March 31, 2004 FIRST SHOW Podcast here
Welcome to Majority Report Radio!
Welcome to the majority report blog. We’re working on this thing so bear with us. With that said, Janeane and I want you to be a part of what we’re doing. We welcome all your comments, suggestions, gripes etc. Trolls are inevitable- please ignore them.
Enjoy the show!

Uh, it was great.
Uh, don't worry about the "uhs", we know you're justing getting started. In fact you should start each hour with a 10-second uuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhh, just to break the ice and let the ass unwind. We're on the same team and we already love you, so chill. Radio isn't the same as Hollywood, how you "look" isn't as anal-retentively all-important as on TV or movies. Blemishes are OK. Just be honest. That's all.
Looking forward to you hitting your stride. It was great.

After listening to most of the first day of Air America (online in Milwaukee), I want to thank everyone involved with the network. The programming was solid, the guests were good, and the glitches were minor given the magnitude of your undertaking.
Thanks to "Majority Report" for focusing on the importance of blogs! Some suggestions for future guests, from my stable of daily blogs and liberal rabble rousers:

Bob Harris - http://www.bobharris.com

Keep up the good work, and we'll keep listening.

you will be held accountable by the blogosphere. yer feet will be held to the fire. keep it real. you are doing the work for so many of us without a voice it is vitally important that you don't lose our trust.
that said, for a first day, you all, every one of you in your respective shows, did a very good job. celebrate good times guys and gals.
i might be able to sleep at night now that my voice has a public forum.
and you today, all of you at air america, spoke for me today. the clouds rolled away...was in the light.

Thank you!

I enjoyed, or should I say am enjoying, your program very much. Good guests and discussion!
One thing of note, isn't it interesting how the "anybody but Bush" crowd gets mad whenever anybody suggests they will vote for someone who is neither Bush nor the Democratic nominee.

Hey! I just spent 90 minutes searching for a MR blog somewhere. Thanks sam for mentioning it just now!! Janeane & Sam--I want to thank you for such a great first show! I live in Dallas and can only listen online. Thank god my connection hasn't failed yet. Janeane, I met you in Ames, Iowa in the hallway during the rally before "the speech." You were so kind to me and I will always remember that. Good luck guys. I will try to listen when I can. And I will be waiting for a station in the Dallas area to pick up Air America Radio...but I won't hold my breath!

Great job, you guys! All the best in your new endeavor. We're all behind you.

I loved hearing Dave Chappel, he is suprisingly intelligent. I would like to say that its a great thing what you have done, its about time that the sensible of the country have a voice. For too long, too many Americans have been made to feel isolated by the institutions of the Right. I wish you the greatest success.
Posted by: Edgar Gutierrez at April 1, 2004 03:41 AM
Thank you so much for doing this......its about time the left can be heard. Great job and the show is great.

Good show so far. I'm a conservative, but not the kind that puts cotton in their ears whenever an opposing viewpoint is raised. That and I don't consider spending billions more than the previous DEMOCRAT to be following conservative values. Anyway, point is, for a first show you guys are doing very well. Keep it up.

Greetings from San Francisco!! Please come to our city soon. We're listening via the web for now, but we'd like an actual radio station to tune into.

Keep it coming...

Posted by: Bob at April 1, 2004 03:42 AM
A couple of points...
1) In medicine, decisions are fear-based as well. People who present with certain symptoms, in preclinical years we learn you don't get an expensive test, end up getting expensive tests just to avoid lawsuits.
2) You mentioned the term liberal and how we should take it back. This is a good point to discuss and who is what. I was against the war, but for moderate reasons (I think), though I'm for unions and fairly leftist things. On the other hand, every speaker at the anti-war rally a year and a half ago were anti-capitalist, anti-corporation, anti-military, etc. Who's a liberal, what do you call the extremists, etc?
3) I'm loving your program. Please keep up the good work.

Thank you! I have not turned the station off since noon! I am so happy to hear my views represted! I just wanna comment on the Mogodishu-like attack on American civilians today in Falluja. I am so enraged! I wonder if Bush will repeat his stupid joke today! I am not happy that I had to watch the uncensored video online because CNN and the rest of the news outlets fuzzed out most of it! Americans need to see it! All of it! These are our troops and citizens being mutilated! Why won't they show the truth...as ugly as it is?
Posted by: Adrian at April 1, 2004 03:45 AM
GREAT SHOW!
I'm so happy that someone is out there speaking for real people. I plugged you on my new blog and I'm telling everyone about you the show.
One question for the new network?
What can we do to get you in our town?
I live in a liberal strong hold in my state. I'd like to have your show on the air I think that my town would be receptive. Let me know if there is anyway I can help. Would it be possible to get the show carried on a college radio station?

Hey Folks,
Love the show! A few bumps, but you'll get it all ironed out. Been waiting MONTHS for this!
Oh, and Jeneane... a short sychophantic rant...
THe first time I saw you waaayyy back in the 80's on an MTV Spring Break Comedy thing, and thought, "MY GOD, now that's one awsome chick!" Back then even, it was clear you were bucking the mainstream crap in such an great, subversive way, and I loved it. I am so glad you still have that same (hate this word--->) spunk.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

I am a center-left Democrat. But the abortion issue gives me the willies. Janeane was talking earlier about what is termed 'partial-birth abortion.' More willies. From a human rights standpoint, I just find it troubling that it can somehow be legal to kill a 'fetus' just a moment before it would otherwise become a 'baby.' Even if it doesn't happen often, it is not rational to allow it to happen at all. And it does certainly exist, Janeane; otherwise, why would we have three court cases right now?
They - the right - may be absolutists, and I understand that it is natural to assume an absolutist stance in opposition. But I do not think it is helpful politically or, dare I use the 'm' word, morally, to support 'partial birth abortion,' or whatever you want to call it.
Nice Billy Bragg/Wilco bumper music, by the way.

