"When Mark Crispin Miller first set out to write Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder, about the ever-growing catalogue of President George W. Bush's verbal gaffes, he meant it for a laugh. But what he came to realize wasn't entirely amusing.
--
"I did initially intend it to be a funny book. But that was before I had a chance to read through all the transcripts," Miller, an American author and a professor of culture and communication at New York University, said recently in Toronto.
"Bush is not an imbecile. He's not a puppet. I think that Bush is a sociopathic personality. I think he's incapable of empathy. He has an inordinate sense of his own entitlement, and he's a very skilled manipulator. And in all the snickering about his alleged idiocy, this is what a lot of people miss."
Miller's judgment, that the president might suffer from a bona fide personality disorder, almost makes one long for the less menacing notion currently making the rounds: that the White House's current occupant is, in fact, simply an idiot.
If only. Miller's rendering of the president is bleaker than that. In studying Bush's various adventures in oration, he started to see a pattern emerging.
"He has no trouble speaking off the cuff when he's speaking punitively, when he's talking about violence, when he's talking about revenge.
"When he struts and thumps his chest, his syntax and grammar are fine," Miller said.
"It's only when he leaps into the wild blue yonder of compassion, or idealism, or altruism, that he makes these hilarious mistakes."
--
At a public address in Nashville, Tenn., in September, Bush provided one of his most memorable stumbles. Trying to give strength to his case that Saddam Hussein had already deceived the West concerning his store of weapons, Bush was scripted to offer an old saying: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. What came out was the following:
"Fool me once, shame ... shame on ... you." Long, uncomfortable pause. "Fool me -- can't get fooled again!"
Played for laughs everywhere, Miller saw a darkness underlying the gaffe.
"There's an episode of Happy Days, where The Fonz has to say, `I'm sorry' and can't do it. Same thing," Miller said.
"What's revealing about this is that Bush could not say, `Shame on me' to save his life. That's a completely alien idea to him. This is a guy who is absolutely proud of his own inflexibility and rectitude."
--
But the depiction, Miller says, is also remarkable for what it hides -- imperfect, yes, but also detached, wealthy and unable to identify with the "folks" he's been designed to appeal to.
An example, Miller says, surfaced early in his presidential tenure.
"I know how hard it is to put food on your family," Bush was quoted as saying.
"That wasn't because he's so stupid that he doesn't know how to say, `Put food on your family's table' -- it's because he doesn't care about people who can't put food on the table," Miller says.
So, when Bush is envisioning "a foreign-handed foreign policy," or observes on some point that "it's not the way that America is all about," Miller contends it's because he can't keep his focus on things that mean nothing to him.
"When he tries to talk about what this country stands for, or about democracy, he can't do it," he said.

Please, Sam and Janeane,
The main reason people listen to Howard Stern, Rush Limbaugh, and recently Al Franken is not their tirades, not their POV's, but their HUMOR. They use the Medium of radio WELL, utilizing music, sound effects and create an aural experience.
Tirades are limited and eventually boring. Adlibbing is limited.
Become masters of your domain, which is the medium of radio.
Don't become another inexhaustible blowhard.
Tough love, baby,
Cheers,

NPR it ain't, but in some ways that is a good thing. Impartiality is nice, but impartiality let Nixon survive as long as he did. Hunter Thompson and the Gonzo journalists understood this, and while the news may not be up to snuff, it is critical of the power structure. Thoughts on the media http://brickprisonpundits.blogs.com

Posted by: Renee in Ohio at April 14, 2004 09:11 PM
Good Luck Jeff!
Too many Americans have grown tired Washington politics, and have even given up on the right and responsibility of voting. I plan to bring the leadership of this country back to the ordinary American citizen, and make the world of politics pay attention to the American majority, the workers and families who make up and made this nation, not just the special interest groups.
Wouldn't you rather see Congress pay attention to the problems that you worry about every day and stop concerning themselves with issues that affect only the most wealthy? This tiny minority is composed of people who will never have the concerns that you and I have, and yet in decision after decision, in policy after policy, in ruling after ruling–they benefit while the average citizen loses.
It's time that ends, and it's time that the politicians start addressing the issues that REALLY matter to the vast majority of Americans.
Elect me as your Representative to Congress, and I promise to represent our interests.
Sincerely,
Jeff Seemann

