The Rev or a great spiritual speaker would make a great weekly addition if not to only show conservatives that liberals can be spiritual but more important than optics is that their spiritual message is so greatly needed in this world of strife.

"No More BU** SH**" bumper sticker available here:
Download this zip file http://www.confuddled.com/images/no-more.zip and unzip it. Inside will be two .tif files -- just print the one you prefer, landscape, and cut out and stick on your bumper. If you have a color printer, great! Just remember to coat it with a light layer of clear gloss paint so that the ink won't run in the rain if you print it on a color inkjet printer.
Prints out great, landscape, on 8.5" x 11" paper, or just print it out on a full-sheet size stick on label. Hope you enjoy it--I had fun making it!

Nah if Al Quaida wins they will target young hoodlum republicans and the whole country will be cheering them on.
"There's David Frum whack that little wimp boy."
"There's Rush take his drugs away and watch the little man squirm like a pig in heat and then whack him and whack him good."
The next reality show- show Al Quaida going after young republicans.

Agreed. And for humanity, in general.

Again back to music in Chicago! I know overnight is a rebroadcasted and I will sleep some but I really hope that morning sedition comes on instead of the same music repeating over and over again.
I have faith that things will eventualy get settled but this is driving me crazy...
How about getting mike malloy to do an overnight show, or at least just be a guest from time to time?

Regarding posts on earlier threads on how to appeal to a wider audience:
The first time I saw JG was on "Star Search." She made a joke that referenced The Replacements, which was amazing cuz I knew that only a small percentage of people even knew who they were at the time and likely very few of them watched "Star Search". I felt a bond with this person. As her popularity grew I came across many people who felt a similar bond toward her for whatever reasons they had. She seems more genuine than most celebrities because she opens up about herself. I believe a lot of people have a sense that they "know" her.
My suggestion is that she not be affraid to talk about things that are not directly political. Her take on pop culture is always accurate, funny and through her observations she can make a more effective polical statement than simply getting pissed about whatever dumb or evil shit the repugs are up to. Her perspective and ability to articulate that perspective is what makes her unique and worthy of attention.
As the Replacements marched toward oblivion, Westerberg's lyrics became less personal and more generalized and as a result the songs did not resonate on the later records the way they did on the records through "Pleased to Meet Me." I didn't listen to the Replacements because they were a punk band but because I related to their perspective. That's what made them so important to me.
Point being, I don't really tune into Majority Report for a liberal point of view, I tune in for Janeane's point of view, that happens to be liberal. USE ALL THE GIFTS AT YOUR DISPOSAL !!

I am so jealous of anyone on air america radio. The lunatics on the right are so afraid of air america and so am I. It really hurts that they are using facts and truth. I pray daily to my false god that air america will crash & burn rather than being the big first month success that they are.

We "lunatics" don't fear Hot Air America; your days are numbered. Just don't blame Limbaugh for everything that's bothering you. You have enough emotional baggage of your own. We feel comparatively healthy when we hear that imbecile Molly Ivins blame Rush Limbaugh for the OK City explosion. Now here is a parody for your entertainment from

And I'm beginning to fisk your tripe.

OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR
A Sterling Record
By WESLEY K. CLARK
LITTLE ROCK, Ark.
When John Kerry released his military records to the public last week, Americans learned a lot about Mr. Kerry's exceptional service in Vietnam. They also learned a lot about the Republican attack machine.
The evaluations were uniformly glowing. One commander wrote that Mr. Kerry ranked among "the top few" in three categories: initiative, cooperation and personal behavior. Another commander wrote, "In a combat environment often requiring independent, decisive action, Lt. j.g. Kerry was unsurpassed." The citation for Mr. Kerry's Bronze Star praises his "calmness, professionalism and great personal courage under fire."
In the United States military, there's no ideology — there are no labels, Republican or Democrat — when superiors evaluate a man or woman's service to country. Mr. Kerry's commander for a brief time, Grant Hibbard, now a Republican, gave Mr. Kerry top marks 36 years ago.
Now the standards are those of politics, not the military. Despite his positive evaluations, Mr. Hibbard recently questioned whether Mr. Kerry deserved one of his three Purple Hearts.
In the heat of a political campaign, attacks come from all directions. That's why John Kerry's military records are so compelling; they measure the man before his critics or his supporters saw him through a political lens. These military records show that John Kerry served his country with valor, and that those who served with him and above him held him in high regard. That's honor enough for any veteran.
Yet the Republican attack machine follows a pattern we've seen before, whether the target is Senator John McCain in South Carolina in 2000 or Senator Max Cleland in Georgia in 2002. The latest manifestation of these tactics is the controversy over Mr. Kerry's medals.
John Kerry was awarded three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star for his service in Vietnam. In April 1971, as part of a protest against the war, he threw some ribbons over the fence of the United States Capitol.
Republicans have tried to use this event to question his patriotism and his truthfulness, claiming he has been inconsistent in saying whether he threw away his medals or ribbons. This is no more than a political smear. After risking his life in Vietnam to save others, John Kerry earned the right to speak out against a war he believed was wrong. Make no mistake: it is that bravery these Republicans are now attacking.
Although President Bush has not engaged personally in such accusations, he has done nothing to stop others from making them. I believe those who didn't serve, or didn't show up for service, should have the decency to respect those who did serve — often under the most dangerous conditions, with bravery and, yes, with undeniable patriotism.
Wesley K. Clark, a former Democratic presidential candidate, was commander of NATO forces from 1997 to 2000.

-AAR should make note that, all radio pundits think AAR will implodes after a months. .....still ticking.

Any Chance you could rerun Majority Report after the O'Frankin Factor Re-Run from 2AM-5AM EAST (11PM-2AM Pacific) instead of Randi YELLER Rhodes? The lack of a Majority Report RE-Run is causing a lot of problems in the ARCHIVE department since there is only one shot at the recording.
Many of us are listening on iPods or computers with MP3 recordings of the shows and AirAmericaPlace is not always getting the ONE RUN of Majority Report recorded properly. Since the network is not providing MP3 files directly, we rely on AirAmericaPlace.com for those MP3 files. What say you?
For example, I missed tonight's show entirely and AirAmericaPlace Bob's recording system FAILED so now there is no recording we can playback. This is really bad.
When is the network going to start posting MP3 files of ALL SHOWS on the Network Website? Is this a problem? It's not difficult to do you know. You need another body in the studio to take care of that? I would volunteer to help in this area - for a reasonable salary - if you need someone to do it.

And personally, I'm much happier to get the Randi Rhodes repeat than Majority Report. I love 'em and all, but Randi's show definitely needs more to be repeated.
If you want to hear Majority Report again, just listen to the KPOJ stream.
Posted by: Matt Thomas at April 28, 2004 01:18 AM
Listen and pay attention!
If you want to counter Limbaugh radio, you have to change your message from, "listen up, stupid" to "we're hear because we believe you people are too smart to fall for reactionary radio...". Otherwise you will turn people off in droves, even those who didn't need to be converted. I know that it's very tempting when you're upset to scream at all the dumb asses... but then Limbaugh turns right around and says, "see, they think you're stupid (while I think you're smart)...". Limbaugh's success, all of it, is due to his treating his audience this way. He tells all simple minded folk that they're geniuses. That's his whole schtick and he knows it and he laughs his ever luvin' arse off when a librahl loses themselves and starts talking about stupid people.
Posted by: Vosh at April 28, 2004 01:28 AM
Taylor,
Matt is right, you can pickup the KPOJ stream from Portland 3 hrs after the New York Broadcast of AAR. There also is a Ogg Vorbis format archive of it at the bigelow springs archive. alfrankenweb.com has links to those.
If you really really want to hear the repeat of Majority Report you can subscribe to Sirius Radio as they repeat it after the O'Franken Factor repeat in the wee hours
Consider yourself lucky. Here in Chicago we don't get any repeats any more and they are mostly playing just old songs on 950 AM through the 30th and it doesn't look like we will get a new station by May 1st either.
Actually Randi Rhodes has a lot of facts & information in her show. Her website at therandirhodesshow.com has archives and a link to her florida station stream.

I once saw a video documentary about Nazi's in America -- rednecks and such who counted themselves members of the Nazi party. Hey, I think I remember the title now; saw it 10 years ago, called, "California Nazis", I think. So they're interviewing this father in his living room and he's talking about something I'll never forget because it's very true. He said that they're main weapon is the way people react to them. Ppl. become overwhelmed with angry, indigant passions. People totally lose it, and that gives the Nazi (or any sociopathic person/group) a huge advantage.
Same goes for reactionary radio demagogues(O'Reilly, Limbaugh, etc.). You want to jump on a table and scream. How can the world be so stupid!? The demagogues know they're doing it; they know they're taking advantage of the unsophisticated all the while pretending to be chummy with them, one of them, on their side and they know they can look you in the eye with that knowing look that says, "yeah, we both know what I'm doing; infuriating, isn't it! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha this is sweet revenge for all those years of Frank Burns being made fun of on tv, now the Frank Burns' of the world strike back! Ha ha ha ha ha ha...".
I'm convinced that Ronald Reagan came after Carter because Frank Burns was replaced by a Boston intellectual. When Frank Burns was being made fun of on tv, those Frank Burns personality types were afraid to come out of the wood work. Now tv networks would never feature a drama that created conflict from the heroes clashing with Frank Burns personality types because, if that were to happen today, it would be like poking fun of G.W. Bush or Newt Gingrich or Rush Limbaugh and these people now have a following in America. Frank Burns' revenge!
Look up the interview with the late Larry Linville; he talks about how you can find Frank Burns everywhere...

