Posted by: jason in seattle at May 25, 2004 06:24 PMCelticman run away? I wanna discuss his link between Langston Hughes, Kerry and Communist pamphlets some more. Come on Celticman! Come out and play!
The International Workers Order (IWO) actually was an officially cited affiliate of the Communist Party, just like Celticman said. Wanna know who did the "citing"? Isn't that an odd word? Would the party itself use such a word to describe an organization with which it agreed in principal? No. But Senator Joseph McCarthy would.
That's right, boys and girls. Celtic takes us back to a time when the only place where most people ever heard of an organization called the International Workers Order was in the hearing rooms where McCarthy subpoenaed American after American to appear before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Many members of the International Workers Order were jailed in horrible conditions while waiting for McCarthy to allow them to "testify".
So Celtic, you've info-surfed yourself right into a small quandry here. Do you support the brand of American Freedom and Justice disposed by old Senator Joseph McCarthy? Surely you're not that much of a reactionary dickweed, are you? Ann Coulter does. Ann Coulter is.
Folks, whenever conservatives try to make you ashamed of something, make sure its something you should be ashamed of. Most of the time, the only shame is theirs.

Sources inside and close to the New York Times say that the newspaper is preparing an "Editors' Note" that will reassess its pre-Iraq War coverage, particularly its coverage of weapons of mass destruction. The note is said to address the reporting failures of Times staffers, including Judith Miller, and could be published as early as tomorrow (Wednesday, May 26).

Fish,
On the WABC morning show, Curtis & Kuby had Hannity on a guest. Liberal attorney Ron Kuby asked Hannity is there was any number of GI deaths or civilian deaths that would make him admit that the war was a mistake. Hannity wasn't man enough to answer.
How arrogant do you have to be to not even entertain the idea that you might be wrong about something.

Posted by: Emily in Virginia Beach at May 25, 2004 06:44 PMWe all know how Bush butchers the english language, so everyone just laughed away his inability to say Abu Ghraib. Everytime he said it he got it wrong though he got closer with each try. There may be more to it than his inability to speak. I believe it was the first time he said Abu Ghraib in Monday night's speach. If you listen it sounds like he was going to say Abu G' Rape and he tried to catch himself. I can see these jokers sitting around making fun of what was going on in the prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan, calling the prisons names like "Abu Grab Me" and "Abu G' Rape". My theory is that he was so used to doing this that he slipped up on Monday night.
Another thing I am not sure if anyone caught was Condi's slip (Freudian Style). A perceptive friend of mine saw the unmistakable body language a long time ago. Then he saw Aaron McGruder pick the story up in The Boondocks comic strip starting on May 17th (See the following link: http://www.ucomics.com/boondocks/2004/05/17/).
Then this story in New York Magazine:
Political Conversation: Condi’s Slip
A pressing issue of dinner-party etiquette is vexing Washington, according to a story now making the D.C. rounds: How should you react when your guest, in this case national-security adviser Condoleezza Rice, makes a poignant faux pas? At a recent dinner party hosted by New York Times D.C. bureau chief Philip Taubman and his wife, Times reporter Felicity Barringer, and attended by Arthur Sulzberger Jr., Maureen Dowd, Steven Weisman, and Elisabeth Bumiller, Rice was reportedly overheard saying, “As I was telling my husb—” and then stopping herself abruptly, before saying, “As I was telling President Bush.” Jaws dropped, but a guest says the slip by the unmarried politician, who spends weekends with the president and his wife, seemed more psychologically telling than incriminating. Nobody thinks Bush and Rice are actually an item. A National Security Council spokesman laughed and said, “No comment.”

Sad as it is, this story would be the death blow for the administration but poetic justice after Clinton. Thousands upon thousands dead from lies but a sex scandal would do more damage.

Langston Hughes (1902 - 1967)
Born in Joplin, Missouri, James Langston Hughes was a member of an abolitionist family. He was the great-great-grandson of Charles Henry Langston, brother of John Mercer Langston, who was the first Black American to be elected to public office, in 1855. Hughes attended Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio, but began writing poetry in the eighth grade, and was selected as Class Poet. His father didn't think he would be able to make a living at writing, and encouraged him to pursue a more practical career. He paid his son's tuition to Columbia University on the grounds he study engineering. After a short time, Langston dropped out of the program with a B+ average; all the while he continued writing poetry. His first published poem was also one of his most famous, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers", and it appeared in Brownie's Book. Later, his poems, short plays, essays and short stories appeared in the NAACP publication Crisis Magazine and in Opportunity Magazine and other publications.
One of Hughes' finest essays appeared in the Nation in 1926, entitled "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain". It spoke of Black writers and poets, "who would surrender racial pride in the name of a false integration," where a talented Black writer would prefer to be considered a poet, not a Black poet, which to Hughes meant he subconsciously wanted to write like a white poet. Hughes argued, "no great poet has ever been afraid of being himself." He wrote in this essay, "We younger Negro artists now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they aren't, it doesn't matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too... If colored people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, their displeasure doesn't matter either. We build our temples for tomorrow, as strong as we know how and we stand on the top of the mountain, free within ourselves."
Posted by: Sunshine Jim at May 25, 2004 06:53 PMThe smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum - even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate.
Noam Chomsky
Hannity came back at Kuby with this argument:
"Ok, let's say we didn't take out Sadaam and in three years he attacks us. Would you then say that we should've taken him out?"
So I guess we should send soldiers to their deaths every time Hannity comes up with some far fetched hypothetical.
The man has zero shame.

If you can, sign up for Friday early afternoon. The local news is likely to be there covering the movie's opening!
We'll give you options for exact times and locations the week before Memorial Day. You can change your sign up then if your plans change.

streaming using shoutcast is very expensive computationally. Plus Real is helping AAR stream, otherwise AAR will never be heard beyond a smidgen of radio market.
You could also help recording and archieving AAR broadcast.

On Korsakoff: Bingo, Long Term Drinking is cause...
What causes Korsakoff's syndrome?
Korsakoff's syndrome is caused by lack of thiamine (vitamin B1), which affects the brain and nervous system. Excessive use of alcohol is often the cause of thiamine deficiency. This is because:
Many heavy drinkers have poor eating habits. Their nutrition is inadequate and will not contain essential vitamins.
Alcohol can inflame the stomach lining and impede the body's ability to absorb the key vitamins it receives.
