestinians who suffer to the Israelis who live in fear. Mind you, there are fanatics on both sides who do not want peace. (See some of the settler leaders who view Rabin's assassin as a hero and Hamas for examples.)

Here is a story about an encouraging event thatinvolved Israeli and Palestinian peace activists. Palestinian Peace Now: http://www.jrep.com/Palaffairs/Article-0.html

War Dog, what about Reagan's negotiations during the 1980 elections with Iran. I recall quite a few stories about that in the early 1980s. Also, Carter did mount a rescue mission. If it had worked, Ronald Reagan might have spent the 1980s on the rubber chicken circuit.

You can stop screaming now you ignorant nickless twit.

I repeat the war was not authorized unless W met the conditions of the agreement.

One of the conditions was that he go back to the U.N. and get a multilateral agreement...

He couldn't get one...everyone knew that he couldn't get one...

What everyone didn't expect was a president going against the will of the people, of congress and then being protected by the lackeys in the house and senate.

I know one man that is a liar and another is honest. I don't know which is which do I distrust both. Which makes the liar very happy.

You serve evil when you allow yourself to remain ignorant of the truth.

Oh, the South sucks. Why, I don't see why I should stay here and help change the situation. Southern whites are stupid, and would never permit blacks to have rights. It's impossible to radically change the government that much, I've read many, many books which informed me of the impossibility of this systemic change.

I know, I'll move to the North and live with people with my values and then make fun of the dumb ones elsewhere.

I mean, what good could it do to stay in the South and fight for civil rights?

What? They did? How did they do that? Do I get to still claim that I'm superior for leaving?

The thing I like about the National Urban League is you believe in the future of the African American community. You've got this great faith that the future is going to be better, and I share that. That's what I'm here to talk about. I believe the same thing.

I believe this country can and will be a place of opportunity and hope for every single citizen. It's not a given; there's work to be done. But it's a goal, and it's an important goal.

I love America.

America has the capacity to be the greatest force for freedom this world has ever seen. When Pres. Clinton sent our troops out to defend the Bosian Muslims, I can honestly say that I have never been more proud of my country's foreign policy. It was an unqualified good. Admittedly, these last 3 1/2 years have been tough but I think we are turning the corner.

Americans have seen how devastating the right wingers are and mobilizing to stop them.

America is its people as well as its ideals. Our people sometimes waver but never our principles. We are a country dedicated to freedom and I am dedicated to those ideals.

As a descendant of America's slaves, I can not hate my country. After this nation has come so far, it is not possible that I should give up on it. My mother's generation did not give up... neither should you.

Mel, What I was asking was a rhetorical question. Authentic Christianinty is a subversive religion that undercuts totalitariansim by being provocative with ethics, as MLK said. Authentic Christianity is patterning your life after the historical Jesus as the Dhali Lama does. Authentic Christianity means walking the talk.

I am not a person of faith, but I truely appriciate that bhuddists do not have a history of violent oppression. Which cannot be said of the Abramic religions.

Posted by: reedabook at July 26, 2004 09:55 PM

I don't care what party you're in, what city you live in, or what state you're from, the goal has got to be -- America has got to be an hospitable, hopeful place for every single citizen.

That's what I believe.

That's kind of the heart of what they call compassionate conservatism, that the American experience must be alive and viable for everyone, and that government has a role to help people have the tools so they can help themselves.

See,
I believe in the human spirit;
I believe if people have the opportunity and the ability, they will achieve their God-given talents.

That's what I believe.

Darrell-I respectfully disagree. I think a lot of the population in the US will vote the way Fox News or Lee Greenwood tells them to, because for a lot of people out there, the scariest thing in the world is to make an informed decision that you have to take responsibility for.

Those people, who have been taught not to question authority, to be suspicious of anyone who is "well-read", and to follow the crowd because it's safer in a herd, is the type of person that Dave The Neo-Con needs to keep misinformed.