There are a great many more people who are skeptical of Bush and the Neo-Conservatives than most media outlets would have America believe. It is wonderful that there is now media source with a message other than, "Everyone else is a sheep; you should be a sheep, too."
Posted by: Keith J. at April 1, 2004 03:50 AM
Great show, even though I have dial-up access and it drops off from time to time. I have listened all day and so far I like what I hear. Majority Report is a great show and I know it will only get better given some time and the small production bumps get ironed out.

Don't feed the trolls!!
Posted by: MattDallas at April 1, 2004 03:51 AM
Not to detract from Majority Report Radio or anything (great job, gonna be a big fan, etc.), but for anyone seeking more liberal radio, I highly recommend Mark Levine's RadioInsideScoop.com . This guy was a congressional attorney who actually quit his job because he became so outraged that what he was hearing in open, public, congressional testimony wasn't being covered on the networks or in the press. He's got archives and still gets "the inside scoop" from his contacts on the hill.
Anyway, good program. Just thought I'd shamelessly plug my friend.

We know we don't have to apologize about the word 'liberal'. It is not a bad thing to be a liberal. In fact, we are the true Americans.
Why do so many liberals apologize for sounding like a 'conspiracy theorist' when expressing concerns about the practices of the right. Let me set the record straight - IT IS A CONSPIRACY. How do you explain how effective they are in delivering their message, instituting legislative initiatives and institutionalizing their regulatory agenda. They act in unison to achieve their goals. It is a conspiracy to subvert democracy.
So stop saying that you don't want to sound like a conspiracy freak because you're not a freak - you're a patriot who knows and appreciate the loss of liberties and privileges that all Americans are entitled to. We need to stop this right-wing conspiracy!

Janeane and fellow host, great show and thank you and other hosts, especially Al Franken, for doing this. I've waited 10 years for this when I used to listen to Limbaugh and think, 'why isn't there a liberal radio combating this nut?' I know Air America is going to be successful and I look forward to seeing true cable news stations broadcasting in the future 24x7. I have and will continue to advertise Air America here in Detroit. Our country is on a brink of no return and I know you all are doing this in a very personal way, so that in itself is the reason why you're going to succeed beyond all of our wildest dreams. Also, you are on the side of all the natural principles, exposing the lies of these manufactured man-made principles, and that will make you succeed. Al’s show came in badly over the Internet. I got about 10 minutes of over an hour. I constantly tried reconnecting up to that time. The mid-afternoon and your show are coming in great; no disconnects. I have a cable connection so you may want to enhance your hardware on your end to help out Al’s show. I loved the small bit I could hear of Anne Coulter. I thought that was great. Al is extremely funny. I still remember the show he did in the summer with APR. With you guys on the radio now and if Kerry wins the election, I just might decide to stay in this country and not move to London like I was planning.

Man, oh, man...has this been an awesome stretch of days of late! It could very well be the 'perfect storm' -- Clarke, gas prices rising, and Air America Radio!
I've had the fun of being able to listen to your excellent programming most of the day...writing down the names of many of your advertisers along the way: GM Certified Used Vehicles, ATT Wireless, Benadryl, Campbell's Soup, Theraflu, McDonald's, Caldwell Banker, American Express...
Since I'm getting the stream online of the show, I thought I'd Google some of these companies, go to their Contact Us page and do just that -- let them know their support for this new radio station is worth continuing. I made about 5 calls to the 800 #'s they had on their Contact page, and sent emails to the rest simply saying:
"Thanks for advertising on Air America Radio, today...my husband and I will keep you guys in mind next time we're looking for ____________." I'd suggest everyone else do the same when you get a chance -- some of the Customer Service Reps I talked with were really happy to hear from me! :o) Not only will you make their day because you're not calling to complain about a product of theirs, but you might even turn them on to our new oasis of ideas in an ever-maddening world...
Thx for having Bill Maher as your first guest...I just love him. Keep the info coming... We've needed this for a l-o-n-g time in America, and we're going to prove that we're a force to be reckoned with, both financially and at the voting booth.
Let's roll, America...thanks AAR for helping to rally the family and get these guys out of office in November!
Cheers!

It's been a terrific day, but you two are the best so far. You're both naturals at this, which is terrific.
I was sorry you did not follow through on your early teaser about the Nader-Rhodes tiff. I was thrilled to death, frankly, but you seemed to be leading toward a condemnation of Rhodes for yelling and hanging up, but then bailed on making a comment. Did I miss it, or did you take a point of view?
Thanks for keeping the debate on the left going. Air America is a great venture.

There's more about the Diebold story. If you go to AviRubin.com , you'll learn about the analysis of the software behind the Diebold. It was written by kindergartners.
Moreover, Diebold was found out to have made it prohibitively expensive for the State of Maryland to demand a change in the code. (His language was that Diebold should charge Maryland "Out the Yin Yang" if they demand the changes.)
A whole program is on radioinsidescoop.com , but I guess I should stop the plugging! :)

Not bad for the first day out. Janeane, bubbie, you're doing fine. Sam, you're doing a bit less fine, nothing that can't be fixed with experience. The scattershot outrageous quip thing probably works better at a party after a few drinks. Then again, since I don't think it's ever gotten me laid, maybe it just seems that way because of the drinks.

Props to Sam for speaking out against deoderant. Ann Coulter had a column about how getting rid of deoderant was a French plot and I heard Rush talking about how pointy-headed academics were opposed to it as well. It's a weird but valid liberal cause...people smell like people, and that's okay.

Enjoyed the show, good job. I do agree with someone above who suggested picking a topic and sticking to it with the guest. I'm not sure "liberal talk radio" should really be just hitting the talking points like the "other guys'".
However, given the quality of the hosts and if you can maintain the quality of guests you had for the kickoff, this really can't help but kick ass.

