Military confirms soldier injured during training at Guantanamo
By BRETT BARROUQUERE
Associated Press Writer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Army confirmed Tuesday that a former military police officer was injured while posing as a prisoner during a training session at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, last year.
But Maj. Laurie Arellano, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Southern Command in Miami, said Spc. Sean Baker’s medical discharge last month was not related to the head injury he received during training at the detention center, where the U.S. government is holding suspected terrorists. She declined to elaborate, citing medical privacy laws.
Arellano’s comments came a day after Baker said he posed as an uncooperative prisoner and was beaten so badly by four U.S. soldiers that he suffered a traumatic brain injury, requiring a medical discharge.
Baker, of Georgetown, said the soldiers only stopped beating him when they realized he might be American.
Baker was with the 438th Military Police Company when the unit was deployed to Guantanamo last year. Officials said the injury occurred when he volunteered to take part in a training exercise for another unit — the 303rd Military Police Company based in Jackson, Mich.
Arellano said Baker was taken to the military hospital on the base, where a medical exam and brain scan cleared him to return to duty.
A few months later, Baker was sent to Walter Reed Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va., for an unrelated “medical consultation,” Arellano said. He stayed at Walter Reed until his discharge from the military in April, she said.
Attempts to reach Baker Tuesday were unsuccessful.
Several states once seen as "solidly" behind Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, including Michigan and New Jersey, have turned into battlegrounds where President Bush is a serious contender.
Months ago, Michigan and New Jersey, which are heavily unionized and voted for Al Gore in 2000, were considered beyond Mr. Bush's reach. Now, despite the president's falling national approval rating for his handling of the Iraq war, pollsters say the economic recovery and perception of the president as a strong leader have turned both states in his direction.

I have a few minor questions to the Majority Report staff. First, at the beginning of your show, does the announcer say "the truth doesn't stand a chance"? Just what is that supposed to mean? Second, with regard to the ad in which the female voice says that Article 2 of the Constitution requires "honorable conduct" of the President at all times, and concludes that therefore he is under oath when delivering the "State of the Union" - it is not immediately obvious to me how that conclusion would follow. At any rate, I don't find the referenced phrase in the first place??? What is up with that? Lastly, the Shell Oil ads that claim how good the company is with the environment are at the very least questionable.

Posted by: jojo at May 25, 2004 09:29 PMP2OG-ccording to a classified document prepared for Rumsfeld by his Defense Science Board, the new organization--the "Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group (P2OG)"--will carry out secret missions designed to "stimulate reactions" among terrorist groups, provoking them into committing violent acts which would then expose them to "counterattack" by U.S. forces.
In other words--and let's say this plainly, clearly and soberly, so that no one can mistake the intention of Rumsfeld's plan--the United States government is planning to use "cover and deception" and secret military operations to provoke murderous terrorist attacks on innocent people. Let's say it again: Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush and the other members of the unelected regime in Washington plan to deliberately foment the murder of innocent people--your family, your friends, your lovers, you--in order to further their geopolitical ambitions.

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/health_and_medical/disorders/wernicke-korsakoff.htm
From the web site above:
What is Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome?
Wernicke's encephalopathy is a degenerative brain disorder caused by the lack of thiamine (vitamin B1). It may result from alcohol abuse, dietary deficiencies, prolonged vomiting, eating disorders, or the effects of chemotherapy. Symptoms include mental confusion, vision impairment, stupor, coma, hypothermia, hypotension, and ataxia. Korsakoff's amnesic syndrome-a memory disorder-also results from a deficiency of thiamine, and is associated with alcoholism. The heart, vascular, and nervous system are involved. Symptoms include amnesia, confabulation, attention deficit, disorientation, and vision impairment. The main features of Korsakoff’s amnesic syndrome are the impairments in acquiring new information or establishing new memories, and in retrieving previous memories. Although Wernicke’s and Korsakoff’s may appear to be two different disorders, they are generally considered to be different stages of the same disorder, which is called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Wernicke’s encephalopathy represents the “acute” phase of the disorder, and Korsakoff’s amnesic syndrome represents the "chronic" phase. :0

I've seen a lot of film footage of GW in his thirties, and I noted how relatively articulate he was. The comparison to present-day was astounding.
The cognitive deficits related to Wernicke-Korsakoff are strikingly similar to those of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), though, especially word-finding problems, difficulty pronouncing words, lapses of memory, brief periods of confusion (I've got MS, it sucks.)
So maybe Bush has MS, like President Bartlet on The West Wing. That's where the similarities end ... Martin Sheen is more of a President than GW.