The Jdocs folder
This is a database of international Internet news articles that I am using as a research database. This has been one of my research projects since 9/11. Most of the topics here were never covered by the mainstream infotainment media in the USA. This collection is about truth and lies, controversy, or unfortunately too often, the lack of it. This is a capsule view, a history of sorts, of the development of global web journalism, the 'alternative news' since 9/11. It couldn't have happened at a better time. Students of journalism will find this quite interesting as well as anyone suspecting that TV news is leaving some gaps in the story,
There are approximately 10,000 articles cross referenced by topic here, my choice of headings, almost all dealing with the issues since 911. There is incredibly good journalism here and superb documentation of fact. This is the evidence that there has been a sincere effort to explore the issues that most people watching TV are unaware of. There is factual data here that must be considered if you want to be an informed decision maker. This is the news that should have been read by concerned Americans after 9/11 and certainly needs to be considered before November 2004. I think of it as the 'Other' opinion, a global opinion in many ways. This is certainly a work in progress but I think it's important to share this now. When you read all of these as they happen you develop a point of view thats new for this world, a global view. in close to real time.
Most of these Documents are in rtf (Rich text) Mackintosh format. You can see all of them in windows 'explorer'. If you use windows wordpad to open these you will not see most of the files as only the folders and win docs will show. To see the articles in wordpad you will need to set the 'files of type' box at the bottom of the 'Open' box drop down menu to 'All Documents' (*.*) . Some of these are html documents, so try opening these in your browser.
There are many ways of looking this data base. When they are displayed alphabetically (default display mode in wordpad) you will see that I sometimes put particularly interesting or informative files (IMHO) first in order by using a number or ! mark to put them at the top of the list. I recommend viewing them chronologically to see the development of these issues. The site location is posted at the top of each page whenever possible.I recommend going to these sites, exploring them and supporting them whenever possible. This is the work of thousands of ethical, sincere people and I appreciate them immensely.
The #1ReadMeFirst/ANews folder contains my news site bookmark collection. If your looking for honest straightforward journalism here is an international collection of excellent news sites. Open one of these files in your browser and a html document with active links will pop up. These are easy to import to your 'favorites' or bookmark file.

Taylor, only thing I can think of for now is for you to write down all the specs of your Mac setup(Model, memory, browser, type of internet connection, etc.) along with the URL's you want to stream from. Take all that to your closest Apple store and ask if what they label "genius's" there can help you optimize your setup for streaming.

think whats happenin w blog web site is as blog getz bigger, long and many refreshes blow away band width. Quick fix new blog thread ever half hour. this goes on tomorrow same same we wont be able to post third hour entire.
Posted by: Sunshine Jim at April 28, 2004 02:27 AM
Ah ha Taylor... So that is the probably stream problem...
We should pray that we both will get 2 strong stations in LA & Chicago very soon as those are the #2 & #3 markets and close in size.
Chicago is only part time through the 30th on 950 AM then AAR goes silent in the Chicago area. I missed a good O'Franken Factor yesterday(Tuesday) because they didn't run it at the regular time and they aren't running the repeats anymore at 10pm like they used to do.
Bad bad programming decision because anyone that listens already is going to be watching for the new station info from the AAR website and not from endless old songs & AAR website plugs that people turn off quick.

Oh my... you are young.
Watch the movie M.A.S.H. or the first half of the TV series M.A.S.H. when Larry Linville(Not David Ogden Stiers) was in it.
The character of Frank Burns is an American Classic Icon.

Yeah this "network" is a disaster so far on the AIR part. As far as I am concerned, it is totally an internet phenomenon NOT A RADIO Network worth mentioning. The FM Radio station they are setting up here on the Monterey Bay does not come into my HOME at ALL due to the POOR location of the transmitter. They are not doing their homework about what stations would be better for the network to persist.
The other thing is they are not running the network LIVE across the country. All these RE-Runs not in REAL time regardless of time zone is the wrong way to run a coast to coast "NETWORK". A network needs to be LIVE with NO TAPE DELAYS to really succeed.

Major Frank Burns is the typical incompedent right wing gung ho war mongering type that gullibily is quick to go along with right wing propaganda. He is also paranoid and quick to call people communists or pinko's. ala Crazy Joe McCarthy.
Better to just watch the movie and a few MASH episodes that have Frank Burns in them.

*Peril in the Air for Bush: Howard Stern*
COMMENTARY
By Jody Rosen
"A strange new sound has been crackling over the nation's radio airwaves, the same airwaves that have been dominated by Rush Limbaugh and other specialists in right-wing Sturm und Drang. Suddenly, in the thick of an election year, a left-leaning equivalent has emerged, riling a mass audience with scathing, eloquent attacks on the Bush administration.
The biggest surprise of all? The long-sought liberal talk radio hero isn't Air America's Al Franken, but that walking, talking wedge issue, Howard Stern."
"Stern's revamped website looks more like Mother Jones magazine than Maxim: It features articles about the administration's trade violations in Myanmar and includes a link to the contributions page of the John Kerry for President site. Indeed, Stern has become an ardent Kerry advocate. "I call on all fans of the show to vote against Bush," he said on a recent broadcast. "We're going to deliver the White House to John Kerry."
Some might dismiss this as bluster, but Stern's words should send a shiver up Karl Rove's spine. Stern has a record of successful election-year activism; political observers in New York and New Jersey remember how his on-air endorsements delivered key votes to George Pataki and Christine Todd Whitman in past gubernatorial races.
What's more, although Stern's approximately 8.5 million listeners are often dismissed as overgrown frat boys, they might more accurately be called swing voters. They are overwhelmingly white and male, many are well educated and well off, and they vote. And millions of them listen to Stern's show in battleground states — Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee, Florida — where the election will be decided."

*Up, Up, Up With People*
*They feel fine. 'Rapture ready' crowd predicts end of the world*
Mondo Washington
by James Ridgeway
April 27th, 2004
For those Christians getting ready to be yanked up into heaven on Christ's return—assuming you think he's going to come back—there's an increasingly popular website called raptureready.com crammed full of info for that final journey. "The rapture is going to strike without warning," says the site. "The rapture is going to happen suddenly. The rapture is going to be one of the most astonishing events ever to occur."
Chockful of articles, background readings, advice columns, chats with such headings as "The Perfect Pastor" and "Preparation, information, links and sharing forum," and up-to-the-minute dope on such questions as "Do our pets go to heaven?" Rapture Ready wants to get everyone set for the Big Moment. You can spot a Rapture Ready buff by his or her handsome dark blue Rapture Ready T-shirt. Check out the Rapture Index, designed to "measure the type of activity that could act as a precursor to the rapture. You could say the Rapture Index is a Dow Jones Industrial Average of end time activity, but I think it would be better if you viewed it as prophetic speedometer. The higher the number, the faster we're moving towards the occurrence of pre-tribulation rapture." As of April 19, the Index stood at 143, down from a record high of 182 on September 24, 2001, but still in the range of "Heavy Prophetic Activity." Two points higher, Rapture Ready says, and you can get ready to "Fasten your seat belt."