Thanks for an excellent initial show! I've tuned in most of the day to this new network, and I can't tell you how REFRESHING it is to hear voices on the radio that actually speak to the issues I think are important, discussed in the only sensible way: with an open, "liberal" mind!
As an aside, Janeane, if I could, I'd have your baby! : )

can you please, please, please not get yourselves fined into debt. a couple of times today on randi's show, and now gang-banging and crackers. c'mon, please don't mess this up.
on that note - a technical question. i listen online stream and this afternoon i turned on the radio here in nyc and noticed that there was a delay from my stream. one of randi's listeners uttered a "f*ck" and i could hear it. i must assume it was bleeped on the AM dial. however, what are the FCC's policies governing the internet stream, do the indecency laws apply there if it is a "live" show, also found on the dial? i'm curious - and beyond my uptightieness about this issue - am curious to know how that works technically. if anyone knows, thanks for a response.
otherwise, i love airamerica. where are the donate buttons on the main site? i couldn't find em.
janeane's blond hair and tats are looking great at nyt. girl power.

ahoy from rainy Ithaca.
i saw a link to airamerica in one of my friend's blogs and tuned in just in time to catch the beginning of your show. I'm elated that this network and espeically you two are on the air. I'm in college and not nearly as politically active or informed as I should be, usually because it takes effort (as it should, I know)and because issues and political mumbo jumbo can be extremely confusing. Listening to your show, though makes things a little bit easier to understand, a lot more interesting, and really demonstrated why i need to put in that extra effort and get informed.
thank you so much for your show and your work.

I'm sure you guys will smooth out as time goes on. I wonder if you'll take callers? I'd love to counter some of the absurdites and agree with some of the thoughtful stuff I heard in stream.
Until then, I'll be posting my thoughts on my blog.
Best of luck, I hope you guys don't turn into what you say you hate about the Republicans - rank propagandists who ignore the truth to push your politics.
Nothing will prove it more if you don't allow yourselves to be challenged intellectually.

Air America needs a way for net stream listeners to register their location. That demographic info would help you market the network and decide where to expand to.
Zip codes would work, I think.

Welcome to the airwaves. Turn your back to the lawyers and just don't swear and your show will do well. You can get away with 50 fold more than they are allowing you.

What a great show. I didn't know what to expect, but you have surpassed my wildest dreams.
I sent a message to Ben and Jerry's website to let them know I will forever purchase their product due to their participation. I would love to see an advertiser list so I could contact them all. A reverse boycott.
The fact that JG is such a babe only makes the whole experience more pleasureable. Ear candy. (Dead air after the show needs a little work.)

Yay, you! When is it coming to Des Moines? I sent email to the program director of the local clear channel franchise, and of course never heard back. But now I hear clear channel might be trying out some air america programming in portland. great. money, after all, is god.

Great first show guys. Janeane, I'm impressed, you're a natural. To think it was only a few years ago (okay, more than a few) that Sandra Bernhard was introducing you as Jane Anne. You've been one of my favourite stand-ups of the past decade and I'm proud of all you are doing for this country. Looking forward to making your show part of my day. Good luck. I'll spread the word.

I’m glad we’re finally erasing the sigma around the word “liberal”, an effective tactic by the right. For a while, I felt like I shouldn’t admit I was liberal. Then I had that realization like the Sheriff of Nottingham when Bugs Bunny duped him into building a house on the King’s land. Dick Chaney hypnotized me!
With shows like yours I feel invigorated and motivated. I feel like, not only am I not alone in my frustration of the right wing agenda, and I don’t have this fringe point of view. In fact, most of America feels the way I do.
I think you guys have so much smart, funny, powerful and substantial material and guests that I do encourage you to stay away from the “Rush sensationalism.”
I think “New Metal Conservativism” is a fantastic term. Great guests tonight!
I’ll tell everyone I know about the show. Keep it up!

Just keep it up. Remember, if radio were easy, everyone would do it. J., you've put your career where your heart is, we will beat these bastards.

Nice first show - I caught the last hour.
JG - Thanks for your testimony re: Dean. A lot of us are still smarting over his campaign...and you can bear witness to the hope that was the campaign.
Other thought: This might take a while to get going, but is there some way you folks can integrate your nighttime radio show into the real world of politics a little more?
My thinking - and I'm still developing the thought - is that you use one Friday night a month to report on/from "Majority Report House Parties" from all over the nation. Each house party could be a fundraiser for a different local candidate - or perhaps for Sen. Kerry.
You could take calls live from the different parties, talk to the local candidates who are running for office, and encourage local activism. Real grassroots stuff, like Dean/WDFA was encouraging. And, by building community, you're making the show a "must-listen" to a core constituency. You also have plenty to talk about in the days/weeks leading up to the big nights. Kinda a "Radio Meetup."
That's my $.02. Good stuff. Loved Chappelle, loved Cohen. Good luck to you on your venture.

Thanks for bringing the "L" word (and I don't mean those hot lesbians on TV) back to America's airwaves! One suggestion in an otherwise great show--Janeane, you mentioned the so-called death tax several times tonight. Bring in specific numbers to back up how much the Republicans twisted the whole concept! You mentioned generalities (the richest 10-20% of the population or something), but the specifics are even worse. This "death tax" is actually an INHERITANCE tax on inheritances in the MILLIONS of dollars, and the Republicans wanted to raise it to $100 million... No small farmers or small business-owners are inheriting this kind of money.
Maybe the Halliburton CEO's kids.

i think where janine finally got me for the last time is when she tried to take blame for umm at the end. umm was sam's fault, but janine tried to take blame for it. it reminded me direclty of much more than what they were talking about the "blame america first crowd." and that is i am pretty sure that 9/11 encouraged a lot of people to become informed, like me. and as we become informed, it becomes so disgusting that people actually voted for what is not in their best interests. i think the old idea that conservatism was about small government and privacy issues was very honarable. these people are supposed to be conservatives and they want MORE government involvement. i am starting to think the only solution is to borrow another trillion, buy a country for them somewhere and then they can set up their little christian taliban experiment and we can live in peace until we have to bomb them in ten years. that's a deficit that wouldn't bother me, because it's actually a return on an investment.