Ahhh, the good ole Reagan years... When the yearly budget was under a trillion, and the deficit could still be calculated w/o needing a crystal ball. When they realized that there was a limit to how much you could cut taxes while increasing spending. When we knew that the pres wasn't REALLY as evil as he seemed, and believed him when he said he couldn't recall.... When the supernatural instructions came through an astrologer, instead of believing it came directly from god.

good for you
and take away their right to buy from Canada if we can't
According to a CBS evening news "Inside Story" report last week,
Boston and New Hampshire and all the buying power of individual
U.S. citizens are very small potatoes compared to the largest
U.S. customer of Canadian pharmaceuticals: The U.S. government.
If your jaw hit the floor when you read that, then you look
exactly the way I looked when I saw the CBS report. I thought
I'd heard it all, but this not only takes the cake, it takes the
whole buffet.
The Department of Defense and the Veterans' Administration are
just two government agencies that are allowed a special waiver
to purchase drugs from Canada or any other country; something
that citizens like you and me can't do. Not to mention Boston
and New Hampshire.
In the CBS report, Michael Valentino - a spokesman for the
Department of Veterans' Affairs - was asked to estimate how much
his department has spent on foreign drugs. He said, "It's been
in the hundreds of millions of dollars over the last several
years."
So in spite of the supposed "safety concerns" the FDA says are
presented by these foreign drugs, millions of veterans and
others through the Defense Department have been supplied with
Canadian drugs for years.
Of course, what we're witnessing in all of this is some of the
most cynical cronyism you can imagine. Congressmen, regulators,
and lobbyists accommodate one another as they please, but when
it comes to the needs of citizens, or cities and states
struggling in the current economic climate, we're given
restrictions and left to our own devices.
A couple of centuries ago a certain tea party in Boston helped
trigger a revolution.

I don't think it is a valid critique to say liberals attack Bush to much. At least, it's certainly a critique that is endorsed by a lot of trolls, which makes me suspect it.
I don't think the right wing nuts like being attacked. Keep doing it. It's an important tactic that is one part of a larger strategy.
And yes, keep offering constructive ideas, alternative visions for a better world. But we can't stop attacking the nut job criminal scum!
ATTACK!!!!

Re difference between Bush and Kerry:
Personally, I'm still a perplexed Democrat wonding whether to vote for Kerry. I'm leaning toward voting for Kerry but with great distaste.
There is a new movie version of Spartacus coming out which makes me think: "How would Spartacus vote? For Crassus or Gracchus?"
As an electoral slave, should I vote for a Green in order to demonstrate my actual belief that both the Repubs (Crassus-Bush) and Demos (Gracchus-Kerry) keep me in electoral and corporate dominated social slavery or should I vote for the Democratic candidate who will make my slavery less onerous?
Obviously, Spartacus would vote for freedom, not the lesser of two slaveries. But Spartacus was crucified for voting that way, and the Appian Way was lined with thousands of crucified slaves who said "I am Spartacus!" Will the Greens voting for alternative candidates only be crucifying themselves on a new electoral Appian Way? I'm not so sure I want to be crucified too, were I to vote "I am Spartacus!"
I really don't know how to resolve this in my own mind today, and hope that I can find the answer by election day.

The Bush team doesn't mind the 9/11 (cover-up) Commission.
It is clear that the conclusion is already decided: the fault was that Congress didn't provide enough money for manpower and machines to crunch the vast amount of information. The Republicans want a finding of intelligence failure because the failure will be blamed for lack of money and lack of "integration" so the NAZI Dept. of Homland Security is justified.
Mike is correct: no advocacy in this 9/11 Cover-up Commisison.

I dunno about Seemann, he says he's anti-outsourcing but has nothing about outsourcing on his website, STOPID.
Alot of people, democrates and republicans are writting large checks to Tancredo of Colorado because along with immigration, make up his core platform.
We NEED stanch anti-outsourcing canidates and those of us affected are willing to spend big dollars to get them elected.