Thanx for talking about the Israeli/Palestinian problem. It is time to resolve the issue and get a country for the Palestinians (which the U.N. gave them in 1948). If it takes a wall, let Sharon have his damned wall. But the wall has to be along the pre-1967 borders. If Israel withdraws and the Palestinians are allowed to do business with their Arab neighbors, they could develop an economic infrastructure independent of Israel. Right now Israel does everything it can to depress an independent Palestinian economy (bulldozing orange groves, holding trucks with fresh produce at the check points until the goods are spoiled). Unless we send in U.N. troops, two separate states are necessary.

No, I wasn't knocking Southerners. Remember, it wasn't just black Southerners and white Northerners who fought for civil rights in the South. There were white Southerners who fought for what was right, too.

And as a Southerner, I can say that Southerners tend to only put up with bullies for so long, and that mainly because they don't think it's proper to make a ruckus, unless you absolutely have to.

But the Republican morons have been trying to bully everyone since 2000, and Southerners who aren't Republicans (Democrats or not) are tired of it.

Let me tell you what I've heard a *lot*, from black and white Southerners: "Just who in hell does he think he is to say whether or not I'm a patriot? Hell if I'll let him judge me." Now that's a good ol' Southernism that we could use.

katchi,

The Road Map and various independent peace initiatives do recognize the need for separate states, and allow for negotiation of borders. The left and the right in Israel debate about the security barrier and where it should be. Ironically, Sharon initially opposed the barrier, which was a left-wing proposal to put on the Green Line.(Most parties admit there may be a need to adjust the borders as the 1948-1967 "borders" were actually armistice lines. Israel lacks permanent borders.) Here is one peace initiative you might want to look at. The People's Voice: http://www.mifkad.org.il/eng/default.asp and take a look at the Geneva Accords: http://www.mideastweb.org/geneva1.htm Both proposals allow for a land swap in some sensitive areas. The problem, as I see it, is the lack of leadership committed to peace on both sides.

If you Lucy cannot tell the difference between the sermon on the mount and the words of Jerry Fallwell and Pat Robertson, I don't know what to tell you. If you have been to a Black Baptist church and cannot tell the difference between that and a southern baptist church, I don't know what to say. Christianity at its best comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable. White Christianity, as expressed by the religious right is just the opposite. It comforts the comfortable and afflicts the afflicted and springs from Calvinist (you know you are going to heaven because you are rich) morality. Bhuddism's central tennant is that suffering is universal and it is our role in life to lessen the suffering of others. If you do not see the Christian gospel in that teaching, I don't know what to say. Religion can either be used to support the heirarchy or to call us to behave as Christ behaved. "Foxes have holes, bird have nests, but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head. It is more likely that a camel should pass through the eye of a needle that a rich man should enter the kingdom of heaven. If a man would follow me and has two coats sell one give the money to the poor and follow me."

"France has unemployment at 11%. We are at full employment."

And a higher standard of living. We are not at full employment. Many people are working two jobs just to survive. We're at 6.7% unemployemnt with estimates gonig higher if you account for people no longer looking for work...and another 4-5% on top of 6.7% and you get the true number.
"
There shouldn’t be a lack of education-Didn't Bill Clinton take care of this in the 90's?"

Clinton made some improvements much to the dismay and constant foot dragging of your party whom immediately erased the gains when they took total control of the goverment.

"I don't understand your to old to young argument?"

You asked why people don't work in the context of being poor. Some people simply can not work but I will note that your party has historically and recently headed the push to lower the working age and raise the retirement age.

"Many companies are coming to the US and building factories."

Over 60% of the corporations in this country do not even pay taxes or contribute to the common good at all. Even fewer pay taxes now that your party has given them 3 and working on the 4th tax break in 3 years....can you say mega million dollar leeches?

"I like many Republicans are against CEO's making outlandish salaries. This is the fault of the share holders and board of directors. If you've noticed most CEO salaries are coming down."

No this is the fault of deregulation and guess who led that charge. There used to be capsto maximum a ceo could make in comparison to the workers.