I've been listening to Air America all day (to the point of neglecting to study for a midterm I've got in twelve hours) and I've done several spit-takes as folks on the radio have said the exact same things I've been thinking quietly to myself every day for years. From "liberal" somewhere becoming a bad word to being unable to sit through an entire W. speech just because of the icky feeling of incompetence emanating from the television.
It's scary how truly awesome it can be to instantly go from feeling like a thought-process minority to hearing people echoing your private thoughts on national radio.
Ya'll kick much ass. Just remember to keep it on the up-and-up.. a dirty shot here and there is cool, but in credibility lies longevity.

Great Hosts, Great Guests, and good dialouges on important issues that need to be discussed within the framework of progressive ideals. With a little more than 7 months untill the election I am hopefull that you will be able to to keep the show's interesting and balanced and not an endless rant. (Eventhough we all feel like we could rant about Bush forever) I think its also critical that whatever topics are discussed that the hosts have serious knowledge on the topics. Also if the shows format will be filled with guests more pointed interviews will be helpful in keeping the segments coheasive. Having said all this I am a huge fan of Janeane and a fan of smart intellectual and progressive views. Good luck and keep up the good work!

AWESOME.
One gripe - that you didn't defend Kerry's vote on Iraq when Chapelle brought it up. I think he has a very good position on why he did that - that it would give strength to the inspections (it did) and thus it would prevent war (it didn't, but only because of Bush's dishonesty - Josh Marshall has a great post on this: http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2004_03_07.php#002681).
That, and what he told Eric Alterman, among others, at some kind of informal meeting some time: If you really think we'd be at war with Iraq if I were President, then don't vote for me.
-- an armchair quarterback.
Anyway, great work.

Seriously, congratulations, you made it through the first show. Wish I could have listened to the whole thing, but I was off praying for whirled peas. Apparently the Religious Right is under the impression that they're the only "good" religious people in America?!?... ::whispers:: but that's another thing they're wrong about.
I'm another liberal that would like to take the "L" word back for our own use. Funny how the people that wave the flags and try to sell us "Freedom Fries" somehow conveniently forget that "liberal" is related to "liberty," and means someone interested in freedom for all.
And on a technical note? Moveable Type and RSS and Atom and everything? Cool!1!

Wouldya consider discussing this tomorrow night? Please:
Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and H.R. 163 forward this year, entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age18--26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active bills currently sit in the Committee on Armed Services.
". . .and for other purposes." Whoa.
Ernest Hollings brought those Bills forward.
And if you get a chance you might be interested in this:
http://www.counterbias.com/news001.html
in which bush2 is photographed rubbing the bald head of an African-American man, an old racist joke that I recall my drunken uncles, white like me, sharing over Stag beer: Rub a nappy head for luck.
and note the broken yahoo link. I found the cached page, but the photo has been removed, I guess, because it never came up.
Why is the country I live in referred to now as The Homeland? Makes me feel pretty Aryan. Will we have an Awayland in the second (third?)wave of bush? Isn't this, at least, imperialist language? At its worst, it sure recalls post-Weimar Germany.
And how about the move to reclassify non-profit organizations into PACs if they criticize any federal official or policy during an "election cycle"? How long can an election cycle last?
But here is my burning topic for discussion: Has anyone figured out how bush got that shiner and facial abrasions during the recount in 2000? I know about the pretzel incident, but I remain intrigued with that first boo-boo.
I end as I began: Thank You All, Air America.

Talking points about gay marriage:
You know, if people want to ruin their lives, then let them.
All marriage is, to the state, is a contract to say what is yours is mine and what is mine is yours. when i decide that doesn't work for me, we will divide it in half.
that's it.
why should the state keep two women or two men from entering into such a stupid business contract?

Yes, awesome, the loaded premise of "partial-birth abortion" and "death tax"! Just as odious -- "tax relief." That means "relieving the uppermost tax bracket of having to pay anything like its freakin' fair share."

the blame america first thing.
it was acknowledged by madeline albright in the 90's that america played a part in the overthrow of the democratically government of iran in 1953. the first time we ever otherthrew a government covertly. we reinstall the shah of iran, a brutal dicator, which leads to a revolution, an islamic revolution, and they are angry at us for putting them under 25 years of brutal dictatorship. so they take some hostages which no one should ever do because freedom is go where you please. We retaliate by supporting saddam hussein's war against iran but then the twit invades a country that might provide us with the money making commodity, oil. so to make saddam an evil guy (and he was because he did things that are inhumane), we embark on this crusade to expel him.
and now, here we are, we don't recognize how overthrowing democratic governments in favor of dictatorships is a mistake, we don't recognize that our previous actions played a role in the worst attack on our country ever.
you know, in my personal life, i would rather take blame for when i make a mistake (and even when i haven't sometimes) than otherwise. because then, at least, i might have a bit of control over my future actions.
how these people can run as the party of responsibilty promoting the age of accountability and get away with it is mind-boggling

I share your anger over the "partial-birth abortion" linguistic lie. Super guests, too. Sam, you'll get over the "umms," no big deal. I'll do everything that I can to get people to listen; don't want your show or AA to end up being Brilliant But Cancelled (nod to Sam). To agp: the FCC has no authority to regulate the Internet for indecency. Congress tried to pass the Communications Decency Act but it was held to be unconstitutional. This means that anyone is free to use George Carlin's seven dirty words on Internet radio or on blogs.

Yay!! Great first show! I can't wait to hear you on a real station here in San Francisco.
I'm hoping we'll hear more red meat: funny, merciless pounding of the stupidity and craven dishonesty of the Bush administration and their minions. Blogs are such a great source of humor--I hope you'll steal from them often.
I'd love to hear a "stupid right wing quotes" of the hour, followed by well-prepared scathing comments.
All right, get out there champs! Be relentless! Don't give an inch! Yeeeaaarrrrgghh!!!!