Gregory Wonderwheel - I feel your pain. As a Deaniac I am having a hard time get enthused about Kerry. But sometimes it really is about the lesser of two evils.
Wasn't there an election in Lousiana for governor where David Duke [notorious racist] was up against a rather shady character? The bumper stickers all read, "Vote for the Crook, It's important."

Please ask Mike about the following;
In Tenets testimony he did not not talk with Bush about the Aug 6 PDB because Bush was on vacation for August and was not briefed on the PDBs
--------------------------
ROEMER: Would it have made any difference if you had mentioned -- did you ever mention it, for instance, to the president -- your briefing the president from August 6th on?
TENET: I didn't see the president. I was not in briefings with him during this time. He was on vacation. I was here.
ROEMER: You didn't see the president between August 6, 2001, and September 10th?
TENET: Well, no. Before -- saw him after Labor Day, to be sure.
ROEMER: So you saw him September 4th -- at the principals' meeting?
TENET: It was not at principals' meeting.
ROEMER: Well, you don't see him...
TENET: Condoleezza Rice -- Condoleezza -- I saw him in this time frame, to be sure.
ROEMER: OK. I'm just confused. You see him on August 6th with the PDB.
TENET: No, I do not, sir. I'm not there.
ROEMER: OK. You're not -- when do you see him in August?
TENET: I don't believe I do.
ROEMER: You don't see the president of the United States once in the month of August?
TENET: He's in Texas and I'm either here or on leave for some of that time, so I'm not here.
ROEMER: So who's briefing him on the PDBs?
TENET: The briefer, himself. We have a presidential briefer.
ROEMER: But you never get on the phone or in any kind of conference with him to talk at this level of high chatter and huge warnings during the spring and summer to talk to him through the whole month of August?
TENET: We talked to him directly throughout the spring and early summer almost every day.
ROEMER: But not in August?
TENET: In this time period, I'm not talking to him, no.
TENET: I don't have a recollection of being called, Mr. Roemer. But I'm sure that if I wanted to make a phone call because I had my hair on fire, I would have picked up the phone and talked to the president.
ROEMER: It was just never made.
TENET: No.
ROEMER: Last question and I'll be quick.
On the NSC staff, Mr. Clarke is there for a long period of time. People have various opinions of Mr. Clarke. There's a great deal of turnover on the NSC staff from 2001 on. Is that correct? Mr. Clarke resigns or moves on in 2001, General Downing (ph), General Gordon (ph), Fran Townsend (ph), is that correct, the line up of people? How does that impact your ability to get information and communicate with the CSG, if at all?
TENET: I don't believe that it does because there's a standing structure in place. Somebody else

Sadly. the commission has a number of active politicans on it. They need to look more "balanced". The question is what will be omitted from the final report (before Cheney gets it and starts to ommit a bit).
Still, a less political and more focused commission would be nice. One that would call witnesses on half-truths and evasions. And no more of these time limits - give each person a set number of questions to throw out and hammer on (and keep hammering on until answered - no more playing out the clock like this is some sport).

Enough with the sexual comments about Ann Coulter! Don't sink to her level. She says enough stupid things that can be criticized. But all this stuff about snakes and blow jobs is really crude, stupid, offensive to women. It is also more typical of the right-wing to attack a woman's sexuality instead of her ideas. It's not as though it is difficult to disprove her twisted ideas.

The Bush team is the Army of Santa Anna and the Army of King George. The progressives against the war in Iraq are the patriots and the fighters in the Alamo.

I was a NJ for Dean volunteer since last June, and I have good news from NJ. The Dean meetups in NJ now are morphing into places to meet and talk to Dems running for office against the right wing Republicans here in NJ. At the last meetup on April 7 in Glen Rock, where we had nearly 50 people, we met two Dems running against Scott Garrett in the 5th District (The Sierra Club says Garrett has one of the worst environmental voting records - ever.) There is info for folks wanting to know about their local races in NJ at this link http://www.njfordean.org/elections.php
Maybe other states may want to use it as an example of how to beat the Republicans in their states.....