Bush’s Favorite Show Tunes
(in case you have some time to fill at the end)
Some actual lyrics:
I am the very model of modern US president,
I cannot eat a pretzel or ride bikes without an incident.
Meet me in Saint Abu Ghraib, meet me if you care,
Don't tell me you're gettin' tortured, anyplace but there.
Some titles didn’t need changing:
I Won't Grow Up
If I Only Had A Brain
Send in the Clowns
A couple that need some ‘splainin’
Cheney sings "There Are No Strings On Me," while Bush lip synchs
Bush solo about a second term: "This Nearly Was Mine!"
And, the puns:
Everything's Coming Up Bodies
I Just Bombed The Street Where You Live
How Do You Solve A Problem, Condoleeza
You Can't Get Saddam With A Gun
Booze Glorious Booze
I Say Torture, You Say Abuse
I'm Just A Country That Can't Say No
What I Did For Money
Tragedy Tonight
Gonna Wash Saddam Right Outta My Hair
Chalabi With The Fringe On Top
Bombmaker, Bombmaker
How To Succeed In Torture Without Really Trying
Hello Young Prisoners
Open A New Prison
You've Got Trouble, Right Here In Abu-Grumb
See me, Feel me, Vote for me
The Bombs In Spain Blow Mainly Railroad Trains
I Could Have Bombed All Night
Get Me To Baghdad On Time
I've Grown Accustomed To Disgrace
The Shia And The Suni Should Be Friends
Luck Be A Cheney Tonight
On A Clear Day You Can Lie Forever
I've Got Evil To Do
Mine Every Mountain
Since I Am A Rich Man
The Music Of The Bombing In The Night
Don’t Cry for Me Haliburton
Don't Rain On My Air-Raid

Posted by: thehighercritic at May 25, 2004 09:44 PMI know this quote has made the rounds lately, but let me recall, one more time, words from the Nuremberg trial. No, not Hermann Goering, commander of the Luftwaffe, who said, before being sentenced to death, "The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." (Smart guy, that Goering. He must have written some books before he was hanged, because Bush, Rumsfeld, and the whole cabal running this country into the ditch today are obviously fervent disciples of Mr. Goering's philosophy.)

I think it's a way of giving her a schtick and helps listeners relate to her about something.
She has stated over and over that her dream has been to take her show national. She feels it's her mission in life to bring her Democrat/Liberal message to the nation. I think she's determined to get this to work. IMHO, the whining is a device used by tons of performers to bring the listener to their side. Helps create loyalty.

Supreme Court Suspends Election,
'equal protection' problem with voting
Each State uses different voting machines and procedures, potentially exposing George Bush to the same loss of equal protection as allowing the Florida votes to be counted in 2000. Therefore the office of President will be awarded by the court to George W. Bush.
Individual States are permitted to allow voting to occur, but under no circumstances shall there be any counting of votes.
The Court rules that the 14th Amendment principle of equal protection when used in the context of elections only applies to the person of George W. Bush. It does not apply to the voters or any other candidates. Just as in 2000.

Bush is trying the same trick again. He is trying to justify his failed and unnecessary war in Iraq by parading, once again, the corpses of those murdered by Osama bin Laden and his followers in New York, Washington and Bali. The shamelessness of George W. Bush is matched only by his contempt for the intelligence of the American people.
He is going by his intelligence. Judges all by that.