That was a great show guys! I wanted to put a little thought in your minds and you've obliged by presenting this blog. My little thought is this:
The extreme Right is so deluded that it thinks that it represents the center of political life, and therefore anyone to the left of them is truely a "Leftist". Anyone with a little education can see that there are virtually no true Leftists participating in American politics and that what the Right calls "Left" is actually the center, relatively.
Liberals aren't actually Leftists, they occupy the broad center and that's an important delineation to make. The Oxford English Dictionary (the standard of our language) describes a political liberal in this way: "Free from bigotry or unreasonable prejudice in favor of traditional opinions or established institutions; open to the reception of new ideas or proposals of reform".
The extreme Left is as rigid and dogmatic as the extreme Right. The open minds of civilization are in the center. They (we) are liberals and we should define ourselves that way, including ourselves with the majority of our countrymen. The center is only left to the extreme Right!

random thoughts:
Dennis Miller needs to be flayed on the show.
Loved how J-Falo brought up the culture war - how the GOP wages a culture war to divert attention from the fact that their economic policies are inimical to the interests of the middle and lower class. This is how they convince white southerners to vote GOP, against their economic interest. If they told people, 'we're going to ensure you are just happy to have a job no matter if it pays Wal-Mart wages, you will pay more and more for health care, and we'll shift the tax burden off the backs of the wealthy and onto yours,' no one would ever vote for them but the wealthy.
Let's have more discussion of this topic, please.
Did I mention Dennis Miller needs some abuse?
Future guest suggestions: Krugman. David Kay Johnston. Michael Lind. David Brock. Ralph Nader, hahahaha. Nedra Pickler (just for grins and giggles, to see what she'd say to the invite). Bill Clinton.
Peace, out.

Congratulations on a great first show. Thank you for taking the bold first step in giving voice to a large number of worried Americans. To listen to discussion this smart and funny (on TALK RADIO of all places) is a true pleasure.
Ms. Garofalo made one point tonight that was particularly insightful. I thought she put it so well when she asked (i'm paraphrasing) "How can you be a pro-life, pro-war, pro-death penalty Christian? Its illogical."
As a Christian and a liberal, I couldn't agree more. Even a cursory examination of the Gospels would tell you that the center of the Christian world view is love, compassion, forgiveness, and charity. Helping your brothers and sisters in need- this is the heart of Christianity. Sadly, the current administration seems uninterested in any of these virtues. I am sick and tired of having my faith associated with the intolerant, dishonest right-wing political agenda. I hope "Majority Report" and other Air America programming will embrace religious liberals and help debunk the popular view of all Christian Americans as hypocritical, anti-intellectual zealots.
Anyway, sorry about the digression. I really just wanted to congratulate everyone at "Majority Report" for such a great debut. Count me as a regular listener. Good luck.
p.s. I've been a fan of Ms. Garafalo since her days on "The Ben Stiller Show" Judging from her performance tonight, I think she may have found the perfect medium for her exceptional talents, (though we all miss being able to SEE her.)

First of all THANKS SO MUCH! It's great to have a real alternative to the mainstream media out there.
Having said that, I can't stress enough how important it is to really elevate the discussion to the level of facts and real intellectualism in the liberal tradition. Stooping to the level of Rush Limbaugh will only doom Air America radio to be ridiculed by all the pundits.
Just my $0.02

Excellent first show. I'm so proud of both of you -- keep up the great work! It was incredibly rewarding and validating to hear Janeane drawing a connection between short-term fear-based decision making in politics and the same fear-based short-term decision making in sitcoms/entertainment industry. I've been saying the same thing to my friends for the last couple of years, and everyone has just said "sitcoms? come on!"

Loved the show, been waiting for this network for years now.
A few suggestions, make an outline before each show and try to stick with it. Have a general topic for each show. But be flexible if something starts cooking, then work it for all it's worth.
You have to watch out that things don't get too down. Moods are amplified over the air. It's easy to end up being too serious, that ends up sounding like a drone on our end.
You need to try to balance your guests/co-hosts. If someone is going to be the serious one, someone else needs to be the up/funny one.
Everyone can be smart, but everyone can't be down. The country is depressing enough, people need to hear some hope right now.
Your network and your show could do a real public service if you'd plug local liberal activist groups and activities. Right now we need to get orgainized, the other side is very organized and they use the media. We need to do the same. It would be great if some of the AAR personalities appeared at rallys and meetings.
There was some weirdness on the webcast feed. After the station went off the air we heard practice tapings of the news, with comments and engineer talking. Kinda unprofessional, but forgivable on your first day.
For your first night you did great. You'll do better every day. In a month you'll be pros.
Everyone is starving for what you have to offer. You can't miss, and you have no competition.
Remember, you are setting the standard for liberal talk radio, you're pioneers. Be proud of yourselves, your fighting the good fight and we'll back you 100%
Thanks!

You guys have to pound the Letterman censorship angle, it dove tails into the other censorship acts - Bill Maher, Stern, then connect it to how the "shape" the news coverage.

That this administration has made a moderate like me (socially liberal/fiscally conservative) declare myself a proud liberal shows just how far off the rails they've taken this country. I can't tell you what it means to me to have Air America speaking out. I feel like I can breathe again.

It's a wonderful network, but to paraphrase what Janeane G. and Dave Chappele said, "why are there no Latinos on Air America? Because they're not being hired! Not because there's NONE out there."
What's up with that? Air America is as diverse as the typical white liberal organization. A room full of white libs and 2 African-Americans.
Please comment!

I've been waiting for a long time for validation of my beliefs. To hear the hosts and guests of Majority Report say the same things I've been saying for the last 15 years is so refreshing.
Thank you so much for representing my views. To hear thinking, reasoning individuals who are not ashamed to be intelligent and compassionate and are proud to be liberal is a gift.
I'm so happy that Bill Maher was one of the first guests. Before my mom passed away, Politically Incorrect was one of her favorite shows. She used to tape all the episodes. When we went through her stuff we found all kinds of scraps of paper in a notebook that she had written quotes from the show on. My brothers and I laughed during that difficult time over all those quotes. Now every time I hear about Bill Maher, I think of my mom. Thanks, Bill.
And thanks, AirAmerica and Majority Report. You guys rock. Keep up the good work.