I love the show. I wish Jeff Seemann luck, however, he made a comment that was off. He said that every progressive reform was passed by democrats. Not true...one of the most progressive Presidents was a Republican. President Theodore Roosevelt was a leader in passing reforms. He was a republican. After his term, Taft was appointed to president and made a handful of mistakes that upset Theodore. Theodore started the Progressive Party. In the election of 1912 Roosevelt ran against Taft and democrat Woodrow Wilson. The republicans were split and that led Wilson to win the election. At that time Republicans were the liberals and Democrats were the conservertives. Because of this election the roles changed and we have the parties we have today.

The only good thing about 9/11 and Iraq...can you even imagine what Bush would have done to us over the last 3 years??? I was worried about book burning, Fed vouchers, etc...but we still have to get rid of the tax money pouring in the faith based BS...as Al mentioned, should we pay for Fawell's counseling center who will discriminate (hiring and clientel) based on religion?

The US media has once again kept most Americans in the dark.
"The assassination of Sheikh Yassin certainly harmed the US
in Iraq, quite directly. Though the media are keeping
pretty quiet about it ,the murder of the four US security
contractors in Fallujah appears to have been retaliation
for the Yassin assassination; responsibility was taken
immediately by a previously unknown group in Iraq called
"Brigades of Martyr Ahmed Yassin."
Chomsky has once again exposed the truth.

Sorry for the long post folks, bur last night i psychoanalyzed George W.
George W was not a bright kid.
Mommy said, shoot for the moon, George!
Daddy said, leave the kid alone, Barbie!
George flunked left and right!
Great expectations!
Oh prince Oedipus!
You seen nothing yet!
Did you do your homework? George!
No mommy, I slacked off!
I am not smart, mommy!
Then study harder! You know you're my favorite!
Give mommy a kiss!
George, study hard! You're my special president boy!
Mommy, it is so hard!
Is it weird, or is it wired?
Barb, leave the kid some slack!
Anyone can tell he's not cut out for great expectations!
Shut your trap , pussy H! Go do your duty! Or you want me to kick your ass?
Oh my Oh my...
I'm at Harvard! Look all those study bees!
Let me drink myself out of this misry!
Oh my Oh My
I'm at Yale. Look at all those smartypants!
Hey, they like me!
Another keg, buddy?
Careful with those blue pills. My mommy told me that!
Oh my, mommy leave me be!
I don't wanna be a pol'tishun!
Yeah!, leave the kid be Barb!
Shut your trap H!
O'r I'll stuff this poodle where CIA never went!
Mommy says: Georgie boy: Get out there and pass on some genes. Here's a list of candidates approved by the Spencer clan!
Oh Laura! How'bout us getting somethin cooking? Give me 5, Mmm'key? just let me snooort this line...
I think I get this relijun stuff, Laura!
My new imaginary friend just told me I'm all right! I dun nuthing wrung! All I had to do was let my imaginary friend be on my side, instead of fighting my daddy!
If they hate me it is juss' cause they got them deamons!
I found such peace, Laura! My new imaginary friend keeps patting me on my back! I'm OK! I did fine! I can do anything! See! I don't need that stripe! I don't need no bottle! I never done nuthing wrong! I'm invincible! It so peaceful! I can do no wrong! Jeb put that cat on fire! Yes he did! I wan't to call my momma!
......AND THE REST IS HISTORY......
Uncurious George was unleashed on the world.
God (or your imaginary friend of choice) help us all. The W, Barbara and imaginary friend troika is spinning out world.

I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. I love the banter between janeane and sam. They carry on like a brother and sister, and dont let each other get away with anything, i think its hilarious.....does anyone know when Ring of Fire with kennedy and papantonio is coming on? I cant wait. For a random thought, Bill Hicks is one of the greatest comedians of all time. If anyone gets the chance to download or buy some bill hicks material i highly recommend it. He was taken from us way too early in 1994 at the age of 32. He has the ability of making want to laugh, cry, scream, and love all of humanity. We must never forget that republicans are people too, except for Cheney of course. I think that we all know that Cheney is a cyborg sent here from the future to crush the wills of free thinkers everywhere. We must cut him off from his power source (sweet black oil) before he completely destroys us all. But like i was saying the only way that we are going to help people realize the truth is to show conviction, and compassion to everyone, even republicans. Changing the hearts and minds of individuals is not about ideology its about truth, and facts. We will only be free when the power of love overcomes the love of power. HOly crap im rambling. Keep your heads high liberals, the truth will prevail.