Of Chalabi, Flags and Anthems...
There are two different kinds of strain. There's the physical strain of carrying 40 pails of water up and down the stairs to fill the empty water tank on the roof- after the 4th or 5th pail of water, you can literally see your muscles quivering under your skin and without the bucket of water, your arms somehow feel weightless- almost nonexistent. Then there's mental strain… that is when those forty buckets of water are being emptied in your head and there's a huge flow of thoughts and emotions that threaten to overwhelm you.
I think everyone I know is suffering from that mental strain. You can see it in the eyes and hear it in the taut voices that threaten to break with the burden of emotion. We're all watching things carefully and trying to focus on leading semi-normal lives all at once. The situation in the south seems to be deteriorating and we hear of fresh new deaths every day. Fighting has broken out in Falloojeh again and I'm not quite sure what has happened to the ceasefire. It's hard to know just what is going on. There's a sense of collective exhaustion in the air.
I've been reading articles about Chalabi being (very hopefully) on his way out. I can't believe it took this long for Washington to come to the conclusion that he is completely useless. Did anyone there actually believe he was going to be greeted as the leader of a new era? We were watching him carefully during the last few weeks, trying to see what he would do or say during the attacks on Falloojeh and all the fighting in the south. That was a crucial time… we were waiting for some reaction from the Puppets- any reaction. Some condemning words… some solidarity with the Iraqis being killed and left homeless and there was a strange sort of silence. One of them threatened to step down, but that was only after outraged Iraqis showed an inclination to eat them alive if something wasn't done about the situation…
Chalabi has only lately ventured out from under his rock (in the usual flashy tie) to cry out that Lakhdhar Il Braheimi, the special UN representative sent by Kofi to check out the possibility of elections, is completely and totally biased against Shi'a. So now Chalabi seems to consider himself a champion of Shi'a everywhere in Iraq. The amusing thing about this is the fact that, apparently, no one has told Chalabi that he has become the joke of the Shi'a community. We (Sunnis and Shi'a) tease each other with things like, "So… the Shi'a man of the moment is Chalabi, ah?!" and the phrase is usually received with an indignant outcry and a comparison of the man of the moment to… Britney Spears, for example.
I stare at him when he gives his speeches on television and cringe with the thought that someone out there could actually have thought he was representative of any faction of Iraqi society. I can hardly believe that he was supposed to be the one to target the Iraqi intellectuals and secularists. He's the tasteless joke Bush and Co. sent along with the soldiers and tanks to promote democracy- rather like one of those plastic blowup dolls teenage boys practice dancing with before the prom.
I also heard today that the Puppets are changing the flag. It looks nothing like the old one and at first I was angry and upset, but then I realized that it wouldn't make a difference. The Puppets are illegitimate, hence their constitution is null and void and their flag is theirs alone. It is as representative of Iraq as they are- it might as well have "Made in America" stitched along the inside seam. It can be their flag and every time we see it, we'll see Chalabi et al. against its pale white background.
My email buddy and fellow Iraqi S.A. in America said it best in her email, "I am sure we are all terribly excited about the extreme significance of the adoption by the completely illegitimate Iraq Puppet Council of a new national piece of garishly colored cloth. Of course the design of the new national rag was approved by the always tastefully dressed self-declared counter terrorism expert viceroy of Iraq, Paul Bremer, who is well known for wearing expensive hand-stitched combat boots with thousand dollar custom tailored suits and silk designer ties.
The next big piece of news will be the new pledge of allegiance to said national rag, and the empire for which it stands. The American author of said pledge has yet to be announced."
For the coming national anthem, may I suggest Chalabi, Allawi, Hakeem and Talbani in a gaudy, Iraqi version of "Lady Marmalade"?

Oh Ooooo gOgO!
I've met some buddhists and they have plenty of charactor to make fun of themselve's. They are fine people.
First of all you need to inform yourself what long time Christian beliefs are and are not.
1) The rapture belief is Not part of traditional christianity. Its a fringe belief that some far right wing evangelicals have incorporated into their cult like ridgid reactionary idealogical mindset. They have twisted & perverted christianity almost as much as Osama Bin Laden has twisted & perverted Islam.
2) A belief in Jesus return is much different than believing made up rapture hokum.
3) All I did was post an article on the rapture belief fantasy. My only opinion when I posted it was: "This is funny". That is Not making fun of christians and their beliefs at all.
4) The reason I know this is that I'm a lifelong christian. There is nothing wrong with laughing along with well done religious humor. I point out Monty Pythons funny movie "Life Of Brian" that is now coming into re-release in theaters. Another movie that you may have heard of directed by a catholic Kevin Smith is called "Dogma" that is humorous.
5) Just because someone is a buddhist, christian, jewish doesn't mean that they can't laugh at religious humor. When you say that you can't laugh at something funny religious, then that is truly being "Close Minded".
We all need to lighten up and learn to enjoy humor and laugh.

Chicago needs help, I know how you feel as I'm by Chicago and it makes no sense at all to cut out half of the feed of Air America Radio programing to Chicago for the last few days it is on 950 AM here.
It's... well.. bush league of AAR to do that.
Hang in there though because Chicago will rise again with a stronger station.
For now I guess we only get Rhodes, News & Majority Report through the 30th.
Posted by: Great American Patriot at April 28, 2004 09:23 AM
In Chicago this morning Unfiltered is on which means that O'Franken Factor should be on then Randi Rhodes then News then Majority Report. I hope they also restore the overnight repeats of O'Franken Factor and Randi Rhodes.
Boy did Air America Radio really screw up the last 2 days of non broadcasts in Chicago.
They need to let us know what is going on and also when we will get a new Chicago station.

WASHINGTON, D.C.— With the air gushing out of John Kerry's balloon, it may be only a matter of time until political insiders in Washington face the dread reality that the junior senator from Massachusetts doesn't have what it takes to win and has got to go. As arrogant and out of it as the Democratic political establishment is, even these pols know the party's got to have someone to run against George Bush. They can't exactly expect the president to self-destruct into thin air.

Above the law
The Bush administration is arguing that it has the right to lock up U.S. citizens forever -- without evidence, witnesses, lawyers or trials. If the Supreme Court agrees, will this still be America?
By Tim Grieve
April 28, 2004 | U.S. Supreme Court justices listened skeptically last week as Solicitor General Ted Olson argued that foreign detainees being held in U.S. military facilities in Guantánamo Bay have no right to seek relief from U.S. courts. Wednesday, Olson will be back before the court, this time arguing in two historic cases that the government has the authority to lock up U.S. citizens, too -- without charges, without a lawyer, without a trial, without any rights at all -- simply by declaring them "enemy combatants" in the administration's war on terror.
Having government agents sweep U.S. citizens off the streets and into prison cells, holding them incommunicado for as long as the government likes -- it sounds like a dark fantasy of life in a totalitarian state, the kind of thing we're supposed to be fighting against in Iraq. But this is no fantasy. In the cases of Jose Padilla and Yaser Hamdi, the Bush administration is advancing a vision of governmental power that is both far-reaching and unprecedented, at least in the United States of America. And it is a vision -- like the one the administration articulated Tuesday during Supreme Court arguments on the secrecy of Vice President Cheney's energy task force -- that leaves sole discretion, sole authority, and almost unfettered power in the hands of the executive branch.

Please manufacture things of higher quality in the future.
Posted by: Nobody at April 28, 2004 10:16 AM
Just a post, to address a general issue:
Folks, please stop "suggesting" how AirAmerica Radio should program its network, or what tone of voice they should use, or whatever.
I guarantee these people have their work cut out for them. Feedback is fine, but no radio format... Talk, Adult Contemporary, CHR, Rock... can survive, taking every armchair (non-professional) program director's advice on what their macro direction should be into consideration. If they did, it would amount to pandering, and they'd never find their own voice. This is key to any strong radio programming force.
Because that's what it's gonna take for any new venture that wants to establish itself. Noses need to be bloodied, hitting the pavement a few dozen times, before they learn to walk upright and then run. That will never happen, if they're constantly adjusting what purports to be their network persona, every time some critic (whose criticisms may indeed be legitimate, but they are not coming from a professional standpoint) pipes up and wants to tweak.
The strongest radio stations around allowed their people to follow their muses. The ones which flogged the old "we're listening to YOU!" conceit were either lying about that (inside info, kids: 99% of the time!), or were doomed to being pablum, destined to flip formats in 6 more months.

Best show on AAR...depends on your mood...
Franken is light and funny but with solid facts...
Randi is good if you like bitchy women (I do)...she is very well researched (she has a lot of the same appeal as Rush)
Morning Sedition is my favorite show...funny as hell
The Majority Report has the best guests...Sam and Janeane resonate with the indignat rage I often feel with politics.
Marty Kaplan is sorta PBS...easy to listen to if you're "delicate" but he's cdome up with some good stories
Laura Flanders....very british
Bring Da Noise...hrm...still too new to know what i think
WLIBs Dr. Russel...I like quite a bit for the intellectual level of discourse
that's all I know I don't know no more.

"dummy"(Nobody quote) celticman wrongly said about his new found love Gadhafi:
>A direct result of our countries policies>
In FACT Gadhafi was under multiple country sanctions for a very long time by many adminstrations. The Fact is that they were going broke. They needed money which is why they opened up. Now they can bring back tourism as they used to have it years ago. It had nothing at all to do with any single president.
Hell it could even be said factually that Clinton had more to do with Libya coming back than bush jr did because he was president with libya sanctions for 8 years compared to only 3 for the incompedent bush jr.

maybe we should have a mandatory military service policy for everyone at age of 18...oh wait that sounds familiar,oh yeah sounds like Soviet Union or Nazi Germany...the military is volunteer...there are wealthy kids in military as a matter of fact wouldt u say most of the men and women at Officers Schools are in "upper crust"
and dont say Officers dont fight in battles because before you become a Colonel you have to be a Captain and the lower ranking Officers are front line leaders.
I was in military and i dont remember one person saying they joined to make money or get out of the ghetto..thats craziness

All in all I don't like missing it ;)

I am single parent of two small kids (5 and 3) and my ex-wife is absent altogether, but i do feel sense of shame for not serving my country in this situation, but i cant afford to leave my kids with no parental influence either so.....?

Winning a war is a tactical issue and it's being played as a political one.
Winning the peace is a politcal issue and it's not even being attempted.
"If you're not with us you're against us"
What this means is "we aren't going to negotiate with anyone because we don't have to"
We could've achieved the same goals with lower casualties and lower cost.
This was a deliberate choice. Higher Casualties and cost over diplomacy.
This minimizes the value of those lives by saying that our appearance as tough guy super power is more important than they are.