I listened to just about all of your first day, and the new Air America network ROCKS! On "The Majority Report", co-hosts Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder have theirs were fun, funny, and informative. I also want to comment on the other shows that were on the first day. The other I also listened to The Randi Rhodes Show and The Majority Report and they were equally good.
One comment though. The first day jitters were apparently there. Late at night, I guess around midnight EST, Your station was apparently on the air when you didn't realize it. Your news guy had just given a news spot, and your network apparently thought you were at commercial for a minute before giving a second news spot. Well, we could still hear you guys talking, and one of your tech guys was apparently looking at the audio hookup and said something like "They changed a lot of s*** around" and we who were listening heard it. Might want to tell your staff to avoid certain words when in the booth, since you never know when you might accidentally be on the air, and I don't want FCC Chariman Junior Powell fining you guys before you get off the ground. :)

Agreed-GREAT SHOW!
Please don't engage in petty Nader bashing like Randi Rhodes did. I was glad to see that you didn't. It's good to see a program hosted by two folks who have been out there ahead of the party in going after Bush's agenda rather than blind party loyalists..
Mr Nader may have tactics that some on the left may disagree with, but he's not the enemy. Such criticism would be better suited for the Bush administration and so-called Democrats who are too spineless to stand up to him.

Thanks for the cannon fodder, Todd
Janeane and fellow host, great show and thank you and other hosts, especially Al Franken, for doing this. I've waited 10 years for this(ever wonder why?) when I used to listen to Limbaugh and think, 'why isn't there a liberal radio combating this nut?'(because Liberals can't compete on idealogy and can't sell it to the masses so you try to hi-jack the courts to push your socialist agenda) I know Air America is going to be successful(about the same degree the previous ones were) and I look forward to seeing true cable news stations broadcasting in the future 24x7. I have and will continue to advertise Air America here in Detroit. Our country is on a brink of no return and I know you all are doing this in a very personal way, so that in itself is the reason why you're going to succeed beyond all of our wildest dreams (lotsa good drugs in Detroit). Also, you are on the side of all the natural principles, exposing the lies of these manufactured man-made principles(yeah...right), and that will make you succeed. Al’s show came in badly over the Internet.(the massive web server hits no doubt) I got about 10 minutes of over an hour(woulda been enough for me). I constantly tried reconnecting up to that time. The mid-afternoon and your show are coming in great; no disconnects. I have a cable connection so you may want to enhance your hardware on your end to help out Al’s show. I loved the small bit I could hear of Anne Coulter(I lover her too). I thought that was great. Al is extremely funny(not when he was on SNL but is a riot now...tackle anybody recently?). I still remember the show he did in the summer with APR. With you guys on the radio now and if (talk about a big IF..maybe if you guys keep him out of the media)Kerry wins the election, I just might decide to stay in this country(don't let the door hit you on the way out) and not move to London like I was planning.(try France instead...I like the Brits)

I woke up yesterday morning to an email from MoveOn telling me that you guys now exist. So I got online, started listening, and haven't stopped since. When I fell asleep eighteen hours later, the morning show was just kicking in.
I'm addicted, and not because of the star power or because I agree with you guys on everything, but simply because you've done your homework. You're talking about things Dan Rather can't. You're breaking news that broke in the UK a year ago but was never allowed to break locally. You're doing the job that every journalist worth his or her salt should be doing at their corporate outlets, but won't do because, hey, we all gotta keep the lights on.
If I could ask for a handful of things from my wishlist, please get some new Public Service Announcement ads - it's killing me to listen to that dude looking for "Lisa's dad" every five minutes.
Also, let's hear more voices during the current 'down' hours. I'm sure DemocracyNow.org would love their daily 'war and peace report' to piggyback on your network, and it would only help the cause - getting rid of Bush Inc.
I know from first hand experience that Hunter S. Thompson is positively chomping at the bit to get a forum to rail against Dubbya - he was the guy that turned America onto Jimmy Carter back in the day... Get him on the phone!
Again, congrats on what you've started, and may the gods that BushInc doesn't own smile down upon you all.
Much love from Vancouver Canada.

YOU'RE GONNA LOVE THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT:
Found at Starbucks: The Pentagon's Papers
http://www.americanprogress.org/site/pp.asp?c=biJRJ8OVF&b=42125
As most of America slept early last Sunday morning, the Bush administration hustled and bustled to prepare for the Sunday morning talk shows – among others Colin Powell was appearing on "Face the Nation" and Donald Rumsfeld was booked on "Fox News Sunday." Condoleezza Rice was not scheduled to appear until prime time, when she would make a star appearance on CBS' "60 Minutes" – the last in a long line of media appearances that caused 9/11 Commissioner Richard Ben Veniste to quip that "Condi Rice has appeared everywhere but at my local Starbucks."
Well, others in the Bush administration did, apparently, make an appearance at the local Starbucks. And as the Washington Post reports today, one of them – obviously readying himself to prep Defense Secretary Rumsfeld – left his notes on the table. Talking points, hand-written notes on spin tactics that reveal the White House was worried about former Bush adviser Richard Clarke's charges, and a hand-drawn map to the Secretary's house were found by a resident of DuPont Circle, who made them available to the Center for American Progress. The name of said resident is being withheld at his request, as he fears that he may be accused on national television of being "disgruntled."

Bad news, good news:
About forty percent of the vote for Bush in 2000 came from the evangelical right (according to Kevin Phillips).
The Bad news - that many people have wacky beliefs and there is nothing we can do about it.
The Good news - he's already got most of what he can get from that demo.
Like father like son, one term and you're done.....

I went to one of the KC Chiefs games this year, and before the game we went anti-tailgating, which basically means we went to Michael Jackson’s Never Land ranch and sewed everyone’s asshole shut.
The real irony is that Michael would have gotten away with everything had he only been a Catholic Priest.
Now they are debating whether Michael’s children are biologically his own--that he had a friend knock up his wife or something--it may have been someone from the Nation of Islam. What is the debate about? Of course those aren’t his biological children. He doesn’t want to sodomize his own kids. I mean, he’s a pedophile, not a sick-o.
Now, the Nation of Islam has came to Michael’s defense. I wonder if they know about Janet’s little stunt at the Super bowl. The Nation of Islam is like, “well Michael we’ll support you pedophilia, but can you keep your sister covered up when she’s in PUBLIC?”