Terrorists planning summer attack
-by Curt Anderson
May 25, 2004 | WASHINGTON (AP) --
U.S. officials have obtained new intelligence deemed highly credible indicating al-Qaida or other terrorists are in the United States and preparing to launch a major attack this summer, The Associated Press has learned.
The intelligence does not include a time, place or method of attack but is among the most disturbing received by the government since the attacks of Sept. 11,
2001, according to a senior federal counterterrorism official who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday.
Of most concern, the official said, is that terrorists may possess and use a chemical, biological or radiological weapon that could cause much more damage and casualties than a conventional bomb.
"There is clearly a steady drumbeat of information that they are going to attack and hit us hard," said the official, who described the intelligence as highly credible.
Posted by: JBklyn at May 25, 2004 10:00 PMthis is NOT a democrat
Former Democratic Mayor Ed Koch will serve as chairman of a drive to attract 8,000 volunteers to aid visitors during the Republican National Convention this summer.
The volunteer drive will feature an advertising campaign in newspapers and on billboards with the tag "Be a part of it," a line from the song "New York, New York."
Asked whether recruiting GOP convention volunteers might be difficult in a city in which Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 5-1 ratio, Koch and Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried, with varying degrees of success, to minimize the convention's political significance.
"It's nonpolitical from my vantage point, even though what's happening is one of the most political of events," said Koch, who earlier this year crossed party lines to endorse President Bush for re-election.

eg. a parfume advertisement may be tested in 'sub urban women 30-40K income focus group before being release to public.

Posted by: jojo at May 25, 2004 10:02 PMterry, I probably shouldn't post it here, but Randi has ended up being my favorite show.
Posted by: Lucky Maria at May 25, 2004 10:02 PMRandi won me over when i heard a little bit of the interview with Nader on day 1. man, that was great.
Posted by: mpalacio1 at May 25, 2004 10:03 PMThehighercritic, how about Drea De Matteo (Adriana from the Sopranos) to be Randi's replacement? She's available (as anyone who saw Sunday's episode knows). :)
....and what about the people who DIDn't see the episode, you bastard?
Randi sets up traps for them, they stumble ignorantly into them, and she rips them to shreds. Kind of fun huh?
Posted by: terry wilke at May 25, 2004 10:03 PMWell, the guys who fired the shell didn't know it had sarin before, they sure as hell know now.
Posted by: Freship at May 25, 2004 10:04 PMnichole - what shows do you like on Air America? Do you listen to any others?
LM
Posted by: Lucky Maria at May 25, 2004 10:04 PMThe commercials are simple... Air America is the other side of the political coin that is flipped by the corporate oligarcy.
At Franklin and Janeane make me laugh.
Posted by: Adam Weishaupt at May 25, 2004 10:04 PMsorry, i don't have a tv (just a big monitor for movies). i swear i'm not a snob about it, just bored with it.
how about meryl streep in the randi rhodes story? blair butler, maybe?
david paymer as al franken...
Posted by: thehighercritic at May 25, 2004 10:05 PMi'm a liberal and i find your show excruciatingly annoying. all you guys do is shout over each other and constantly interrupting each other while attempting the most stupid intellectually condescending humor, never letting each other finish your sentences or points. i think you show would be so much better with just one of you and not two of you. it's a terrible terrible format and the sounds of your voices is extremely nasally and whiny and annoying. get rid of one of you and get rid of the constant interrupting, it gets you nowhere in your efforts to make your points and makes your show extremely hard to follow.
p.s. i also think it's weird that you have commercials from shell oil company, the navy, and drug companies. what's up with that????

Nichole, this isn't NPR. We LIKE the way the show is. Perhaps you might want to listen to another show if this bothers you...
Posted by: ITBearMI at May 25, 2004 10:05 PMNovokane, Adriana was whacked by Silvio (Stephen Van Zandt from the E Street Band) after it was discovered that she was informing on the family to the FBI. Sorry for those left in the dark. :)
Posted by: Jdog at May 25, 2004 10:05 PMI got no problem with AAR running Shell commercials. Let's get as much of their windfall profits as we can! Same for the fake diet drugs.
Posted by: nmark at May 25, 2004 10:05 PMdefinitely a repuke trait
The cabby, Carl Essel, was fuming mad yesterday after Koch's bodyguard unintentionally injured a cyclist as he was getting out of a cab - and, before the cops showed up, the former mayor and his escort took off, the hack said.
"He saw the accident. He ignored it," Essel told The Post. "I thought a former mayor would care."