Posted by: at April 28, 2004 11:20 AM
And here is the kicker...Neocons are not the same as Conservatives....
Thing is Conservatives are loyal as hell, that's their strength and also their weakness.
Their loyalty is being abused, have some mercy.
The Liberals weakness is also their strength, We are sensitive. Sometimes this makes us seem weak and unable to stand up when the standing up needs done.
Frankly I see it this way....Conservatives are intellectual pansies and Liberals emotional pansies. Neocons just think that they are royalty.
Posted by: Nobody at April 28, 2004 11:21 AM
celticman, glad to see that you are changing your mind and have decided that progress & reform is good. Progressive is good.
No need to back a lifelong immoral coward like bush who even now is a coward behind a she-man documented liar like hughes. Lots of conservatives now are jumping the sinking corrupt bush ship.
Of course bush boy was never a conservative in any way, shape or form so they are kicking him to the curb.
Posted by: Great American Patriot at April 28, 2004 11:21 AM
Take care Celtic...
Posted by: Nobody at April 28, 2004 11:22 AM
Let me clarify this.
Conservatives....Put their fingers in their ears and say...lalalala
Liberals in fear of someone saying bad things about them sit quietly hoping no one notices them.
Now obviously Liberals can get in peoples faces and stand up for what they belive in but you do hear it in here all the time...All embarrassed that someone might dare rant.
Conservatives can think, can face the truth, can have compassion.
We all need to get over the fear of bad feelings.

I'll repeat it again...Bush voters have been fooled...they're the ones that the propoganda is working on...They are the ones that have been tricked more than any of us...have mercy
Convince a conservative that you deserve their loyalty and they'll defend you even when you're an idiot.
Because they are defending and idiot doesn't mean they're bad people.
Those that Troll are afraid or questioning. Don't ever take any crap from them. Support every thing that you say with cross referenced evidence.

Kerry Voted For Patriot Act. The Patriot Act was passed nearly unanimously by the Senate 98-1, and 357-66 in the House. (H.R. 3162, CQ Vote #313: Passed 98-1: R 49-0; D 48-1; I 1-0, 10/25/01, Kerry Voted Yea
Kerry Used To Defend His Vote. “Most of [The Patriot Act] has to do with improving the transfer of information between CIA and FBI, and it has to do with things that really were quite necessary in the wake of what happened on September 11th.” (Sen. John Kerry, Remarks At Town Hall Meeting, Manchester, NH, 8/6/03)
Now, Kerry Attacks Patriot Act. “We are a nation of laws and liberties, not of a knock in the night. So it is time to end the era of John Ashcroft. That starts with replacing the Patriot Act with a new law that protects our people and our liberties at the same time. I’ve been a District Attorney and I know that what law enforcement needs are real tools not restrictions on American’s basic rights.” (Sen. John Kerry, Remarks At Iowa State University, 12/1/03)

Check out http://www.russfound.org. It's the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation and they're having a conference in Brussels this weekend. There's an essay by someone named Gabriel Kolko, who has an interesting perspective on the upcoming US elections. I'm not saying I agree w/ this person's comments (so hold off on negative comments towards me), but it's interesting to read a European's perspective on the elections. Here's an excerpt:
“Kerry voted for many of Bush's key foreign and domestic measures and he is, at best, an indifferent candidate. His statements and interviews over the past weeks dealing with foreign affairs have been both vague and incoherent. Kerry is neither articulate nor impressive as a candidate or as someone who is likely to formulate an alternative to Bush's foreign and defense policies, which have much more in common with Clinton's than they have differences. To be critical of Bush is scarcely justification for wishful thinking about Kerry. Since 1947, the foreign policies of the Democrats and Republicans have been essentially consensual on crucial issues--"bipartisan" as both parties phrase it--but they often utilize quite different rhetoric.
Critics of the existing foreign or domestic order will not take over Washington this November. As dangerous as it is, Bush's reelection may be a lesser evil because he is much more likely to continue the destruction of the alliance system that is so crucial to American power. One does not have to believe that the worse the better but we have to consider candidly the foreign policy consequences of a renewal of Bush's mandate.”
It seems it's all the more crucial that we fight to get Kerry's viewpoints heard!

hey celticman, upthread you posted a list of kerry's "flip flops". i'd honestly like to take the silly issue of "flip flopping" off the table, and here's why.
first off, i could post a much longer list of bush's flip flops. but more than anything, when did it become wrong to change one's mind? i mean, i think that anyone who *thinks* would change their mind if they were presented with new facts or information. think about it this way: do you still believe everything you believed when you were (for example) ten years old? of course not, because you've grown up and experienced more of life. and when you're thirty, you don't hold all the same opinions you did when you were twenty, but is that a flip flop? i'd say no. changing one's mind can be the result of many things, and i think the whole flip flop issue is silly.

# Bush is against nation building; then he's for it.
# Bush is against deficits; then he's for them.
# Bush is for free trade; then he's for tariffs on steel; then he's against them again.
# Bush is against the U.S. taking a role in the Israeli Palestinian conflict; then he pushes for a "road map" and a Palestinian State.
# Bush is for states right to decide on gay marriage, then he is for changing the constitution.
# Bush first says he'll provide money for first responders (fire, police, emergency), then he doesn't.
# Bush first says that 'help is on the way' to the military ... then he cuts benefits
# Bush-"The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. Bush-"I don't know where he is. I have no idea and I really don't care.

# Bush goes to Bob Jones University. Then say's he shouldn't have.
# Bush said he would demand a U.N. Security Council vote on whether to sanction military action against Iraq. Later Bush announced he would not call for a vote
# Bush said the "mission accomplished" banner was put up by the sailors. Bush later admits it was his advance team.

anna,
Because Bush by line campaign is 'Steady leadership in time of war'
Bush definition of steady is... 'I decide, the hell with reality. Everybody jump off the cliff because the almighty told me. Whoever doubt me is unpatriotic. And that wise ass Kerry is a flip-flopper unlike me. Now watch me jump off the cliff...."
That's basically Bush entire campaign liner.

celticman - you made my point. bush was presented with new events and new information which led him to change his mind. it's the same with kerry or you or me or anyone else. we get new info, and sometimes we change our minds.
i would say, however, that the whole list isn't a result of 911. to pick a few out:
# Bush is against a Homeland Security Department; then he's for it. (he was against the HSD after he was presented with the hart-rudmann report, after 9-11, and only changed his mind when joe lieberman introduced the HSD bill into congress)
# Bush is against a 9/11 commission; then he's for it. (bush was always against an independent 9-11 commission. he was forced into this by pressure from [for example] the 9-11 families)
# Bush is for free trade; then he's for tariffs on steel; then he's against them again. (he did this tuff to win votes. but our steel tarriffs were illegal, so he had to remove them)
# Bush is for states right to decide on gay marriage, then he is for changing the constitution. (throwing a bone to his fundie base)
# Bush first says he'll provide money for first responders (fire, police, emergency), then he doesn't. (so... why after 9-11 would he think that our first responders need *less support*?)
# Bush-"The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. Bush-"I don't know where he is. I have no idea and I really don't care." (eh? i want osama's head on a stick. why doesn't bush?)
# Bush talks about helping education and increases mandates while cutting funding. (well, i guess our priority is to spend $87 billion on iraq instead of No Child Left Behind)
# Bush said the "mission accomplished" banner was put up by the sailors. Bush later admits it was his advance team. (i don't even know what to say about that one)
i'd add some more but i think you get my point. the flip flop thing is silly and we could go around in circles with that all day. why not instead try to find some common goals and figure out a way to acheive them?
Posted by: anna at April 28, 2004 01:34 PM
>>thank you anna, but alot of these flips were a direct result of 9/11 happening, policy tends to change when muslim fanatics slaughter over 3000 of our citizens.
oh yeah, 9/11 is generic excuse to explain EVERY issue they face.
pro-choice? 9/11
budget deficit? 9/11
missile defense? 9/11
Iraq? 9/11
weakening of NATO? 9/11
North Korea? 9/11
Forest fire? 9/11
Energy policy? 9/11
tax break for the rich? 9/11
.....Bush is a dumbass? 9/11 ...now isn't this the truth.

anonymous, i don't think bush is an idiot. i think he's *SIMPLE*. this is a point i keep trying to make to people that oppose him.
we need to understand that bush supporters genuinely like the guy. they think he is sincere and he means well. now, that in fact may be true and we need to accept it. and saying he's "stupid" is insulting to his supporters for many reasons.
i for one do not think he is stupid. i do, however, think he is too *simple* to be president. i do not think he is a deep thinker, nor do i think he's capable of seeing the "big picture". a couple of weeks ago on hardball, mario cuomo mae this point perfectly clear. i don't want to copy and paste the whole thing here, but if you want to read what he said about bush, click my name. here is an excerpt:
"CUOMO: You know, the president—with all due respect—is very blunt. You know, you need tools to build a great America. His tool is the wedge. That‘s the simplest tool known to mankind.... CUOMO: See, what is now clear is, he is simply too simple, to the point of being simplistic. He thinks all you have to do is be strong, have a strong army, and you‘ll beat anybody. You can‘t win the terrorism war with an army. You obviously can‘t or Sharon would have won it a long time ago in Israel. You can‘t win it with just an army. Sure you need an army. He thinks you can solve the economic problem by giving all his rich friends a lot of money and they‘ll invest it for you and 140 million people will go to work. Well, that‘s obviously not true. He‘s simplistic. He may be utterly sincere. You know, he talks about wedge issues. Wedge is a good word for the tools he uses. The simplest tool known to mankind is the wedge."