Great show! I wasn't even going to register to vote. I've learned so much since Air America Radio went live, I'll definitely be registering to vote now. And getting all my friends to listen, and encouraging them to vote.
I added a link to the stream on my ISP's page and my personal blog page. I'm planning on getting XM radio now - so when they fine you off the airwaves I can still listen (don't think they can force you off xm...)
The stream plays great over dial-up. No problems here - some slight volume issues periodially but nothing major. Mainly planning on getting XM to listen in the car - as home and work I can listen over the net.

I just wanted to make a comment on the bill the President signed today giving further rights to unborn fetuses. I have no argument with that, it seems to be resonable......but has anyone ever asked the President just what it is about being born that offends him so much, because it seems he loves the children in the womb.....but once born he seems to lose interest...." viva la resistance! Every talking head on our side of the aisle should carry packs of crackers on every media appearance. Then when the 'radi-cons' start spewing their talking points, all we have to do is toss out a couple of crackers and cackle "Polly want a cracker?" Somehow we have to hold up the Bush-parrots to scorn and ridicule. Humor is as good a starting point as any... Kerry would sweep the floors with GW if in the first debate he would take a long disdainful look at GW and just say "Bullshit George!"

For on air:
I keep hearing the left complaining about Republicans and conservatives -- but they usually mean people like Bush, and those people are neither Republicans nor conservative. Ike was a Republican -- and he'd be spinning is his grave to hear Bush.
The Republicans, and to a large extent the Democrats, have been taken over by the corporate powers who mix big business and government -- I call them fascists. Many real Republicans and conservatives already understand this, and it's time this difference was made very clear to everyone.

10:37 --Sean Fensel, Rainbow's End Talk Radio again. Guess not, you guys must be really busy. Congrats by the way. I've been waiting for this network to happen for the better part of the last decade and a half. I would love to talk to Al and J.G. and/or principals further. Will keep trying to call, but have been using the daytime call in number. Could you please say on air if it's different? Wanted to say hi to Barney Frank--we've worked together on a number of issues here in New England, legislative and media. My website is above. My best! Again, I'd be honored to bring my staff to Air America and be your evening closer 9 or 10 to 1 or 2 a.m., which have been my normal hours of operation, live, 5 days a week.

I woke up with an idea - how about a daily segment on friends of GW Bush - there are several tarnished stories in this family history. Ken Lay, many Saudis - family indiscretion - like fish in a pond - everything they do is close to honest. I am glad you respect Democracy Now - the Pacifica archives are amazing. Historic events reported by news people at the time make an impact on the radio broadcast.

I love this show and this radio station. Hey, have you seen this article about CNN, Letterman and the White House? A kid fell asleep listening to Bush (suprise). Letterman used the video, and then CNN used the Letterman clip-- but cautioned its viewers that the White House said the footage was edited by Letterman, which is why no one around the kid reacted.
It turns out the White House didn't comment on it after all, and the video clip was real. CNN just made up the part about the White House comment and the clip being fake.
So what the hell is up with CNN? Were they trying to spin the story to make sure they weren't perceived as showing disrespect to Bush? After all, no one would really fall asleep listening to Bush. Is CNN so scared of being called out for being anti-Bush that they would fabricate a White House response? This is very disturbing.
CNN wanted to be funny by showing Letterman- but not too funny. I guess Humor is just too damn dangerous in a world where terrorists lurk.
By the way, the View and Good Morning America are nowing running a five second delay. More evidence that news is being censored, edited and fabricated by the government.
CNN red-faced over Letterman error
- - - - - - - - - - - -
by Frazier Moore
April 2, 2004 | NEW YORK (AP) -- What began on David Letterman's ``Late Show'' as a comedy bit needling President Bush turned into a comedy of errors when CNN incorrectly reported that the White House had cried foul.
Then Letterman -- apparently not getting CNN's message that it had made the mistake until he was well into his Tuesday broadcast -- only heightened the confusion.
The whole thing started during a collection of video clips Letterman showed Monday under the label "George W. Bush Invigorates America's Youth.''
One showed Bush at a March rally in Orlando, Fla., standing at a lectern with several listeners behind him -- among them, a boy in his early teens who could barely stay awake. While Bush spoke, the young man yawned, twisted his head, checked his watch and generally seemed dead on his feet.
Tuesday morning, CNN attempted to lighten its news mood by running the segment, credited to CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman,'' on its ``CNN Live Today.''
But then CNN host Daryn Kagan added: "We're being told by the White House that the kid, as funny as he was, was edited into that video, which would explain why the people around him weren't really reacting.''
Later, during CNN's "Live From ...,'' anchor Kyra Phillips reran the tape but cautioned viewers: "We're told that the kid was there at that event, but not necessarily standing behind the president.''
The truth was: The White House never complained, and the footage was real.
So is the lad: 13-year-old Tyler Crotty, son of Orange County Chairman and Bush supporter Rich Crotty. As the elder Crotty explained Thursday, Tyler was so excited about the prospect of seeing the president he couldn't sleep the night before.
While awaiting Bush's appearance, a lucky Tyler got a prime seat when a guest invited to sit on the dais didn't show. But the lengthy event took its toll on the tired youngster _ and then on Letterman.
"This has gotten to be so silly and so complicated, and I don't want to go through it again because every day there's a new development, and we think now it's over,'' Letterman said on Thursday's show. "We hope to God it's over.''
Not quite. Letterman announced that Tyler will be his guest Friday.
On his Tuesday telecast, Letterman aired Kagan's and Phillips' skeptical remarks and ranted: ``An out-and-out, 100 percent absolute lie. The kid absolutely was there and he absolutely was doing everything we pictured via the videotape. ...
"So when you cast your vote in November,'' he urged, ``just remember that the White House was trying to make ME look like a DOPE.''
By then, CNN had owned up to its mistake, and placed a call to Letterman's New York headquarters before the 5:30 p.m. taping began. But the tape was already rolling before Letterman got the word.
"According to this,'' he said during the show, referring to an index card in his grasp, ``CNN has just phoned and ... the anchorwoman misspoke. They never got a comment from the White House. It was a CNN mistake.''
So then he wailed: "Now I've called the White House liars, and you know what that means _ they're going to start looking into my taxes!''
Though CNN spokeswoman Christa Robinson noted that ``we frequently air late-night comedy show clips,'' on Thursday she confirmed the "misunderstanding among our staff'' surrounding the yawning-boy video.
Meanwhile, Kagan made an on-air show of contrition.
"Dave, we apologize for the error,'' she said, offering to come on his show for a Stupid Human Trick