Thank you Ronald Reagan.

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush, for the second time in two months, took a tumble on his mountain bike while riding on his Texas ranch, a White House spokeswoman said on Monday.

``During an 18-mile ride, as bikers often do, the president took a minor spill and scraped his knee,'' spokeswoman Claire Buchan said. She said the president did not require medical attention after the spill.

i think amy was right that it's not completley right to just attack bush. i think cristism is important, but it's almost too easy at this point. that's where liberals (liberacies) get in trouble...we sometimes are really great at screaming about what we hate but coming up with our own cases for things we fall short...not always...and i'm not saying you are,...don't misunderstand me...
and for clinton...yes, obviously he is better than bush and more articulate and the rest of it...of course...but again...that's too easy...let's please not forget that he is pretty evil himself sometimes...we can't marginalize ourselves...better isn't always good...just better..
and fuck man, i think you guys are doing an amazing amazing job.,..really but i'm just saying...we can't lower ourselves to their level...you're totally and fully capable of speaking from your own platform...you have the resources you know this stuff (adderall induced or not)...

Thanx for the links to those who want peace in Israel/Palestine. I'm really afraid it's beyond a sane, negotiated peace. I've watched this situation since 1975, and it's getting worse. The only progress is Israeli expansion into and control of the occupied territories. No solution is really fair to the Palestinians. No solution seems to satisfy the Israeli right wing.

"America's voices for peace refuse to be locked in a razor wire cage"

"However, organisers of the convention have said protesters can gather only in a large wire cage that has been built under Boston's elevated train tracks. It has one entrance and one exit, and is topped by razor wire. Naturally, the protesters are protesting. Late last night they made their views known in silence - they left the cage empty. They won't go in there. It resembles an internment camp and is an affront to free speech, they say."

While it's the break, I'll do my mini-review of the convention coverage during the Majority Report. Amazing speeches by Carter and Bill & Hillary Clinton. Amy Goodman was a good guest, brought things to the table that no one else was.
Weakest moment? I know they're supposed to be funny but if Al Franken's interviews with delegates are the only coverage the delegates are going to get, I'd prefer to hear more from them and less from Al. The speakers are great, but don't fall into the usual trap of thinking they are the stars, the people are the stars of the convention. (If the networks got that, they'd still be covering this extensively in prime time.)
Biggest and best suprise? The interview Al did with Chip Carter. Truly a stand out moment.
Hope Katrina's on tomorrow night. (And that they speak with Maxine since she wasn't on Friday.)

By any measure...

Senator/Vice President Al Gore, President Jimmy Carter, Senator Hillary Clinton and the last elected president Bill Clinton truly hit their heartfelt meaningful speech's out of the park.

What a Launch Tonight...

Right on, theresa! I think we should make them all take a more personal role in rebuilding the Middle East. We can start by putting them in military fatigues, and shipping each and every one of their asses to Iraq. I'd love to see Bill Kristol carry a gun, scared shitless, patrolling the streets of Fallujah. "Do you think it was a good idea, Bill? Do ya...punk?!"

Wolf Blitzer???

C-Span, dude! No commentary!

Clinton's speech was more than brilliant! The Republicans are growing smaller and smaller right before the eyes of the American public. They're melting like the wicked witch in the wizard of OZ. Soon Gingrich, O'lielly, Hannity, DeLie, Cheney, Rumsfield, et al will be nothing more than a black grease stain on the floor.

Ok, semi-automatic. I hadn't read much about the ban but I just looked it up. A semi-automatic UZI can fire 30 rounds in five seconds compared to an automatic UZI firing them in just under two seconds. This is not a big difference to me, who would only be on the recieving end of any such fire. The other parts of the ban detail needless accesories found on assault weapons such as flash suppressors and bayonet attachments. Thanks for the freedoms, but no thanks. I have no interest in assault.

What goods? 4 hijacked airliners instead of OBL? How many times did Clinton and risk averse Berger pass OBL up again? It's hard to keep count.