THE FISHGREASE IRAQ MANIFESTO
The best plan for handover and exit
Part 1
"The only Iraqi government"
Iraq does have a government right now and it's not us. Iraq does have a government
right now and it's not Ahmad Chalabi and the U.S.-backed Iraqi National Congress.
Iraq's government is, and for nearly a year -- has been -- Ayatollah Ali
al-Sistani.
After the June 30 so-called handover of sovereignty, the only real and effective
government in Iraq will still be Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. The United Nations'
Brahimi, whose handover plan both Bush and Blair have embraced, knows that. He
knows al-Sistani must approve of the three people he suggests to be Iraq's interum
President and Vice-Presidents. In fact, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani will probably hand
pick those figureheads for Brahimi. If the handover is to work -- at all -- that is
what will happen. Then, in January, 2005 there will be "free elections" in Iraq,
wherein Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, being the one true ruler of Iraq's Shiite
majority, will hand pick the government. Even then, it will not be a democratic
government in any way we in the Western World envision it. Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani
will still be the single ruler in Iraq. What he says -- will go. Ayatollah Ali
al-Sistani knows this with absolute certainty. That is why he has been so calm and
relatively cooperative with our presence in what is now His Country.
This is to be, no matter what the United States of America or Great Britain, George
Bush or Tony Blair does. This is to be, no matter what the UN or any number of
international peacekeepers do -- even if those peacekeepers come from Islamic, Arab
countries. This is to be. This may depress us here in the United States - that we
cannot effect future government of Iraq. It needn't. Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is a
very moderate, thoughtful man. He represents about the best we can hope for in
post-war Iraq. He is respected, not only by the Shiite majority, but also by most
of the Sunni Muslim population. In fact, some of the people al-Sistani hand picks
to run the Iraq Government will be Sunni. He's not merely an important Muslim
religious leader, he's a polititian. He knows what he's doing. He doesn't get on
well with the Kurds in Iraq's North, but that is not a real problem, as I will
address in THE FISHGREASE IRAQ MANIFESTO, Part 3.
We cannot effect these inevitable turns of events in Iraq. We can benefit from them
or we can fight them, losing more American troops and continuing to anger the
Muslim World with further civilian casualties. Why should credit for the Golden
Path to peaceful handover of sovereignty be given to Brahimi and the UN when
they're somply acknowledging the obvious? Can't we do that? Can't the United States
just hand over power to Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani immediately, pleasantly and with
hopes for good relations with him? Sure we can! Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is
grateful to us for removing Saddam Hussein from power and has said as much. It will
take some time for Iraq to become friendly to the West in the way we define
friendly. They could start by not allowing foreign terrorists within their borders
and there is every indication al-Sistani would fatwa this immediately upon our
friendly departure. We can also buy friendship. We're good at it, and is much more
effective than military actions -- which is to say that aid is effective and
military actions are not, with regard to gaining friendship.
After our peaceful and victorious departure from Iraq, we should immediately start
sending them money. We should send money, ten, fifteen billion dollars per year
directly to Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. We should do this without stipulating what he
spend it on. He is a religious man, not a palace loving dictator. He may not spend
our aid money on exactly the things we would like, but he will not aggrandize
himself nor start building palaces, nor wipe out populations. Iraq can be friendly
to the United States of America. It will take time, and beyond vaporizing or
expelling Iraq's entire current population, THE FISHGREASE MANIFESTO is the only
way to acheive that friendship.
There are many corners I've left un-swept with Part 1 of this manifesto. Part 2
will address those. Part 2 is "Q and A".

celtic, nixon was not a tool. how's that? he was a very intelligent man who did a couple of really good things (the EPA and opening up china for example), but he also destroyed a lot of trust in the office of the president. but he was certainly not a tool. neither was eisenhower. or lincoln. or bush senior. just to name a few...

I have not been able to comment about this until now. Last night, Patton Oswalt made a joke that other liberals have made about Hitler winning an election. That is not true. On January 30, 1933, President Paul Von Hindenburg appointed Hitler to the post of Reich Chancellor. Hitler used this position to use his SA and SS to attack the other political parties. Despite this, in the elections of March,1933, the Nazis lost seats in The Reichstag. It was the emergency powers that Hitler enacted in the aftermath of The Reichstag Fire that ended The Weimar Republic and was the final step to Germany becoming a totalitarian state.
Yes! That joke does bother me because it is wrong!

Pretty lame of you celticman to excuse every single one of bush's hundreds of lies & flip flops because of 9/11. You really are a dim bulb today with every post.
Perhaps you can answer why when bush knew about the first commercial airliner hitting the WTC, 15 mins later he went ahead and sat with the kids class instead of attending to his commander in chief duties?
Then when he was told that the 2nd commercial jetliner hit the 2nd WTC tower he continued to stay in the kids classroom instead of attending to his duties as commander in chief. He stuck around those kids despite knowing that the nation was under terroist attack. What kind of person other than a responsibility avoiding coward like bush would do something like that?
I know that the facts of bush's inaction on 9/11 will confound you so you can't give a reason why he deserted his responsibilities as commander in chief.

Pretty cool that we're all working together to get our AAR fixes. Yes, Bush "performed" briliantly after 9/11 doing exactly what his script told him to do. Was it moral? No. Was it helpful? No. Has he done anything to lessen the threat of terrorism? No. Has he increased the threat of terrorism? Yes.
Bye he does "perform" brilliantly whenever he has a script and doesn't have to speak extemporaneously, then he performs like the low-average intelligent person he is.

Janine,
You are right about the popular election to the German parliament, but Hitler won the election within the parliament by intimidation of the social democrats and by keeping the communists from voting by rounding them up or locking them out.
So people can "technically" say Hitler won the election with as much veracity as saying Bush won Florida.

wait what the hell are u talking about bush didnt do good things after 9/11 right after 9/11 he went up to the american people and gived a speach saying what... dont let terriost stop u from shoping. o thz inspiring one. we wont forget ur words of wisdom about shoping. and what did bush do soon after 9/11 he wanted to attack iraq and iam sure people in the white house tried to tell him that they didnt do it and it was people in a differnt country but of course that doesnt matter cuz the bush adminstration will just lie and make up stories to try to give them a fake cause for doing what they want. i really find it funny how bushes motives change so often. at first he a uniter not a divider but look at what he has done in the last 4 years were more divided in our country and the world then we have ever been. and about kerry being a flip floper HES NOT i cant belive u guys are falling into the republicans trap to label kerry as a flip floper. its very sad very sad indeed.

Bush is a ChickenHawk Coward that has created more terroists than Osama Bin Laden. Bush also is in bed with the Saudi's as documented in the best selling widely praised book "House Of Bush, House Of Saud"
how about bush's dealings with the bin laden clan during his harken oil days, and the subsequent flight form the usa of the entire bin laden family, with state department assistance, the day after the ny attacks?
Bush is a 4 time coward in the air guard, #1 he refuses his flight physical because of drug testing #2 he quits flying despite the training cost of over 2 million in todays dollars #3 he doesnt show up for duty for at least 6 months in Alabama #4 he chickens out by getting a special favor to get out 8 months

Sigh, Celticman don't actually begin to think that people who protest George Bush's or America's actions don't actually love America.
It's because so many liberals and conservatives love America that we engage in the passionate debates that are always occurring.

Good story in Salon yesterday about W's TANG buddy James Bath who also failed out of flying status the same time our boy did. Acted as a go-between with the Bushes, James Baker, and the bin Ladens and puts forth that it was most likely Salem bin Laden among others who bailed our brave leader out of his last clusterfarg, Harken Energy.

Nightline plan for Friday night's program is to read the names of soldiers killed in Iraq.
Unfortunately, this great intention is marred by their decision to leave out 200 names.
"Nightline says that because of time constraints, the reading will be limited to those killed in combat since March 2003 and will not include those who have died as a result of accidents, friendly fire or suicide - who number about 200."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3666461.stm
Those 200 are just as dead for the same false reasons for the Iraq invasion as those who were killed by defending Iraqi attacks.

NYC BENEFIT FOR PEACE ACTIVISTS FACING JAIL
WHAT: BENEFIT CONCERT
WHO: Queer feminist activist band from NYC "The Syndicate", Bands Against Bush power pop band "Gladshot", popular rockers "Marwood", Brooklyn’s own “Motico”, all-girl punk outfit "Pie", comedienne and activist Drae Campbell as MC and Special Guests TBA.
WHERE: Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard Street, NYC Directions at www.knittingfactory.com
WHEN: Sunday, May 2nd, 2pm
HOW MUCH: $15
WHY? This is a benefit show for the 16 non-violent activists who were arrested during a protest on March 26, 2003. They were protesting Rachel Corrie’s death, violations of Palestinian human rights, and the war on Iraq. They were recently convicted, and in what is seen as an effort to punish activists in the lead up to the GOP convention in August, now face jail time at their May 12th sentencing. This is an important case for the activist community, and the defendants need our support.