Posted by: Novakane at May 25, 2004 10:06 PMNot only did Koch cross party lines to endorse Bush, he also endorsed Republican Michael Bloomberg over the progressive Mark Green.
What a jerk!!!!

Posted by: petemoon at May 25, 2004 10:07 PMMy state (Nebraska) is very, very conservative. It's a pleasure to listen to AirAmerica on the web. I like Al & Katherine, I like Janeane and Sam, but Randi is my favorite. Great voice... unbelievably sharp wit... and she has no problem ringing bullshit. It's no surprise she kicked Rush's ass down in Florida...
I hope these comments on the blog are rumors and nothing more...
Posted by: coondog at May 25, 2004 10:07 PMI'm so sorry (sincerely). I thought you wanted to know, Novokane. :( I sincerely apologize. You should still watch the episode though. It's one of the best I've ever seen.

Posted by: Lucky Maria at May 25, 2004 10:08 PMNichole, these AAR folks are not conventional liberals. They are hate driven nasty people.
Posted by: bcw at May 25, 2004 10:09 PMPerceived violence does not sell well with middle america and independants. As a former SDSer, I'm certain that a very large anti-war demonstration in NY City during the Republican convention carries a high risk of perceived violence broadcast to middle america. This carries the risk of galvanizing and freezing middle american support for GW - a bad thing for Kerry in November.

No they're not. They're just making up for all the years of Right-Wing talk media...
Posted by: ITBearMI at May 25, 2004 10:09 PMJaneane, I don't know why you keep insisting Brooks is soooo smart. Unless you actually thought Bobos was clever. Personally, I don't see it. On the other hand, as I keep saying, the guy is definitely a master ironist. I find reading him fun, if you assume that everything he writes is tongue-in-cheek.
As for colonoscopies: My favorite part is the air
bubble part. What's yours?
So next time Americans die here in the US it won't be the fault of Islamic terrorists it will be because someone put panties on the head of an Iraqi prisoner.
This is the type of analysis that guarentees AAR will continue its record growth.

Posted by: Adam Weishaupt at May 25, 2004 10:12 PMPEACE IN, I saw an interview with Avi Rubin on TechTV a few months ago. The guy had a good demonstration on how voting machines can be hacked. I think he'd be a good guest here. A clip of the TechTV interview can be found on this page:

I thought i heard her yell "Jacques deMolay will be avenged!!!"
Posted by: Adam Kadmon at May 25, 2004 10:17 PMWhy do right wing leaning trolls keep turning up here to tell people how bad this show is? That's the equivalent of going into a bar where everyone's having a good time, and saying in a really lous and abnoxious voice "I hate it here! This music sucks! You guys are all jerks!" A guy like that is quickly going to gain a reputation for being a dick. You don't like it, go to the sports bar down the other end of the street. The one with the big screen TV and the pinkfaced, rollnecked crackers in Penney shirts.
Posted by: deadeyed at May 25, 2004 10:17 PMWe thought, maybe so. Now we know. Sam admires Janeane's cans.
Posted by: ted at May 25, 2004 10:18 PM"loud and obnoxious," what I was trying to say.

To find the answer to your query, change the verb "being" to "having."
Posted by: Adamo at May 25, 2004 10:20 PMI think - or like to think - that Randi is faking - or exaggerating - her iritation most of the time. She's a radio pro, and knows what makes radio fun to listen to - pissed off hosts. So I imagine she focuses on the little things that irritate her most - Franken's smarmy smugness, and exclusion from the publicity machine. Her grievances may be legit - but blown up a bit. Sam and janeane, however - there's no doubt that the anger is genuine. Sometimes it's over the top, but the honesty of majority report is what makes it unique to air america - there's so little scripting here. Randi is rough, and fun, and smart. She wouldn't go. She's the backbone.