I can't find a single good thing about that guy. Bush-dog is a low down, lying, money-grubbing control freak. My father and I argue about the president more than we argue about anything else. Do you take issue with my life? Do you have a problem with it??? Are you mad that I'm capible of completing my workload AND talking here? Are you so DULL that you sit around all day smoking pot wishing you lived in Haight/Ashbury? I help people whenever I get a chance, GET THEIR BLOOD ALL OVER MY UNIFORM or on my clothes if I'm off duty and come across a wreck (have you ever had to pronounce a 3 year old dead while on vacation in Los Angeles, I have), yet you mock where I spend my time? The "Daddy please love me!" line reminded me of this:
"In his knee-slapping 2003 book Lies (And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them), Franken relates an encounter with Barbara Bush on a flight to Washington. After describing his unsuccessful effort to pick up a conversation with Bush--the former First Lady rebuffed each approach with, "I'm through with you"--Franken quotes several unnamed "Washington insiders," both Republicans and Democrats, who thought it was funny that Franken regarded Bush's dismissive attitude of him as a form of kidding. Franken writes that at a Bat Mitzvah in Washington soon after his Barbara Bush encounter, "I kept hearing things like: 'Oh no, she's a horrible bitch.' 'Omigod, she's the worst bitch on earth.' 'She can be very charming, but Barbara Bush is the Queen Bitch.'" Then he writes, "But another, even more interesting, insight came from everyone who knew the Bushes. They all agreed. 'Dubya is her son.' He's mean."
This last "insight" leads Franken to the conclusion (with apologies to Mr., Franken for the long quote): "I think we're all too ready to blame Karl Rove, or Dick Cheney, or Ari Fleischer, or Gale Norton, or Donald Rumsfeld, or John Ashcroft when this administration does something despicable. When South Carolinians get push polls saying John McCain fathered an illegitimate black child, you know Karl Rove had something to do with it. But it's really Bush. When our energy policy is set by cronies from the oil, coal, and automobile industries, you can shake your fist at Dick Cheney. But it's Bush. When Ari Fleischer feeds rumors that the Clinton people vandalized the White House, doing $200,000 worth of damage, but months later a GAO report says that ain't true, you can say that Ari Fleischer is a chimp. And he is. But it's Bush. When this administration reinterprets the Clean Water Act to allow polluters to dump into creeks and streams, you can blame Gale Norton or Christie Todd Whitman all you like. But it's Bush. When Donald Rumsfeld refuses to apologize for our military accidentally killing a wedding party of fifty in Afghanistan, you can bet that swaggering callousness emanates from the Oval Office. When an American citizen can be put in prison indefinitely without charges being filed and without access to a lawyer or a judge, you may think 'John Ashcroft is out of control.' And you'd probably be right. But the rest of the time, don't kid yourself. It's Barbara Bush's son." "

The Party said that Oceania had never been in alliance with Eurasia. He, Winston Smith, knew that Oceania had been in alliance with Eurasia as short a time as four years ago. But where did that knowledge exist? Only in his own consciousness, which in any case must soon be annihilated. And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed -if all records told the same tale -- then the lie passed into history and became truth. 'Who controls the past,' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.' And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. 'Reality control', they called it: in Newspeak, 'doublethink'.

I've been a volunteer for Howard Dean since last June and have good news for folks in NJ. The Dean meetups - now NJ for Democracy meetups - have morphed into places to meet challengers to the Republicans in Congress as well as local races. The NJ for Democracy website has info about local races in NJ - http://www.njfordean.org/elections.php
At the April 7 meetup in Glen Rock, where we had about 50 people, we got to meet two Dems running against Scott Garrett in the 5th District (the Sierra Club in NJ has given Garrett one of the lowest scores ever on the environment). We actually got to grill the Dems on the issues important to us.
Perhaps this can be a model for other states.
We brought the politicians directly to us instead of waiting for the media to cover the politicians and the inevitable ads that distort the facts.
This week John Kerry will be in NJ. NJ for Democracy folks will be here to see him. We plan on baking this Saturday too....