On CBS's 60 Minutes II.
(CBS) A few weeks ago, the U.S. Army announced that 17 soldiers in Iraq had been removed from duty, and six of them were facing court martial for mistreating Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib, the infamous prison where Saddam Hussein and his henchmen tortured and executed Iraqis for decades.
60 Minutes II has obtained photographs of what was happening in Abu Ghraib. The photos show American soldiers mistreating Iraqi prisoners.
In his Wednesday morning briefing, Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt said the photographs may be shown in Dan Rather's report on 60 Minutes II, Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
The discovery of the photographs by the Army led to an investigation which concluded that there were problems at the prison from the general in charge of the prison, to the military police guarding the prisoners. An investigation into abuse claims started in January, after a U.S. soldier came forward with allegations and evidence of abuse.
continued at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/04/27/60II/main614063.shtml
This soldier is very brave to break the code of silence on such behavior.
The Briish have already faced the exposure of torture of iraqi prisoners by British soldiers in an earlier BBC story.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/2949282.stm
"Police were called in after the photographs were handed into a store in Tamworth, Staffordshire, for developing.
"If the pictures are found to show real Iraqis, and have not been stage-managed, such treatment would be a breach of the Geneva Convention which governs the treatment of POWs, says the Ministry of Defence (MoD)."
Posted by: Gregory Wonderwheel at April 28, 2004 03:56 PM
Note that reading between the lines of the story suggests that the lower level soldiers will get the shaft and the commanders will get the medals.
Also from CBS story:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/04/27/60II/main614063.shtml
One of the soldiers who is now facing court martial, Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Chip Frederick, described to Rather what he saw in the Iraqi prison.
"We had no support, no training whatsoever, and I kept asking my chain of command for certain things, rules and regulations, and it just wasn't happening," he said.
Frederick is charged with maltreatment, assault and indecent acts for posing for a photograph while sitting on top of a detainee, striking detainees and ordering detainees to strike each other, among other things.
Frederick wrote home to his family about the treatment of prisoners. He said in an e-mail: "We helped getting them to talk with the way we handle them. We've had a very high rate with our styles of getting them to break; they usually end up breaking within hours."
The pictures 60 Minutes II obtained show an Iraqi prisoner who, according to the U.S. Army, was told to stand on a box with his head covered and wires attached to his hands. That prisoner was told that if he fell off the box, he would be electrocuted. In another photograph, prisoners' bodies were stacked in a pyramid - one body had a slur written in English on his skin.

Calling Bush names is alright by me, he deserves it. Calling other bloggers names just because they are stupid, well... shoot, case-in-point!
;-) Kidding... It's not nice, but since they've deemed us liberals as "evil" thanks to the hate-mongers on right-wing radio, perhaps its overdue time for us to be a little fiesty back. It just becomes part of passionate debate when people's emotions go off scale. Someone hits a raw nerve. Frankly, I'm sick of being labeled by guys like c-man as evil, just because I have liberal beliefs.
Liberal beliefs in no way infringe on anyone. Conservative beliefs today do.

Osama Bin Niel,
Why dont you ask the "terrist child" what he thinks of homosexuals. I'll bet muslims have the same reaction to gays as nazis or southern baptists for that matter.
Maybe you should be grateful that you live in a country where you aren't persecuted (yeah, yeah I know it aint perfect but...)
It's reeeeeal easy to type stupid anti-bush/war shit on your computer, but the REALITY is that you have it pretty good here in the U.S. You wouldn't fare so well in the middle east, bud.

Why don't you just admit that John Kerry wouldn't have (couldn't have) done ANYTHING different. And don't give me any BULLSHIT about BUSH lying to Americans - there isn't one goddamn politician (republican, democrat, or other) who DOESN'T lie. Period.
You guys are a bunch of Self-Righteous lemmings. You think that KERRY is the lesser of two evils? Nobody with the kind of money he has isn't EVIL. And if you believe otherwise - you're an idiot.
If you don't like Bush, fine...Just quite trying to pin the blame for a shitty world on him. This place was WAY fucked up before he got here...and it's getting worse daily.

Hello Gregory Wonderwheel,
That is my point, Hitler superceded the Weimar Constitution and used his troops on the the opposition parties and still could not win an election. Kind of like a certain dubya crawling about here. But thank you for noticing my objection. I just want knowledgable people to quit using that joke.
Posted by: Janine at April 28, 2004 05:24 PM
Stephen you are dense.
I wasn't calling him a terrorist child. I was making an allusion as to what the soldier and the majority of America views the peaceful child.
LOL You think I'd label an iraqi child putting a rose in a soldier's gun a terrorist?
You are an imbecile and don't understand poetry.
You are obviously stupid and your rancor and malcontent are both disgusting.
Stephen...the term troll doesn't get slapped on someone who "disagrees" with us. The term is slapped on those people who choose to attack us negative comments.
I'd recommend you go somewhere else - because you won't be able to debate me.
You've proven you understand big words, but also that you don't know exactly what they mean.

Stephen, because unfortunately, so far nobody from the other camp has been able to come here and use factual data instead of dumb rhetoric a-la Rush. You have to understand, when so many people come in here twisting our words around, it gets very old very quickly.
For instance, your argument that by critisizing Bush, we're somehow anti-American. Get real. We are more pro-American than most conservatives. We want our money spent on our kids, not on stupid wars. We want our soldiers here, not dying in unnecessary wars. We want our students to have money to go to college. We want our retired to have healthcare and retirement benefits. We want a more fair system than the one that exists now, in which the middle class is eroding, and CEOs make 500 times more than average workers. We want the principles that resulted in founding this country to prevail.
We realize that many countries have it a lot worse than us. That doesn't mean, however, that we should just sit on our asses, and watch our country go to shit. Many countries also have it better than us in areas like civil rights, consumer rights, privacy rights, infrastructure, worker protection, etc. America is a work in progress just like any other country. Period.

To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.
-Theodore Roosevelt, 26th US President (1858-1919)
Considering that this is coming from one of the fellows on Mt. Rushmore, I think it satnds that if in the arena we fell the need to question the nescience of the current administration, that in and of itself is patriotism.

Way up thread, someone said something about mandatory service being nazi-esque. FWIW, I have to disagree, there are many modern nations that have mandatory national service, Greece and Israel the only ones that immediately come to mind. I believe that both have programs for conscientious objectors, where you still serve your country, but in a different way. I'm not really in favor of it personally, but there's a big difference between mandatory national service and what has unfortunately happened in many war-torn African countries, where a band of armed men come along, essentially kidnap the children at gunpoint, give them their own rifles and make them kill others. Not really familiar with the conscriptive tactics of the Reich, but if a draft is reinstated, the Bush twins' birthday should be lottery #1.

From the O'Franken blog:
......
This is the last exchange between my uncle (who is a retired LA Sherriff and bugs me with right wing bullshit. What do you think? : )
Thank you for the note.
Lets just do a reality check.
How old do you think the earth is?
If your answer is something under 15,000 years there is no need to read on.
This war on terror will be just like the war on drugs, a joke. This government peddles drugs and sponsors terror and the record is clear on that. The Bushhouse has a vested interest in keeping people sedated. It also has a vested interest in having a war, any war, to line their pockets and suppress americans and the rest of the world with fear. Afghanistan had a bumper crop of poppies this year thanks to your side. We could have stopped it but your president could not focus on terror when all he wanted was to have an excuse to go into Iraq. Order out of chaos as it is practiced by the right, is to create chaos so it has an excuse or the ability to impose it's will. I listen to your sides lies all the time because I look for understanding. Do me and yourself a favor and listen to both sides while you still have a couple of brain cells to rub together. If the goggly gook is too heavy for you then go to the works of Jefferson, Madison, and Ben Franklin and find out just how compromised this system is today. Especially read what they say about monopoly.
Your side supports terrorists all over the world and always has. It says that we are trying to make people free while it backs and trains the biggest killers in the world including Sadam and Osama. They were sure he had all this evil shit because, WE SOLD IT TO HIM YOU IDIOT, to fight iran for us. We trained him how to use it. Guess what, he got rid of it because he knew what we were up to. When they don't need their terrorists they hire any more they just kill them off. Your side is with the forces of evil. Your side cannot separate church and state. It despises separation of powers. It ignores the laws of the land and is selling our government to the highest bidder. It believes in trashing the environment. It does not believe in the right to privacy or public education. It only has token blacks and other minorities on it's side. It does not believe in free elections and has turned the united nations, which we started, into a joke. Your side let Hitler kill all those jews and would not even let them come to america when he offered. When that war was over we brought all the Nazi's here and this is what we get for it. If we do not restore the system and start living with the rest of the world there will be a war and it won't be over seas. They stopped it in the 60s but it will never work again. IN SPITE OF WHAT YOU THINK WE ARE NOT PACIFISTS - DON'T EVER DELUDE YOURSELF WITH ANY THOUGHTS LIKE THAT. THE CHILDREN OF THE ANTI WAR MOVEMENT AND THEIR CHILDREN HAVE THEIR EYES WIDE OPEN AND ARE TRAINED TO SEE THROUGH THE DECEPTION.
Luv, Larry