J & S:
Great show on Day Three (Portland, OR, KPOJ). 'Heard you tell Gov. Dean that you two voted for Nader last time. It is FAR more persuasive to hear you two say "not this time" than to hear a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat tell us not to vote for Nader this time. So keep doing this!
Here's something that worked really well with Green voters in Oregon last time, but I can't remember which political group dreamed it up. Perhaps someone else will chime in with more details. Anyway, I was a registered Green in California who moved back to Oregon where there is no official Green Party but where Nader was on the ballot. That's just background to establish someone conflicted about whom to vote for as the date drew near.
Oregon was looking to be a close race (Gore barely won this state) when someone came up with a plan called somethng like "Be a Nader Trader" (yes, the pun would be "Nader Traitor," but never mind). What this meant was that an Oregonian leaning Green would pledge to "trade" votes with someone in a state like Wyoming (Cheney's state) where the Gore ticket didn't have a prayer anyway. The Oregonian pledged to vote for the Democratic candidates if a Wyoming voter would agree to vote for Nader. I can't remember the rest of the logistics, but even though it was a last minute plan here, and pundits felt it made the difference in sending Oregon's electoral votes to the Democratic candidates.
I'm thinking that if something like the "Nader Trader" plan were put into motion much earlier and got national notice and a push over the radio, it might defuse the Nader threat to a crucial degree. Under this plan, Nader voters can have it both ways. First, they can have the satisfaction of knowing their votes will show up in the popular vote tally (though cast in a different state). Second, they have the satisfaction of knowing they will not help give over their battlefront state to the Bush camp in a tight election. Just think if the "Nader Trader" plan had been widespread in Florida in 2000!
Again, I can't remember the fine points of the plan, but I saw it work in my state last time. Given your voting records, I can think of no more convincing public figures to lead such a charge!

Great Show!!!
I love the high-profile guests you've been having. However, it would be great to see fussion between this and other liberal/radical/freespeech radio. My first thought upon seeing the show lineup was "Where is Democracy Now?"
Great guests to have on your show (definatly not on Randi Rhodes):
Amy Goodman
Noam Chomsky
Howard Zinn
Greg Graffin
Also, introducing listeners to Democracy Now!, Free Speech TV (DISH Network), and Freedom TV (Winamp tv channel), and the Independent Media Centers would be great. I think it would serve to get people more involved; some might not realize the efforts that have been going on for a while; let's all get together!
Also, try to get Winamp and XMMS radio streams!

A "FAIR, FRANK AND FRUITFUL" RESPONSE TO THE PSEUDO-CON NETWORKS
Air America is the epitomy of what America is about and talk radio has to be about competition and the availability of viewpoints for those who believe in liberating the body, minds, souls and hearts of The People.
We hear talk about the media being "the liberal" media but after listening to talk-radio for the past twenty years, all one hears is the type of media that existed in Germany and Rwanda before the events that occurred due to the evil use of scapegoating, hatred and misinformation against others.
For the past fifteen years, talk radio has not been "liberal" nor has the "liberal" news been "liberal." What we have had is the major news media (ABC...ect..) being biased to be "neutral" and the "conservative" media being biased to spew conservative propaganda. There has been no "leftwing" or "liberal" domination of any media where propaganda is constantly spewed out over the thousands of channels twentyfour hours a day. There has been no "liberal" media where certain unpopular groups of Americans have been treated in the very same manner that certain groups were treated in Germany or in Rwanda, which led to brutality and genocide being used against them.
The fact is the "false conservative" media pretending to be so patriotic have done nothing but contribute to the division of America and are using the same propaganda techniques of the Axis Powers of World War II in their effort to divide and control the rest of America.
Well let's how AIR AMERICA serves as a conduit to returning sanity and fairness to the media and to talk radio.

Air America thing is wonderful. I have been addicted since day one and I especially enjoy listening to the Majority Report. I feel as though the my generation has finally found a voice. I listen from Chicago where I am supposed to be able to listen on AM950 but I can only pick it up in the car so I have been listening on the internet at work and at home.
I was at a Peace march/rally here in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, (which by the way had a larger police presence than anything I have ever seen, creating a very intimidating atmosphere). Anyway, I met some people who are part of a Socialist organization who were talking to me about the idea of "lesser evilism" meaning that my intent to vote for a Democrat (even though I honestly am not feeling Kerry either)is voting for the lesser evil and that to make any real change we must vote for people who are not affiliated with either party. While their argument makes sense to me I feel stuck with the need to vote for whatever Democrat, just to get Bush out of the White House.
Now that I have been listening to Air America so often it feels as though the Bush's pile of lies is exploding and exposing the administration for what it is. Is it just that I have been paying less attention to the mainstream? As I was riding home on the Red Line (the "el") today there was some graffiti which simply read "BUSH JUST SUCKS" which I have just decided says it all and is my new life motto.
Lastly, thank you for the interesting insight and guests. Tim Robbins Rocks! and Carmine was a nice reminder that you can disagree with someone and still respect them. I'd like to see if he comes to change his mind about Bush before the election.

Why shouldn't I spend it on promoting poor judgement? It IS surprising, though, how many of you folks actually BELIEVE that I know what I'm talking about.