Hey, I have to speak up for Texas. Despite having elected the Resident, there are many fine people in the state, and Texas boasts a long and honorable tradition of liberalism and independent thinking. The voters of the state certainly were led down the primrose path by Dubya, but then so was everyone else. Most people who denigrate Texas haven't been there; you'd really be surprised.
But people who WANT to be from Texas ARE scary. And Bush is first among them. He moved there for a badass cowboy fantasy, and is trying to make it come true. Real Texans aren't buying.

'A Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood scared me. Also made me realize what life would be like if Christian Fundamentalists were in charge. Imagine going to your bank machine and finding your account had been closed out because women can't own property. Men are also persecuted but for different things.
I've read the bible many times. 'A Handmaid's Tale' is a perfect combination of Orwell's '1984'.... and the old testament.

'It exists!' he cried.
'No,' said O'Brien.
He stepped across the room. There was a memory hole in the opposite wall. O'Brien lifted the grating. Unseen, the frail slip of paper was whirling away on the current of warm air; it was vanishing in a flash of flame. O'Brien turned away from the wall.
'Ashes,' he said. 'Not even identifiable ashes. Dust. It does not exist. It never existed.'
'But it did exist! It does exist! It exists in memory. I remember it. You remember it.'
'I do not remember it,' said O'Brien.
Winston's heart sank. That was doublethink. He had a feeling of deadly helplessness. If he could have been certain that O'Brien was lying, it would not have seemed to matter. But it was perfectly possible that O'Brien had really forgotten the photograph. And if so, then already he would have forgotten his denial of remembering it, and forgotten the act of forgetting. How could one be sure that it was simple trickery? Perhaps that lunatic dislocation in the mind could really happen: that was the thought that defeated him.
O'Brien was looking down at him speculatively. More than ever he had the air of a teacher taking pains with a wayward but promising child.
'There is a Party slogan dealing with the control of the past,' he said. 'Repeat it, if you please.'
'"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past,"' repeated Winston obediently.
'"Who controls the present controls the past,"' said O'Brien, nodding his head with slow approval. 'Is it your opinion, Winston, that the past has real existence?'

It's hard to listen to all this shrillness. You probably hate hearing this, but compare your show to Franken's. He's able to educate and entertain without being shrill about it.
-Take it easy
P.S. Hour #3 seems to be much better so far. Please, no more screaming matches!

U know what comedy is? Its not repeating what we already know. Its making fun of what we already know. Its a fine art, and in my opinion this show doesn't have it. Not your falt tho, everyone has limitations and should know them.

about the press con last night. it would be great if you could interview a number of the reporters that attended - perhaps all of the ones who asked questions - and ask them;
1 - what, if any were he ground rules?
2 - ddi they submit their questions ahead of time
3 - were they ordered not to followup?
2 - how was the seating determined?
JG - love the new mic. keep sam in line
sam - sometimes you get a bit shrill - but i know its coming from a good place
i love you guys!!!

Hi everyone.
I am from Switzerland in Europe and
I listen to AirAmericaRadio.com via Live Stream on the internet.
My favourite program is "Majority Report".
The reason: JANEANE GAROFALO.
(I have to listen to her in the night from
2 am to 5 am CET. But Janeane is worth it.)
Goodbye.

All one has to do is read this Blog to feel very fortunate to be a conservative and a supporter of the great George W. Bush. It would seem being a liberal and a listener of WhineAmerica requires the following: Deep dark depression, cynicism, and sick humor. America is #1!

haha- I read someone saying "messing with OUR network" hehehehehe Why does it take a "network" to get out your message? Why not create a genuine, popular show, make it successful, and get other stations to pick it up around the country versus PAYING for airtime yourself?
Oh yeah, because not many people believe in this junk!