Stephen,
I guess I'll have a go at debating you, though I feel because of your willingness to engage in namecalling it is futile.
The fact is we can't go back. There is no way to say that things could have been done differently prior to 9/11. However, it is our duty to know what went wrong, and if it was the fault of negligence of the state. Consider for a moment if Gore were the sitting president when this event happened. Would you want a thourough investigation? I know I would. If it is in fact found that they weren't trying to stop these kind of attacks (not to say that they could have been prevented, but you should be able to show that you were trying), then perhaps it is time to change course.
Of course, this is all in hindsight. Much more present is the hetrodox policy of invading Iraq. Granted, he was an awful man. But it's not our country. Why did we invade? Why?
Of course, if you get right down to it, I find what is going on in our own country the most disturbing of all. Tax cuts in a time of war, no funding for our educational system, our freedoms being stepped upon by the people who pledge to provide our freedom.
All I'm saying is there has to be a better way. I don't know it, unfortunately, or I would be running for public office.
That's all for now. If there is something else you would like to discuss, please do so in a civil manner.
Posted by: axelicious at April 28, 2004 06:18 PM
Stephen:
1. All politicians lie. Period. However, not all politicians lie about taking this country to war, waste its resources, kill 700 soldiers, 10000 Iraqis, and cut taxes at the same time. It's not lying. It's stupid, short-sighted, and downright criminal.
2. I don't know what Kerry would have done. Speculating about what could have happened if Kerry was president is rediculous, because Kerry was not president at the time. However, I'll tell you this, Kerry has always advocated larger international support. Therefore, he wouldn't have gotten involved without a larger UN or NATO mandate. Period.
3. Tell me this. Colin Powell used false evidence in the UN. Condoleeza Rice painted a picture of mushroom clouds when talking on TV here and discusses Iraqi stockpile of bio-weapons. WHERE ARE THEY? Are you completely blind? They aren't there. They can't just DISAPPEAR! If the US was so good at tracking mobile labs, why couldn't they fucking track where they disappeared!?
4. Al Qaeda is not in Iraq. We're not fighting Arab countries with poor human rights records. We're fighting Al Qaeda. If we wanted to eliminate countries with poor human rights records, we could start with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, and others. If we want to go after WMD, we could have started with Iran, Syria, or Pakistan (our new ally who has sold technology elsewhere). Or how about North Korea with both horrible human rights record AND nukes? If you think for a second Saddam did not have an opportunity to fund or work with Al Qaeda, you are plain stupid. They belong to different sects of Islam. They hate each other. You are rediculous man. Even your president is saying there was no connection between Saddam and 9/11 and you're still repeating the same stuff like a good parrot.
With all the international attention focused on Iraq, they can't find ONE trace of WMD or ONE piece of evidence linking Saddam and Osama. Put the damn issue to rest already. Bush fucked up. His intelligence fucked up, because they gave him what he wanted to hear. And you are fucking up if you believe that nonsense.

Steven, here are the answers to the questions you seek.
1) Every president must swear to uphold the constitution. The oath says nothing about protecting us. The constitution is job number one.
2)Al Queda attacked.
3)Al Quada was priority number one for Clinton. Clinton's people told Bush's people that Al Quada is job number one.
4)For bush and cheney, Al Quada was job number 51. It took liek 7 months before Cheney even bothered having a meeting on terrorism.
The rest is history. bush and cheney did not hijack those planes and crash them into WTC. but that's pretty much the only good thing you can say about their horrible and reckless sleeping at the wheel.

The coming military draft
By Lisa Walsh Thomas
Online Journal Contributing Writer
October 3, 2002—It's called the "Universal Military Training and Service Act of 2001." It was introduced by two Republicans in the House on December 20, 2001, and it sits there, waiting until enough people feel that it's needed. It's what we call, simply, "The Draft." While it waits, it can be read at: http:// thomas.loc.gov (search for Universal Military Training and Service Act)
And it is waiting. To think that this act will not be made law, probably within the next 12 months, is to remain completely deaf and blind regarding the Bush Doctrine, the "Age of American Imperialism," Pax Americana, or the Corporate Oil Conglomerates' Takeover of the World—whatever we want to call it.
To many of us, that is all Iraq is about, a step in the "right" direction.
So we have enough troops to kill enough Iraqis and maybe even get Saddam. But we probably need to send a few back to Afghanistan, because all those liberated Afghans are crouching around behind rocks just waiting to assassinate any one puppet leader or another. And then, of course, we have to leave many thousands to run Iraq after we've divvied up the refineries and have the pipelines secured.
Syria and Iran are probably next. All steps toward the big prize, Saudi oil. Whether at some point this is going to cause a problem with China or not is a variable, as is the final role of Pakistan and the ultimate position Vladimir Putin takes on what is his share of the Caspian Sea oil and gas.
Many of us have played the board game of "Risk." When you conquer territories, you just never have enough armies to spread out and leave in control of the lands you already own. A real headache. As the U.S. continues the shaping of the New World Order, the same problem will exist. The body bags will have been coming home by the thousands by then, and one of the easily forgotten laws of war is that dead bodies have to be replaced by live ones. If we're allowed to see the body bags on TV, we're not going to encourage our sons to join a volunteer army. The picture is clear. The Military Universal Training and Service Act of 2001 (H.R.3598) is waiting.

Stephen, actually, you see...if I were a US citizen, he'd be my president. Unfortunatly for you, your assumption is incorrect one more time. The reason I said "YOUR" and not "OUR" is because I'm a Russian national living in the United States with a green card. I cannot vote, and therefore, GWB is not MY president. He is yours. You can have him :)

The WMD didn't magically disappear. Yes, we know that they had them 10-15 years ago, Rummie still has the bill of sale, and yes, Saddam did use them after the Gulf War. But then, they were destroyed in the accepted manner, under the watch of those in the UN that are supposed to do those kind of things. They just weren't there when Bush and his flunkies swore up and down that they were one to two years ago, none of the experts could find any evidence of them, none have been found despite major searching by our soldiers, and many of the "smoking guns," like the famous aluminum tubes, have been shown to have absolutely nothing to do with WMD by our own atomic energy scientists. In all likelihood, they were for rocket launchers.
Remember, just because two groups don't like us doesn't mean that they're working together to get us. Unfortunately, we've given them a reason to make us a common enemy, and they've begun to work together.

Stephen: explain the following statement by Cheney on Iraq WMD:
"We know where they are".
At that time, the weapon inspectors were roaming Iraq. If Cheney knew where the weapons were, he could have informed the inspectors. However, according to court reporter, Cheney had a fever to go to war, so revealing the location of the WMD's would have been contrary to his goals.
So, you get to pick from 2 alternatives:
1)Cheney was lying, causing USA to start the wrong war.
or
2)Cheney was telling the truth, and because of his failure to inform the weapons inspectors, there are now dangerous WMD in terrorist hands.

I'd be in favor of a "Universal National Service Act of 2004." in which everyone (men and women) is required to do two years of national service beginning between ages 18-20 and which can be served in either the Military, Peace Corp, or Ameri-Core, with equal pay grades for all choices.
Also, no college deferments or deferments past age 20 for any reason except for physical or mental illness or disability.
If it doesn't include all these elements, then I'm against it.

>Not one person has offered to debate the issue. What would have (could have) John >Kerry done differently. Please, please don't give me the line about "...intellegence >reports...blah, blah, blah). It's Monday morning quarterbacking. It's wrong.
John Kerry may have been a little less blunt about it, but would have done the same things. What could have been done differently? How about not explicitly allowing 9-11 to happen? How about corporate controls that stop companies like Halliburton from doing $23 billion dollars in business with Iraq via Euro subsidiaries during the Clinton years? How about real leadership and democracy instead of plutocracy?
>The only fuckers responsible for what happened on 9/11 are Al Qaeda. Period.
Who controls Al Qaeda? Osama from a cave with a radio phone? No, he is a spiritual & conceptual leader and a well-connected & charismatic rich individual. Who set them up and funded them? CIA.
>If you think Saddam wouldn't have given his left nut to inflict damage on the U.S. via >Al Qaeda - you are short sighted. Period.
Gee, after 100+ years of American terrorism inflicted around the world, what country wouldn’t want to get some payback? The fact is Iraq was completely devastated by years of bombing and economic sanctions, totally incapable of aggression.
>Bush lied? Name a politician that doesn't, honestly! Name one. If you can't be honest >with yourself about this then you are an idiot. Period.
Indeed, all great & powerful politicians lie. Maybe we should do something about that, hmm?
>Bush lied about WMD? Really. So you think that the weapons just magically >disappeared? Just ask the Kurds or the Iranians if they believe in WMD.
Well, the way we thought we knew about WMD was, of course, that we sold them to him in the first place. Saddam got rid of all his WMD after the first Gulf War, but didn’t want his enemies (you know, all those countries on his borders) to know he had disposed of them, lest Iran move in for the kill.

No seriously, I want to address this to everybody on the blog. Look, it's obvious that some people will come in here and try to say stupid shit just to start a huge flamewar. Other people come here to hear our perspective and engage in an argument. Discounting their opinion simply because it doesn't go along with ours is not any better than Karen Hughes drawing a parallel between abortion right people and terrorists. Let THEM have double standards. We should walk the high ground and engage in a productive discussion. That's how you get people joining your side.
Having said that, there's always time for jokes and fun. Just make sure you don't have a double standard thing going on.

Stephen you are contradicting yourself. If botulism only takes a raw chicken, a pot, and a heating pad, are we going to attack every single country with chicken and pots? Come on man, you can do better than that. They were talking about STOCKPILES of biological weapons, A NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM, MOBILE LABS TO PRODUCE CHEMICAL WEAPONS. They were speculating that Iraqis would launch chemical weapons if we got close to Baghdad.
Just like Saddam can't just make WMD magically disappear, Bush can't just make WMD magically appear in Iraq with the world community observing what's going on. They've looked under every hole man. They've looked when the UN was there, and then again when David Kay was there.

1. War on alcohol (prohibition) - failed.
2. War on poverty - failed.
3. War on drugs - failed.
4. War on terrorism - ...?
Do you know why things fail? Because we tend to try to cut off the tree without removing the root. To eradicate terrorism, you have to address why terrorists are able to thrive and recruit. You have to address povery, foster peace, promote cooperation, and use your power to get other countries to do the same. Look, it's not just a military problem. It's a comprehensive problem that should involve economic tools, military, crime prevention, legal, financial, you name it!

probably a manned mars mission will require international cooperation at a level never seen before. it will also require that nations share scientific findings. not to mention the missile defence shield. as soon as the MDS program is up, all international cooperation on space programs will stop.
bushs unilateral diplomacy will make a trip to mars impossible.

You can tell them that Mars expedition is empty rhetoric. There is no existing technology to send a manned spacecraft to Mars and bring it back. Investing into something of that magnitute would require tens of billions of dollars and many years of hard work. There is no way any Democrat or Republican (if they are not Bush puppets) will vote to approve these types of funs, when we just had record high budget deficit of 600 billion last year. It's unrealistic, and it will not happen. It's not a priority for this country.

The best book written on politics is written by Arthur C Clarke, in a collection of essays and speaches. The book was called 1984 something.
He is lividly against exporting our military struggles to space, and predicts that a missile defence shield would be the end of communication sattelites.
mars will:
1)cost a whole lot of money
2)require international cooperation

Because Bush will claim there are freedom-hating evil-doers on the planet, and that they are an imminent threat to our safety. And that if we don't go to mars, the smoking gun will be a mushroom cloud. And there is a Hitler-like leader on Mars that has rape rooms. I say again, he has rape rooms!!!

One more thing about the Mars issue. USA is abandoning the Hubble telescope, which has been pretty much the most useful tool to research the universe. In addition, it may not support the international space station. How can we expect international cooperation, when we don't cooperate?

I picture us landing there to see if we could inhabit it, only to find some kind of evidence that we were all ready there once before...think Planet of the Apes and the Statue of Liberty.

“Hell it could even be said factually that Clinton had more to do with Libya coming back than bush jr did because he was president with libya sanctions for 8 years compared to only 3 for the incompedent bush jr.”
If this is an argument of time then why does Clinton’s 8 years mean nothing when it is mention in the context of “I’m sorry for” and in blame to the events of September 11, 20001?
It seems many people have played a “blink eye” to Clinton when focused on the 8 months that Bush was president. Perhaps I being cynical here but I think, Ms. Garofalo (for instance), would act no differently if Bush were president for a day.
Call me a “Troll” if you like but unlike, Ms. Garofalo, I don’t have a framed picture of myself with the President of the United States. I’m not “hip” – just a “Troll”, right “Majority Report”?
Oh, BTW you misspelled “incompetent” and forget to capitalize “Libya”. See - It is easy to be shortsighted.

[Probably from Gullah juke, joog, disorderly, wicked, of West African origin; akin to Wolof dzug, to live wickedly, and Bambara dzugu, wicked.]
Regional Note: Gullah, the English-based Creole language spoken by people of African ancestry off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina, retains a number of words from the West African languages brought over by slaves. One such word is juke, “bad, wicked, disorderly,” the probable source of the English word juke. Used originally in Florida and then chiefly in the Southeastern states, juke (also appearing in the compound juke joint) was an African-American word meaning a roadside drinking establishment that offers cheap drinks, food, and music for dancing and often doubles as a brothel. “To juke” is to dance, particularly at a juke joint or to the music of a jukebox whose name, no longer regional and having lost the connotation of sleaziness, contains the same word.

The Secret Service Wants Your Name Will They 'Subpeona' This Site?

And by the way, they read every word. Hi, agent Mike. This "investigation" no longer passes the stink test.
He says not to tell folks about the "investigating" they are doing.
I have cooperated ad nauseum to this absurd investigation of the "VoteHere hack" which looks to me like it is something entirely different. I'll tell you what it looks like to me:
A fishing expedition.
It appears that they may be using the Patriot Act to circumvent some of the civil rights protections laid down in the 60s. You see, it is illegal for a government agency to go in and demand the list of all the members of a group. And you can't investigate leaks to journalists by going in and grabbing the reporter's computer.
After the Diebold memos were leaked, and my web site was shut down, around the time of the California recall election, I started getting solicited to accept VoteHere software. I didn't bite, because it was obvious that this was an entrapment attempt.
Okay, a word about VoteHere: This is the company that has no visible means of support. It doesn't seem to sell anything. Its board is heavily infested with defense industry types -- a former CIA director (Robert Gates, now heads George Bush School of Government); it had Admiral Bill Owens, also Vice-Chairman of SAIC and a member of the Defense Policy Board with Perle and Wolfowitz, a very close friend of Cheney; currently headed by former Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro.
VoteHere announced that it would be releasing its software for review, back in July 2003. It was planning to release it in September, and was supposed to do so to Dr. David Dill's web site. It never released the code, just a bunch of literature about its product. (It did release some, but not all, of its code this month, making a big splash about it). About a week into October, I got solicited with an email "click this link" for VoteHere software.
Now who would fall for that? Why would anyone in their right mind grab the stuff in some clandestine manner when it was being released into the open momentarily? And this is a company that never sells anything. Who gives a shit anyway, what its software does? It now is trying to peddle yet another alternative to a voter verified paper ballot, an idiotic solution where we turn over auditing of the vote to a handful of cryptographers who work for a private company with defense industry ties. No one I know thinks that is even a viable concept, so why would we care to examine the software these cryptographers make up?
I was in the ending stages of writing my book, putting new chapters online every few days, at that time. Like I'm going to hack into VoteHere (those who know me realize that I couldn't hack my way out of a paper bag) -- this was just dumb.
I turned down the software. In early January this year, VoteHere does a press release that it was "hacked" in October and tries to blame it on the activism community. I published an article expressing doubt that we'd gotten the whole story.
Now, I have been interviewed by the Secret Service on this VoteHere "hack" story about five times. They never spend much time on the hack. Most of the time is spent on the Diebold memos, which they claim they are not investigating.
Here's the deal: The leaking of memos to journalists is not something the government can come in and demand to investigate very easily.
Under the Patriot Act, "hacking" crimes were turned over to a new division, called the CyberCrimes division, and placed under the auspices of the Secret Service. And let me tell you what they want from me now: They want the logs of my web site with all the forum messages, and the IP addresses. That's right. All of them. A giant fishing expedition for every communication of everyone interested in the voting issue. This has nothing to do with a VoteHere "hack" investigation, and I have refused to turn it over.
So, yesterday, they call me up and tell me they are going to subpeona me and put me in front of a grand jury. Well, let 'em. They still aren't getting the list of members of BlackBoxVoting.org unless they seize my computer -- which my attorney tells me might be what they have in mind.
Also, Agent Mike told me he just "happened" to be on the plane with me a couple weeks ago. What's that supposed to do? Scare me? "You were going to Oakland," he said. Yeah, and Diebold lawyer's memos appeared in the Oakland Tribune, but guess what, Mike: That was the first hop of three on my way to Dallas. I left that morning for a speech at the Dallas Democratic Forum that evening. Never even got off the plane. Better luck next time.
And if they were really investigating what they said -- a VoteHere "hack" can someone explain why they want the logs from the web site BlackBoxVoting.org -- it was SHUT DOWN due to Diebold cease & desists during the period of the supposed "hack."
And (you know who you are) -- consider this a heads up: If you start bumbling around in my house with U.S. marshalls, the very first thing that will happen is mainstream news coverage that you are misusing the Patriot Act to get at membership lists and private correspondence for a fishing expedition on stuff that isn't even the subject of a legitimate investigation.
Yeah, I'm not a happy camper. Taking the pulse of our democracy nowadays, it doesn't feel very healthy, does it?
Bev Harris
P.S. Everyone say hi to Mike.
